Body weight assessment
30)
Describe your assessment of the measurements for a man age 45 years
in the table at the left. A waist to hip ratio for men is considered a health risk if
it is above 0.9. (1 point)
SHOW ANY CALCUATIONS YOU MAKE (1 point)
BMI calculation: 180 lbs/70 in/70 in x 703 = 25.8 kg/m2
Waist to hip ratio: 38 in/35 in = 1.08
This mans BMI is categorized as overweight, but this could be due to excess muscle mass. This makes the waist to hip
ratio (WHR) critical to assessing his health risk related to body weight. His WHR exceeds the cutoff of 0.9, which is
associated with more risk of disease than if he was below 0.9.
31) Describe any other information would you need to know to fully assess if this is a healthy body weight for
this man? (1 point)
To fully assess body weight for this individual it would also be helpful to know if he has any comorbidities
such as hypertension, insulin resistance, diabetes, dyslipidemia, or cardiovascular disease. Percent body fat
would be another measure used in assessing body weight.
NOTE: Diet analysis is not part of assessing body weight. Estimating intake may be helpful in making
recommendations, but does not provide information about the reading on a scale.

Implications: This adolescents decline in growth may be due to malnutrition. The decline in stature for age has
occurred after the decline in weight for age.
33) weight-for-age plot (2 points) Dont just write a description of the graph, tell me what it means
Interpretation: This adolescent begins his body weight growth pattern in the 75th percentile and continues
consistently in this percentile until the age of 12.5 years. At this time his percentile growth pattern begins to
decline and his has two years where his weight nearly plateaued.
Implications: This indicates the possibility of malnutrition, as he should be consistently gaining weight during
these years of development.

USE INK IN YOUR BLUE BOOK TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS

NOTE: if an adolescent increases physical activity it should not result in weight loss. They would be
expected to increase calorie intake to meet the demand for physical activity without impacting growth.
NOTE: Weight loss is when body weight decreases. This is not the same as having the same body weight at
2 consecutive measurements. Failing to continue to gain weight, which should be occurring for growth, is
NOT the same as losing weight.
34) BMI-for-age plot (2 points) Dont just write a description of the graph, tell me what it means
His BMI for age percentile has declined over time, but has remained within the healthy range above the 5th
percentile and the 85th percentile. Due to the decline in his stature his BMI percentile did not continue to
decline in his 13th year.
