In 1962 , Houghton Miff lin released the SUB V ER SI V E book called Silent Spring .

This book was a poetic and persuasive text that alarmed and excited the read-
ing public when it was first published.

One–third of this book had initially been released in a three–part series in The
New Yorker ( June 16 t h , June 23 r d , and June 30 t h , 1962 ).

In September 1962 , Houghton–Miff lin released the F U L L V ER SI O N of this book.

As of 2007 , Silent Spring was in its twenty–eighth printing .

Over ten million copies have been sold worldwide.

More than thirty thousand copies are reportedly sold each year.

Silent Spring was so highly anticipated that the Book–of –the–Month Club sold
one–hundred and f if ty thousand copies , with f orty thousand advance sales.

W illiam O. Douglas , naturalist and former U.S. justice, wrote the introduction.

Book–of –the–Month Club was the mail–order bookstore that offered its mem-
bers a new book each month.

M ONSANTO I NDU STR IES

Silent Spring caused a great controversy when it was released.

Chemical companies and associated organizations responded to Carson ’s book

with several of their own interviews, brochures, and articles, promoting and de-
fending the use of pest control products.

Most notably, in 1962 , Monsanto Industries produced a brochure which con-

tained a P AR O DY of Silent Spring , with the imagery of what it would be like if
insect populations were not controlled.

The parody was called « The Desolate Year » , and it was a story of an insect
nightmare that was designed to capitalize on people’s fear of insects ( i.e. ento-
mophobia ).
Here is an excerpt from « The Desolate Year » ―

<< Does the world really need chemica l pesticides ? Are these com-
pounds (used to control insects, rodents, weeds, parasites, and plan t
diseases) better left alone ? Is the public being sold a monstrous
« bill of goods » ? The answers to those questions could be learned
with final ity by seeing what would happen if pesticides were not
available. Imagine, then, that by some incomprehensible turn of cir-
cumstances, the United States were to go through a single year com-
pletely without pesticides. It is under that license that we take a
hard look at that desolate year, exami ni ng in some detail i ts devasta-
tions. >>

The daily newspaper that is published in New York City ( obviously ), and dis-
tributed internationally. Silent Spring remained over thirty weeks on its list as
a « Non–Fiction Best–Seller » starting on October 28 t h , 1962 .

A chemist at Rutgers University , and biochemist/assistant–director of the Agri-

cultural Research Division at American Cyanamid , Robert W hite–Stevens was
spokesman for the chemical industry in the 1960s , and provided its unsurpris-
ing reaction to Silent Spring .

tial election campaign, affectionately referred to as « Mister Goral Warming » ,

public. Silent Spring scored s ixteenth on the list of « 25 Greatest Science
Books of All Time » .

« Human Event » is a weekly conservative magazine. Silent Spring received

« Honourable Mention » on its entertaining list of the « Ten Most Harmf ul
Books of the 19th and 20th Centuries » .
It is amusing to note that this list included books written by Karl Marx , Adolf
Hitler , and Chair man Mao .

Carson would have felt right at home.

Since her death, Carson has been honoured in many ways.

These are all great tributes for someone who was so T ER R I B L Y WR O N G . Many
people firmly believe that her name should be removed from all public property.

There should be NO government–sponsored honours for Carson .

In fact, her estate should be held liable for the harm she has caused with obvi-
ous depraved indifference.

A post office was named after Carson in her hometown of Springdale, Pennsyl-
vania on April 23 r d , 2007 .

The year 2007 was the centenary of Miss Rachel Carson ’s birth.

To commemorate the Carson birth centenary, Democratic Senator Benjamin L.

Cardin of Ma ryland had intended to submit to the U.S. Senate a resolution to
celebrate her « legacy of scientific rigor coupled with poetic sensibility ».

The resolution was thankfully blocked by Republican Senator Tom Coburn of

Oklahoma , a long–time opponent of Carson .

Coburn claimed that ―

most effective insecti cide on the planet ― have finally been jetti-
soned. >>

So much for the celebrations.

Maybe not.

Fif ty–three U.S. Republican representatives voted against a legislative bill nam-
ing a post office after Ca rson in her hometown of Springdale , Pennsylvania .
The bill still passed 334–53 on April 23 r d , 2007 .

The « Rachel Carson Prize » was established in Nor way in 1991 to commemo-
rate the achievements of Carson and to award efforts in her spirit. The prize is
awarded to a W OM AN ( and not a man ) who has distinguished herself in out-

In the United States , Carson was posthumously awarded the « Presidential

Medal of Freedom » in 1980 , the country’s highest civilian honour.

Only Jimmy Carter , the biggest disappointment as U.S. President in recent

times, could have thought of doing this !

In W ashington, D.C. , the Environmental Protection Agency ( E.P.A. ) has a con-

ference room named « The Rachel Carson Room » .

Sigh ! So much for the E.P.A. being an impartial government agency.

The U.S. « Smithsonian Institution » commemorated Carson ’s work against

DDT . The « National Portrait Gallery » of the Smithsonian has displayed a
bronze bust of Carson that was created by the British–born sculptor Una Han-
bury in 1965 .
