Eternal Destination

Passage John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him
shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

“For God [Father] so [houtos, in this manner] loved [agapao, regarded the welfare of] the
world [the object of His wrath], that He gave [sacrifice for the elect] His only [no other
brother] begotten [eternal] Son [Christ], that whoever [regardless of race, age, sex, religion]
believes [faith] in Him [as God] shall not perish [Hell], but [contrast] have [that’s now] eternal
life [Heaven].”

- This is the second part of John 3:16. Last week we looked at the love of God.. Agapao, to regard the
welfare of others. And what is the siginificance of that in our relation to our neighbor.

- 1John 4:11 Beloved, if God in this manner regarded our welfare, we also ought to
regarded the welfare of one another.

- Now we are going to look at the Deity of Christ, and why is that important to our faith.

- But I bring out this subject, I should to teach about the contrast of eternal life and perish.

1. Contrasting eternal life and perish

1.1 The destinations of the world.

An as John 3:16 word it: Eternal Life and Perish.

1.1.1 Eternal Life

- John 3:16b - Eternal life begins when you put your faith in Christ. Yes, all of those who are in Christ,
right now, actually, have eternal life.

- What is Eternal life?

- In the bible those who have Eternal LIfe..

What we have in Heaven?

a. shall live in the house of God.
b. shall rule with Christ, our brother.
c. have inheritance
d. have rewards
e. have rest and joy.
f. shall enjoy perfect righteouness.

- But there is more to Eternal Life..

A. Adopted As sons
- [Goto Ref]
- Gal. 4:5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the
adoption as sons.
- Gal. 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
- I actually do not like the word Adoption. I feel like I am an outsider everytime I hear it. Hey! I
wanna feel like really belong to the Kingdom of God!
- I want Royal Blood running through my veins.

- I thank the Lord, because I can actually get away from the word Adoption.
- Adoption “huiothesia” - the placing as a son. Now that’s interesting.
- I was place in the Kingdom of God, as A son of God. I like the sound of that much
better.

B. Born by the Spirit

- [Goto Ref]
- John 3:8 “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it
comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
- Oh, Born.. another interesting word!
- Born “Gennao” to beget, or to be born.
- Our flesh was born by our parents.
- Our new life on the other hand, the new man (Col 3:11), is born by the Holy Spirit.
- Literally Those who has their faith in Christ, was given birth by the Holy Spirit.
That’s basically what it means by Gennao in this text.

- What’s the point?

- Now to take the truth found in Gal 4:5, the placing as sons and the truth found in John 3:8,
born of Spirit.
- I was place in the kingdom of God as Son because I am a son born by the Holy Spirit
for the Father above.
- Now that is not someone whom you can call an outsider. That is someone whose blood
is a royal blood.
- This position is far greater than english word “Adoption”.

C. Relationship with the Father

- [Goto Ref]
- Matt. 11:27 “All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son
except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the
Son wills to reveal Him.
- Know “epiginosko” - to know exactly.
- The Father and Son knows each other exactly.
- Ask your self this. How can you know someone exactly? As He is...
- Through a relationship.
- Immagine this. Jonh Doe you is Married to Jane Doe for 50 years. Who do
you think knows Jane Doe exactly? John Doe.
- Do you think Jane Does best friend knows her better than her
husbond?

- Remember Jesus being in the Bosom of the Father? That Father and Son relationship
we learned from last week?
- Their relationship, not just for 50 years, but for all eternity. They know each
other intimately and exactly.

- I am not saying Jesus learned the Father, but He knows Him exactly as He is in
their relationship.

- NOW ASK YOURSELF THIS. JESUS WHO KNOWS ETERNAL LIFE WITH THE
FATHER, HOW WOULD HE DESCRIBE ETERNAL LIFE?
[Goto Ref]
- John 17:3 “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus
Christ whom You have sent.
- Did He say being alive forever?
- Did He say it about the streets of gold?
- Did He say it eating drinking and be merry?

- Jesus Said, they may know.

