24

Product Description

Mobile network call traces are reported measurements of the connection between the mobile device
and the network, collected at a specific logical point (RNCs for WCDMA and eNodeBs for LTE) in the
network. They contain call events and the associated layer 3 signaling, which is used to control
mobile connectivity. As such, it contains very valuable information such as:

Signalling information
Mobile measurements
User and phone identification

Determining areas of high traffic demand is a key requirement for network planning and
optimization. This is even more important when deploying small cells, where having the right
locations is critical in order to optimally increase network capacity. Optimal locations for small cells
are areas with high traffic demand and low offered (from the existing macro cells) capacity.
Leveraging/geolocating call trace data can help with the identification of high traffic areas. The
Geolocation engine in Mentum Planet leverages multiple filters/algorithms, in order to ensure
accurate geolocation. Along with other features, the Geolocation Engine in Mentum Planet comes
with an RF fingerprinting methodology, whereby the call trace signal strength measurements are
correlated/compared with propagation calculations generated with Mentum Planet propagation
models.

Mentum Fusion Feature Matrix

Wireless data demand is growing rapidly, creating pressure for wireless operators to deploy larger
and more complex networks. Managing these networks efficiently is a vital differentiator for
operators.
Mentum Fusions two components, server and web, streamline the connections between internal
and external stakeholders by making it easier to produce, integrate, access, analyze and modify
the information derived from air-interface simulations, measurements and the related network
configuration. In essence, this makes Mentum Fusion your unified hub for efficient management of
your most valuable asset: your wireless reach.

Product Description

Multi-User Collaboration and Data Integration

The Mentum Fusion Server incorporates a data management system to facilitate multi-user project
collaboration and provides a centralized database for Mentum Planet projects, allowing users to
share key data in a controlled fashion. The solution is extremely flexible and fully supports thinclient architecture deployments of Mentum Planet based on Citrix as well as standard
client/server architecture. It has been successfully deployed to support more than 500 concurrent
users. The integration of external data sources is done with a flexible Extract-Transform-Load (ETL)
engine. It brings data together from several sources into a single view whereby selected data can
be merged and integrated in the Mentum Fusion Server. The integrated data can be used both in
Mentum Planet and in the Mentum Fusion Web application.

Task Automation and Coverage Map Publishing

Mentum Fusion Server automates the production of coverage and capacity maps, based on data
from the network planning database and from other sources of data such as network
performance measurements. It performs not only the underlying calculations of the air interface
performance but also automates all the steps required to produce customized coverage and
capacity maps.
Mentum Fusion supports scenarios, enabling production of several maps, each of them
corresponding to a specific view of the network. A typical use case could be the analysis of the
network capacity and coverage under different traffic demands. These maps can then be
combined together to produce high-level representations of an operators wireless network
capacity and coverage. Ultimately, Mentum Fusion streamlines production while at the same time
reducing the risk of manual errors typically associated with manual processes.
Coverage maps can be published to Mentum Fusion Web for further analysis, or in relevant
formats for use in other applications. Nationwide coverage maps can easily be rendered on a
regular basis.

Viewing and Analyzing

Mentum Fusion Web is a browser-based application that can be used to access network data,
coverage maps, and statistics produced by the Mentum Fusion server. It can be deployed across
the organization to give all stakeholders immediate access to updated information about the
network. With an intuitive interface, users can view and analyze the prepared information and add
additional business value by combining maps, statistics, charts, and reports into dashboards.
A key aspect of a network is its ability to provide coverage where users are. The mapping
capabilities of Mentum Fusion Web include Bing Maps or street maps.

