Los Angeles, CA, June 04, 2010 -- Readers addicted to nonfiction, fiction and po
etry have long been getting their fix at the online culture magazine The Nervous
Breakdown (TNB), a site founded by bestselling author Brad Listi (Attention. De
ficit. Disorder.). Now, in partnership with Hukilau, TNB will be launching its o
wn publishing imprint, producing print, e-book, transmedia, and audio books for
lit fans worldwide. Its e-book offerings will be targeted for the iPad, Kindle,
and other major e-publishing platforms.
“We feel like this is a natural next step,” said Listi. “TNB is an outgrowth of
book culture, and we’re excited to be publishing on our own imprint. We’re also
excited about the possibilities offered by new technologies.”
“We ‘re proud to be partnered with TNB on this groundbreaking venture,” said Huk
ilau founder Joseph Matheny. “Providing the technological framework for distribu
tion and creation fits into our company’s philosophy of providing development, p
roduction and distribution for independent media.”
Founded in 2006, TNB has quickly become one of the web’s most beloved publicatio
ns devoted to literature and the arts, as well as a vibrant community of writers
and readers. Fittingly, its first publication will be a collection of nonfictio
n by D.R. Haney, one of the site’s most popular contributors. Haney, author of t
he underground classic Banned for Life, a novel about punk rock, will be publish
ing a collection titled Subversia on the TNB imprint. The book will feature Hane
y’s original work from the site, along with three new pieces, never before publi
shed. The e-book edition, available on all major e-reader platforms, will includ
e a documentary film about Haney directed by Los Angeles filmmaker and award-win
ning music photographer Timothy Murray.
Going forward, TNB plans to publish at least one title per month. All editions—p
rint, e-book, audio—will be made available on the site itself, at the new TNB Bo
okstore. Print editions will also be available at all major online retailers, in
cluding Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and IndieBound. E-book editions will be availabl
e at all major e-book retailers, including Amazon, the iBookstore, and BN.com. A
nd Audio books will be available via iTunes and Audible.com.
Hukilau will be building and providing the production and distribution framework
, utilizing the Asemblook tools developed by founder Joseph Matheny. It will als
o be working with TNB to develop proprietary production and distribution tools f
or ePub, iPad, Kindle and PDF-rich media eBooks.