The Know here is ginosko - “come to know” or to come into knowledge..

- knowledge is not intellectual, but relational. It involves being in

relationship.

- This is different from the word Know in Matt 11:27, Epigenosko, which
is to know exactly.
- It means only Jesus can know the Father exactly but us, we
will continue to know God and we will ever ever know the God
exactly. Forevever, we will know God.

- And this is ETERNAL LIFE, a relationship with God. God as our Father and
Jesus as our Brother. This is the essense of Eternal Life.

What is that relationship with the Father?

In the New Testatment, there is this word ABBA..
- Which is translated father in English.
- This is an ancient language called Syriac or Chaldee word, which is found three times
in the New Testament (Mark 14:36; Rom. 8:15; Gal. 4:6)
- Through frequent use in prayer, it gradually acquired the nature of a most sacred
proper name for a father.
- It canotes reverence.
- It is also a term expressing warm affection and confidence.
- It has no perfect equivalent in our language actually.
- Because the word father to us is very plain..

Now, Jesus calls the Father this way..

- Mark 14:36 And He was saying, “Abba! Father! All things are possible for You..

- Remember, the Father and the Son has a relationship exclusive to them only. And our
Lord addressed the Father as Abba.

- I am gonna tell you something remarkable.

[Goto Ref]
- Gal. 4:6 Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying,
“Abba! Father!”

- Does this mean that we have the same relationship with the Father as Jesus Christ?
Resounding YES!

- We who are born by the Holy Spirit, place as sons of God, could now relate to the Father as
real sons, and not adopted sons!!

- The Father in Heaven is now our Father, actually! We come to Him as true sons of God.
Real sons!
- You know what this means: The Father has duplicated His exclusive relatioship with His only
begotten Son to us!! We have something that Jesus have in Eternity, not just an inheritance!

- No longer Jesus could call God Abba Father alone.. we can as well.. every true believer of
Jesus.

- Think about this. Before creation, only Jesus relates to the Father this way, NOW, it is
duplicated in millions!!

- Before Jesus was the only son, NOW, Jesus has brothers (?)!!
- and Jesus taught us to relate to the Father this way (Matt 6:9). Pauls clearly
reveals this truth.

- I am acutally overwhelmed by this. I am just a created being, how could I possibly be place as
a son to this Father, like Jesus, the only begotten Son? I am, but a dust..

- And God is good. I will experience His goodness in full extent of this relationship in His
kingdom. And it will take all eternity and I would not be able to embrace it all.

- This is sweet!! I am excited! Are you?

- If you expect Heaven to be a nice place, a street of gold, with beautiful skinny body, and
we can eat whatever we want and dont get fat.. If so, I think you’ve just reduce yourself to the
level of Muslims who believes that Heaven is a place of retirement and indulgense.

- Without knowing God, Heaven would be empty. Life would be empty without this relationship
with God.

- As the Lord said, this is eternal life. A relationship with the Father, and The Son and I am sure
this includes the Holy Spirit.

- Present Eternal Life.

- John 3:16b said those you believes in the son has Eternal Life, and thats now. Therefore
Eternal life is not just future. It is present.

- Those of you who have your faith in Christ, this relationship is now available to you. I ASK, by
the authority of the scripture, Relate to the Father as your own beloved Father. Literally. As
Christ did.
- Love Him, glorify Him, Obey Him, and rely on Him as Christ did.
- Cultivate your relationship with Him by working out your salvation (Phil 2:12).
- Look at our Brother Jesus Christ on how He relates to the Father and follow His
example(Matt 4:4).
- You know I hear people pray..
“Dear Lord”, “Dear God”.. whichi is right, however in light of the Scipture, we are
encourage aswell to address our God to be our OWN Father in Heaven. To cry
out, ABBA, FATHER! JUST AS THE LORD JESUS DOES.

- Now let us talk about Hell.

1.2 Perish

- Perish is the opposite of Eternal Life.

[Goto Ref]
- John 3:16
- Perish “Apollumi” - To destroy, to put out of the way entirely.