LTE Technology Module

The introduction of LTE in 3GPP release 8 is a major step forward when it comes to wireless mobile
broadband services. The greater flexibility of LTE provides substantial benefits for wireless
operators but this flexibility needs to be harnessed properly to ensure that rollout plans are sound.
Unlike previous wireless access standards, the air interface of LTE (E-UTRAN) provides greater
channel adaptation techniques, which translate into increased spectral efficiency when the channel

can support it. This means that the network must be designed so that the channel can support
higher data rates where it matters most where the traffic is. This requires a reliable and accurate
network panning and optimization solution that has been proven in the field. In 2008, Mentum
Planet was the first network planning software to introduce LTE support in its product suite. Since
then, Mentum Planet LTE has become the de-facto standard in the industry. It is used for several of
the largest initial LTE deployments and by the majority of network vendors. Now in its eighth major
revision, Mentum Planet LTE is a mature product that offers a level of depth and refinement that is
unmatched in the market. Like all the Mentum Planet technology modules, the LTE network
modeling capabilities are seamlessly integrated within Mentum Planet, making it easy to support a
network with multiple radio access standards and shared physical components such as antennas.

Product Description

Wi-Fi Technology Module

The Wi-Fi family of standards is used to provide broadband data capability over a short range
(typically less than 100 meters). Unlike cellular technologies, Wi-Fi is not designed to offer
contiguous coverage over a large area through handover between cells but rather to offer coverage
over a small area such as a campus or an indoor or outdoor hotspot. Unlike cellular technologies,
Wi-Fi uses unlicensed spectrum, which makes it harder to control interference. Wi-Fi standards
have evolved substantially since the introduction of the original 802.11 standard. Improvements
initially focused on the air interface performance with new releases associated with an ever
increasing connection data rate through the introduction of new features and capabilities (i.e.,
larger bandwidth, MIMO, higher order modulation, OFDM, etc.). There are currently three active
standards from an air-interface perspective: 802.11g, 802.11n and 802.11ac. This improvement of
the air-interface performance has enabled Wi-Fi to become the de-facto global standard for
wireless LANs (private and public). Today, Wi-Fi is used for four primary reasons:
a.
b.
c.
d.

Private (home) wireless LAN

Private (office) wireless LAN
Public wireless LAN (cafes, airports, outdoor, etc.)
Data offloading solution for cellular networks

Mentum Planet Wi-Fi enables the modeling of Wi-Fi networks with a primary focus on outdoor
solutions (although it also supports indoor Wi-Fi). With the introduction of the heterogeneous
network analysis capabilities (part of Mentum Planet core), it is possible to model Wi-Fi as a
solution for offloading traffic from a 3G/4G cellular network. In the context of the spectrum
shortages associated with the rapid growth experienced by wireless carriers, the nonexistent cost
of the Wi-Fi spectrum is of key interest.
With the Mentum Planet Wi-Fi module, an operator, network vendor or radio engineering consulting
firm can:

Analyze the coverage and capacity of Wi-Fi networks

Compare the performance of various Wi-Fi standards and options (band, bandwidth,
release, etc.)
Evaluate the CAPEX requirements associated with the deployment of Wi-Fi (e.g., number of
sites, etc.)
Analyze the use of Wi-Fi to offload data traffic from cellular networks
Optimize Wi-Fi network plans using ACP (optional)

Metro Network Design Package

The design and optimization of wireless networks in urban areas is a complex task. Not only is it
important to ensure that all network information is defined accurately (e.g., antenna placement)
but there is also a need to visualize the network performance in 3D because the environment is
fundamentally made of tall man-made structures. Furthermore, considering that the majority of the
network traffic in urban areas is indoors, there is a need for a solution that enables the
visualization of coverage KPIs indoors. Mentum Planets Metro Network Design package is a brand
new module consisting of the Planet 3D Model for accurate propagation modeling and the Metro
Designer for 3D network visualization. The Metro Network Design package enables engineers to

Universal Model (UM)