- Perish here is under the same level of life, eternal life.

- In other words, a person is either would receive a new life, which is eternal life. Or the life he
has will be destroyed, or put out of the way entirely.

Let us look at one example of this in the bible.

- When Cain murdered His brother Abel, God punish him. Let us see the
punishment.
[Goto Ref]
Gen. 4:12 The Lord said, “When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield
its strength to you; you will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth.”

- This is Cains punishment, the destruction of his life. How?

- He lost Good harverst of the Land (he shall become poor)
- He lost Home all the days of His life and shall become a wanderer
- This is like a rich man turned into a BUM wandering in the streets of
downtown LA.

- Cain’s response to the judgment

[Goto Ref]
Gen. 4:13 Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is too great to bear!

- If this is already too great to bear for Cain, how much more Perish, “Apollumi” in
comparison to Eternal life in John 3:16

- So let us look at how great is the destruction of life.

- [Goto Ref]
-2Th. 1:8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not
obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
- 2Th. 1:9 These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the
presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,

- The Eternal Destruction here is being away from the Lord. Separated from Him.
- As Matt. 7:23 Jesus said ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO
PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS. ’
- In this verse, You see the word Knew, or Know (this is about
relationship that never existed). These people never had a relationship
with God.

- They will suffer separation from God

- If you are separated from God then you’ve lost..

a. the priviledge of living in the house of God.
b. The rulership with Christ, our brother.
c. An inheritance
d. Rewards
e. Rest and joy.
f. Perfect righteouness.
g. And on top of all: You’ve lost a Father and son relationship wih God and a
relationship Jesus along with His Spirit: the greatest blessing of God.
- There are more lost..

- People who shall perish are rejected by God and they shall not find God’s earthly
blessings in hell.
Nah. 1:7, Ps 86:5 - The LORD is good!

- Acts 14:17 God did good, [WHETHER WICKED OR RIGHTEOUS] and gave
rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying THEIR hearts with food and
gladness.”

- People do not want God. They reject Him. Oh but they love His
blessings.
- They enjoy the snow in the mountain
- The crystal clear flowing river, the sea, the beach..
- Car, Jewelries, House, Money..
- Food such as chocoloate, cheeseburger, that refreshing ice filled soda
to drink... Oh, so good.
- The seasons
- The love of Family and Friends.
- The good smelling flowers.
- The variaty of colors that God painted His creation.
- The Sun that gives light.

- All of these good things shall be lost because - GOD who is good IS
NOT IN HELL. There shall be no comfort from God.

- Sinners pretty much got what they want. I like to see it this way: They
rejected and abandoned God.

- So to summarize Perish, it is the destruction of life by

- the lost of God and His benefits!
- the lost of Heaven!
- the lost of Earth!
- And the gain difficulties.
- It is eternal lost and misery without rest.

- And this is forever

- Forever God will not remember Mercy
- Forever God will not remember Love.
- Forever God’s heart is shut to their cries.
- Forever this condition is irrivocable.

- A side note
One thing that I want you to know there is no Fire in Hell. Allow me to prove this.

- The weeping and gnashing of teeth..

- This figure of speech for extreme remorse and trauma.. this is emotional suffering therefore
this is not caused by literal fire.

- When weeping and gnashing of teeth is referenced, the cause is separation separation from
God, the source of all good (Matthew 8:12).
Matthew 13:41 - Cause: The sinners are thrown outside, into the darkness..
Matthew 13:49 - Cause: Separate the wicked and be thrown away.
Matt 24:51 - Cause: Sinners assigned to a place with the Hypocretes

- To best explaine the cause:

- [Goto Ref]
Luke 13:27 and He will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from; DEPART
FROM ME, ALL YOU EVILDOERS.’
Luke 13:28 “In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see
Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but
yourselves being thrown out.
Luke 13:29 “And they will come from east and west and from north and south, and will
recline at the table in the kingdom of God.

- DO YOU SEE THE LOST DUE TO SEPARATION FROM GOD?

- IN THAT DAY, There will be lamentation on those people who will see their friends, families,
loves ones, those who patiently shared the gospel to them are saved and they are lost.

- But I have to admit to you FIRE is mentioned in the bible referring to Hell. Yes it is. But what is
it really?

- Matthew 13:30 - The parable of the wheat and tares, Fire was used to destroy the Tares. Fire
here is a methaphor.
- John 15:6 - The parable of the vine and the branches, Fire again was used to destroy the bad
branches. Fire is a methaphor.

- Keep this in mind: In this two parables Fire is use to DESTROY.

[Goto Ref]
Deut. 9:3 “Know therefore today that it is the LORD your God who is crossing over before you as
a consuming fire. He will destroy them...
Is. 30:30 And the LORD will cause His voice of authority to be heard, And the descending of His
arm to be seen in fierce anger, And in the flame of a consuming fire
In cloudburst, downpour and hailstones.
[YOU READ]
Heb. 12:29 for our God is a consuming fire.

- THESE VERSE TALKS ABOUT THE ANGER OF GOD COMPARABLE TO A COMSUMING

FIRE. THE EFFECT IS DESTRUCTION JUST LIKE THE FIRE IN THE PARABLES.

- COULD IT BE THAT THE FIRE IN HELL IS NOT A LITERAL FIRE BUT THE WRATH OF
GOD BEING POURED? A RESOUNDING YES.

- John 3:16 - Talks about Perish, a complete ruin.

- The same as Matthew 10:28, a destruction.
- Luke 13:27-28 - The pain of separation from God.
- Heb. 12:29 - The wrath of God that destroys people.
- There you go, a fireless Hell.

- We do not serve God who will barbeque people in Hell for all eternity. He is a Just God. And
they got what they deserve, which is a separation from God whom they rejected and I am sure
MANY MANY TIMES.

- My point is this.
- I encourage everyone not to present the Gospel by causing fear of Fire in Hell! There is no fire
in Hell.

- We want sinners to repent because they are convicted of their sins.

- Many have come to Christ out of fear of literal Fire than genuine repentance. And this has
produced shallow devotion to God. They basically got what they wanted, away from the Fire of
Hell.

2. Believe in the Son

- But Jesus said you do not have to go there.

[Goto Ref]
John 3:16
- Believe in the Only Begotten Son of God and you shall have eternal life!

- The question is why is it that by believing in the Son of God we have eternal life? WHY?

The answer:
Heb. 9:12 - Jesus have obtained eternal redemption.

How?

Heb. 9:14 - Through His blood (his death).

- Jesus was able to pay the infinite wrath of God, every drop of the cup of wrath. Or in
other words, Jesus was able to exhaust the infinite wrath of God in 3 hours (John 19:30).

- If Jesus was able to exhause the infinite wrath of God, does this mean the HE is
infinite?

- IF SO, then Jesus is God.

- But what if someone said.. “Well I am not convinse that Jesus is God. after all He never said He is
God! HE NEVER DID”

- Did Jesus never ever say He is God? To answer this question we have to understad the NAME OF
GOD.

[Goto Ref]
Ex. 3:13 ¶ Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to
them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His
name?’ What shall I say to them?”
Ex. 3:14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of
Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
Ex. 3:15 God, furthermore, said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘The LORD,
the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent
me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations.

- Thus I enter a hot topic in the bible.

- One fact: There are lots of confusion Exodus 3:14. And it is my hope to clear all
confusions.

- For us to be able to understand what God is saying on these verses, we need to understand the
following:
- Background and Settings, and context. If we can understand these, Exodus 3:13 to 15
should be easy to figure out.. but remains hard to explain.
- So I need your full attention. What I want is try to hear all what I need to say
before you make judgment of what I am saying.

- The context:
From Gen 3:13 to 15 -- you need these 3 verses to understand what God what God
meant here.