The Mentum Universal Model (UM) is an advanced hybrid model that combines several propagation
modeling techniques resulting in unmatched accuracy and calculation performance, regardless of
the environment. With mobile demand migrating from outdoors to indoors and the need to focus on
CINR (rather than only on coverage) in order to improve system capacity of mobile broadband
wireless data services, propagation modeling accuracy is again proving critical in all aspects of the
network lifecycle- from initial planning to ongoing network optimization. The Universal Model
supports high-resolution 3D geodata thus drastically improving accuracy in the areas where it
matters most: the urban centers. Not only is the Universal Model accurate when tuned, it is also

sites when performing network expansions or overlaying new technologies. One key aspect of the
Automatic Site Placement tool is its ability to work on large-scale areas such as nationwide

Automatic Cell Planning (ACP) Module

With the Mentum ACP, you can optimize the configuration of all sites in the network, ensuring that
you utilize the investment in network equipment to the fullest. Deployment of LTE network overlays
and the addition of capacity in 3G networks are typical use cases. The Site Optimization tool finds
the optimal configuration for sites in the network based on radio propagation characteristics,
optimization goals, and constraints.
Today, multi-technology support is expected and the Mentum ACP is designed to deliver that truly. The ACP handles split and shared antennas between technologies. The traffic load is
dynamically shared between technologies during the optimization as a consequence of changes to
the antenna configuration. The optimization goals can be combined across technologies to achieve,
for example, cdma2000 coverage and quality goals as well as LTE capacity goals. The optimization
constraints are defined at the cell level in Mentum Planet. They encompass the parameters to
configure (i.e., output power, antenna model, mechanical as well as electrical azimuths and tilts)
and the associated ranges.
To find the optimal network configuration is the ultimate goal; however, in a network optimization
scenario, all suggested changes are not of interest due to the cost for implementation. The Mentum
ACP therefore produces Optimization Reports where suggested changes and their impact on
network coverage, capacity, and quality can be studied in detail. For additional support for the
selection of the right network configuration, the Mentum Planet ACP also includes an interactive
visualization and analysis tool.
Being natively integrated with Mentum Planet, the Mentum ACP is very easy to use and requires
limited additional settings as existing project parameters are re-used.
With the Mentum Automated Cell Planning tool (ACP), an operator, network vendor or radio
engineering consulting firm can:

Create better network plans that offer improved coverage, capacity, and quality
Automatically plan large network clusters and improve the productivity of the radio planning
department

optimization, allowing the optimization "targets" to vary across the network

Performance, Scalability and Accuracy

The Mentum Planet ACP is fully multi-threaded and runs in a native 64-bit environment (provided
that the OS supports it). Furthermore, the development of this ACP was done with scalability in
mind and, as such, it is able to deal with very large scenarios. For example, it is possible to
perform a site selection and optimization for a network that supports millions of subscribers,
typically composed of thousands of cells, without the need to divide the network into smaller
clusters. This superior scalability is achieved without impacting the modeling of the access network
which is exactly the same in the Mentum Planet ACP and in the Mentum Planet network analysis
and simulation solutions. For end users, this means results that can be trusted for larger networks,
effectively making it very convenient to use an ACP.

Interactive Cell Planning Capabilities

When using an ACP, it is important for the engineer to understand and evaluate the
recommendations that are proposed. In effect, the ACP does not replace the work of the engineer
but simply facilitates and accelerates the decision-making process. The Mentum Planet ACP offers a
complete set of capabilities to examine the recommendations made by the ACP. Completely
integrated with the Mentum Planet ACP, this feature not only makes the analysis of a
recommendation easier but also facilitates the comparison of scenarios against each other in order
to determine an optimal solution.

Single Site Optimization (SSO) Module

The engineers local knowledge is often one of the most important elements in creating a good
network design that will lead to the lowest possible cost and the best possible performance. The
SSO can assist the engineer who is performing manual network design optimization by speeding up
and simplifying the process associated with antenna configuration changes which are done either
entirely manually or using automatic optimization. With the SSO, the engineer can try more
options, visualize the outcome easily, and can measure the impact of these changes in near real
time. This leads to faster and better decision making.