- A little bit of Background and setting:

- Moses was raised by an Egyptian Princess, He later killed an Egyptian, and Fled to the
Land of Midian to escape His crime.
- Midian is a son of Abraham; and this is His country and (collectively) his descendants.
- Moses has been living in land of Midian for prolly 40-50 years now.
- This is the time when Moses spoke with God in Mount Horeb for the first time.
- The sons of Israel have been in Egypt for 430 years now.
- The sons of Israel are primitive people.

- What is “I AM WHO I AM” v.14b

- To understand this statement, we need to understand the question raised by Moses on
v.13. Because verse 14 is God’s answer to the question.

[Goto Ref]
Ex. 3:13 - The question is “What is His name?”

- What do they mean by that? Two things we need to know to understand this question.

A. The ons of Israel have been in Egypt 430 years now (Ex 12:40).
- Egypt back then is a country that worships many false gods.

- A new Egyptian Pharoah who worships a different god would replace the
former Pharoah’s god.
- Which means there are gods that are not a popular god suddenly
becomes a national god in Egypt (depending on which Pharoah)
- Egypt is known to chipping off the name of a god on their temple to
replace it with another god.

- Further.. In Egypt
- some gods are born
- some gods are created
- they die..
- they get married and have kids, etc.

- Therefore the Hebrews living in Egypt, they may have seen the rise and fall,
birth and death of a god.

- Hebrews also have learned to worship an idols in Egypt. Remember that later
on they demanded a god made by hands, also known as the The Golden Calf
(Ex. 32:1). This shows that they do this in Egypt.

B. In biblical thinking, personal names have meanings, and often a summary of

statement of a person’s character.
- Jacob - heel-catcher
- Isaac - He laughs..
- Ben-Oni - son of my sorrow,
- Benjamine - Son of the right hand.
- Abraham - Father of many nations.
- 1Sam. 25:25 “Please do not let my lord pay attention to this worthless
man, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. Nabal is his name and folly is
with him; but I your maidservant did not see the young men of my lord
whom you sent.

- Using the background and culture to know the meaning of the question. This is
not a question of WHAT but WHO!

- WHO is He (among many gods), is the question.

- And it is so, God answered that question that way.
- God did not say “Oh, my name is god Bob!”.
- But He treated that questioin as WHO referring to WHO HE IS!

- But God did not give a direct answer to the question on verse 13. What He
said is “I AM WHO I AM”.

- This is a statement of revelation.

- What do I mean?

- God who has many attributtes cannot be summarized in words.

- God cannot jsut say “I am the creator of heavens and earth”. Well, God is not
just that. God is also Sovereign. He is also Holy, etc.

- To put simply, God is saying: Whatever I choose to reveal to you is WHO I

AM.

- Examples of His revelations:

- I AM jealouse (Ex. of I am who Iam)
- I AM Holy (Ex. of I am who I am)
// expound more..

- Therefore the name of God is not a label (like Bob, Lisa, Jerry) but a
description of WHO HE IS!

- In other words, GOD’S NAME IS HIS ATTRIBUTES (WHO HE IS).

ATTRIBUTES THAT HE REVEALED OR GOING TO REVEAL.

- Let me say it again. The name of God is His attributes. All of His attribute is
the name of God.

- Therefore God is known, addressed, or referred to on WHO HE IS and not a

meaningless sound or word (such as Bob or Jerry).
Examples:
Adonai-YHVH -- The Lord our Sovereign
YHVH-Elohim -- The Eternal Creator
YHVH-Jireh -- The Lord our Provider
YHVH-Sabaoth -- The Lord of Hosts
- Did God reveal anything here about Himself? NO. But He is about to on the next sentense.

- Many people would say, this is about His eternality! God is simply saing “My name is who I
am”, period.

- An illustration (to clarify verse 14b and 15).

- Before I go further, let me tell you a story about myself learning who God is..

- In my early years I learned that God is not a created being. Therefore He has
no beginning and He has no end. For the first time in my life God is eternal

- Did I understand that? NO! I was confuse! I could not make sense of it.

- I could not understand what I learned because I had no concept of eternal (just
like the sons of Israel).

- Now if someone had told me that God exist in the life of my great grand father,
and in the life of my grand father, in the life of my parent, in my lifetime, and in
the future people’s lifetime.

- Do you think I would be able to understand this? YES. This is easier to

understnad.

- You know what? This is exactly what is happeing here.

- The sons of Israel or the ancient nation of Israel HAD NO CONCEPT OF

ETERNITY.

- INSTEAD OF ETERNITY, IN HEBREW THEY WILL SAY “FROM THE AGES

AGO”, OR “FROM THE ANCIENT TIME” OR “LONG DURATION”
- THESE WORDS ARE STIL IN VIEW OF TIME. BUT STILL THESE
WORDS ARE TRANSLATED AS EVERLASTING OR ETERNITY IN
ENGLISH BIBLE EVEN THOUGH ETERNITY IS TIMELESS.

- IF THE JEW HAVE LIMITED COMPREHENSI ON, WHAT GOD CAN REVEAL
ABOUT ETERNITY IS ALSO LIMITED.

- AND SO GOD USED A HEBREW WORD THAT IS CLOSES TO DESCRIBE

HIM BEING ETERNAL.

- Actually two words.

- Eheyeh - English “I AM”
- Yahhoveh - English “HE IS”

- AM and IS are singular present “BE”. BE is a verb. Verb describes an action,

state, or occurrance.

- In these verses 14 and 15, AM and IS are not action or occurance BUT a state.

- Again, I have to repeat just to make sure it’s clear. Eheyeh and Yahhoveh are
not words equal to Eternal. These words are the closest words to Eternal.
Remember Jews has no concept of Eternal.

- What is “I AM” (EHEYEH) then v.14b

- I, a pronoun, first person singular. Refereing to the person speaking..
- Am, 1st person singular present of BE (as I said)
- Be is exist.

- I Am as it is, is I exist.

- This is a statement of existance in present time.

- Basically, God exists now!.

- What is “HE IS”(YAHHOVEH) on v.15

- LORD here is Hebrew word is YHVH or YAHHOVEH with vowels.

- IS, third person singular present of BE (just like AM)

- Be is exist.

- In english: HE IS. The same meaning “HE exist”. “Exist presently.

- This is again a statement of existance in the present tiem.

- So “I AM” and “HE IS” are both statement of existance.

- The YAHHOVEH “The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob” v.15bb

- Now God who exist in the present time, the “I AM” and the “HE IS” is saying that He is
present in the Time of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

- This is a statement of CONTINEOUS existance.

- So what did God revealed here? That HE EXIST AND CONTINOUS TO EXIST.
THAT HE IS PRESENT AND ALWAYS PRESENT ALL THE TIME. THAT ALL THAT
HE SAID.

- THIS THE CLOSEST EXPLANATION OF ETERNITY TO THE JEWS. ETERNITY

HAS NO BEGINNING AND NO END. JUST CONTINOUSE EXISTANCE WITHIN TIME
AND OUTSIDE OF TIME.

- AS YOU CAN SEE, WHAT GOD REVEALED IS CLOSE TO THE EXPLANATION OF

ETERNITY. BUT NOT EXACTLY BECAUSE TO THE JEWS, THIS IS WITHIN THE
REALM OF TIME. AND ETERNITY IS TIMELESS.

- GOD could not possibly reveal the complete meaning of it because the Jews have no
concept of eternal. God had to use a word that is closes to eternal.

- God could only tell them that He is Eternal within the limited comprehension of
the Jews. Within the boundaries of their language.

- HIS NAME HERE REVEALED TO THE JEWS IS CONTINOUS EXISTANCE. That’s

WHO HE IS (I am who I am).

- This makes God distinct among the gods of Egypt, which the Hebrew became
aquainted.

- This is a new understanding to the Jews who has seen gods of egypt come and go, rise
and fall, born and die.

- Now why is it that God used I AM (EHEYEH) and HE IS (YAHHOVEH) which mean the
same thing.. both are statement of existance.

- Again this is easy to figure out, but hard to explain..

- God said,
“tell them I AM has sent you” v.14
Then further..
“Tell them He is” v.15, 16, 18

- As you would notice, there is a change of sharing God’s name here.. From I AM
(EHEYEH) to HE IS (YAHHOVEH).

V. 15, 16 - LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac..
V. 18 - LORD, the God of the Hebrews

- As I said, LORD here is YAHHOVEH. IN English “HE IS”. Now let us put “HE IS” in
there

V. 15, 16 - HE IS, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac..
V. 18 - HE IS, the God of the Hebrews

- That’s what basically Moses is saying. What if we used I AM (the EHEYEH) instead of
HE IS (YAHHOVEH).

- I it would look like this.

V. 15, 16 - I AM, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac..
V. 18 - I AM, the God of the Hebrews

- It would sound like Moses is the God of Hebrews. A blasphemous stamement worthy
of stoning!

- To avoid this problem Moses should say HE IS (as God told Moses). So that He does
not refer to himself as God.

- You see, only God who can say I AM (EHEYEH). His people would say HE IS
(YAHHOVEH). Again I have to remind you I AM and HE IS both say GOD exist.

- And so when God did this. The Jews used HE IS (YAHHOVEH) to refer to God,
instead of I AM (EHEYEH).

- The Jews do not say “God is I AM (EHEYEH)”. They say “God is HE IS (YAHHOVEH).
YAHHOVEH becomes a prefix to the revelation of God, WHO HE IS.
- EXAMPLES
YAHHOVEH-Elohim - The Eternal Creator
YAHHOVEH-Jireh - The Lord our Provider

- I have a hunch...

- In modern Hebrew. They do not say I am. If one would say in Hebrew “I am a
teacher”, it would be “I teacher, or I doctor”. No I am. This is interesting because they
simple don’t use I am. I believe this is link to Exodus 3:14-16. I think it is.

As a side note (Optional, depends on time):

- YAHHOVEH in Genesis.
- A friend of mine said the YHVH is used in Genesis therefore I AM has been revealed
by God in Exodus. That Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob know this name of God.

- Examples..
[Goto Ref]
Gen. 22:14 Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said
to this day, “In the mount of the LORD it will be provided.”
- Even Adam’s wife EVE mentioned this name.
Gen. 4:1 “I have gotten a manchild with the help of the LORD.”

- Are they really saying YahHoveh or are they saying another name?

[Goto Ref]
Ex. 6:3 and I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My
name, LORD, I did not make Myself known to them.

- Two possible interpretations.

A. It means Abraham, Isaac, and Jacod never knew this name.
- It mean when Moses wrote Genesis, when He quoted people, He used
Yahhoveh.. that the people, such as Even and Abraham did not really
Say Yahhoveh but another name of God in another language.

B. Or they knew this name but not the meaning.

- It mean in before Genesis people are literally calling God Yahhoveh
but they did not know the meaning of it.
- The problem of this is, God is referred to by a meaningless name. Like
Bob, or Jerry..
- But this is hard to believe becausee In the bible God is alwasy referred
to with a name that has meaning. Always.. We do not call Him god Bob.

- So, I like the first interpretation better. That Moses used Yahhoveh to refer to
God when He wrote Genesis.

- Therefore the first person who learned about this name is Moses in the Mount Horeb
(Ex 3:14).

- Not ony that but Moses was already applying tetragram on the name of God (YHVH)
from the very first instance of it.
- Example (Gen 2:4, 5, 7, 4:1, and many more)

- It means when Moses wrote Genesis and Exodus, he already received the 10
commandments! Because He was already applying the commandment number
3, you shall not put the name of the Lord in vain.

- This is the name of God, HE EXIST CONTINOUSLY.. Now, in the new Testament, someone claimed
that HE EXIST AND CONTINOUS TO EXIST, which is blasphemous to the Jews. Next week I will tell
you that HE IS WHO HE IS.

- God is revealed in Scripture. Are you diligent to know His name?
