Music to be Performed at the 41st Annual Kathaumixw Competition

AND Recorded for our new Compact Disc!
Since becoming the first-ever American choir to win the prestigious Seghizzi competition in its 52-year history, The Portland
State Chamber Choir has been invited to represent the United States at the 15th International Choral Kathaumixw in Powell
River, BC this July and will be the first American choir in several years to compete at the 46th Annual Tolosa Choral Contest
in Spain this coming October. The Chamber Choir has also had the privilege to work with producer John Atkinson, the editor
of Stereophile Magazine over this past week recording numerous tracks for our upcoming compact disc.

Hear My Prayer, O Lord!

Henry Purcell (1659-1695)

Hear my prayer, O Lord! And let my crying come unto Thee.

Christus Factus Est

Carlos Kalmar, guest conductor (May 18 only)

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896)

Christ became obedient for us unto death, even to the death, death on the cross.
Therefore God exalted Him and gave Him a name which is above all names.

Northern Lights

Jonathan Green, soloist

Latvian (soloist): Whenever at night, far in the north I saw the kvi soldiers (Northern Lights) having their battle,
I was afraid, perhaps they might bring a war to my land, too.
English (choir): It was night, and I had gone on deck several times. Iceberg was silent; I too was silent.
It was true dark and cold. At nine oclock I was below in my cabin, when the captain hailed me with the words:
Come above, Hall, come above at once, Hall! The world is on fire! I knew his meaning, and quick as thought,
I rushed to the companion stairs. In a moment I reached the deck, and as the cabin door swung open,
a dazzling light, overpowring light burst upon my startled senses!
Oh, the whole sky was one glowing mass of colored flames, so mighty, so brave!
Like a pathway of light the northern lights seemed to draw us into the sky.
Yes, it was harp-music, wild storming in the darkness; the strings trembled and sparkled in the glow of the flames
like a shower of fiery darts. A fiery crown of auroral light cast a warm glow across the arctic ice.
Like a pathway of light the northern lights seemed to draw us into the sky.
Again at times it was like softly playing, gently rocking, silvery waves, on which dreams travel into unknown worlds.

In the Beginning was the Word

Peteris Butans (b. 1942)

In word and deed the Word struggled with fate, the Word was flesh, the Word was you. My word was wretched, but not Gods.
Words are sharpened by streams of honey, they break up into flocks, they wrap themselves into suites,
But Your name alone is the subject of all words.
I prayed for mercy, I begged for alms while choosing my reward from Your heaven and hell.

Gloria Patri

Budi Susanto Yohanes (b. 1979)

Glory to the Father and Son and Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning, is now and always, and for ages of ages. Amen.

Three Reincarnations
1. Mary Hynes

Samuel Barber (1910-1981)

She is the sky of the sun! She is the dart of love! She is the love of my heart! She is a rune!
She is above the women of the race of Eve, As the sun is above the moon!
Lovely and airy the view from the hill That looks down Ballylea!
But no good sight is good, Until you see the blossom of the branches Walking towards you, airily.

2. Anthony ODaly

Since your limbs were laid out The stars do not shine! The fish leap not out in the waves!

On our meadows The dew does not fall in the morn, For O Daly is dead!
Not a flowr can be born! Not a word can be said! Not a tree have a leaf!
Anthony! After you there is nothing to do! There is nothing but grief!

3. The Coolin

Come with me under my coat, and we will drink the milk of the white goat, or wine if it be thy will.
And we will talk until talk is a trouble too out on the side of the hill.
And nothing is left to do but an eye to look into an eye, and a hand in a hand to slip;
and a sigh to answer a sigh; And a lip to find out a lip!
What if the night be black, and the air on the mountain chill, Where the goat lies down in its track and all but the fern is still?
Stay with me under my cloak, and we will drink our fill of the milk of the white goat out on the side of the hill.

Si le Temps tait un Homme

Anthony Nguyen (b. 1994)

If time was a man, his breaths would be calm, even in the fiercest winds birthed by raging storms.
Storms that the gods would fear. Whistling winds orchestrating nothing but pandemonium.
If time was a man, equality would be his obsession.
He would be the true judge because he does not judge. He could not be bribed with worldly gifts.
If time was a man, his tongue would wave in flavors of truth. The bitter truth. The taste of sweet
success. The sour sting of betrayal. Salt gradually abandoned the tears of angels.
If time was a woman, her heart would be weak.
If time was a man, he would live forever. His death like birth.
He writes of the future but only reads of the past.
But alas, time is not a man. A dream of tranquility shattered by the stumbling of man.
He can be trusted for nothing but nothing.

Choral Music at Portland State University now includes six choirs with over 300 singers: new this year are a
Contemporary Jazz Collective and a Community Chorus. Founded in 2011, the Portland State Man Choir and
Vox Femina are two auditioned ensembles that broaden the range of vocal and choral styles available to PSU
students and that combine with the Portland State Symphony Orchestra to perform major works. Portland State
welcomed acclaimed conductor and composer Joan Szymko to the faculty this past Fall to conduct Vox Femina.
The University Choir continues to be Portland States non-auditioned choir open to all, and often numbers over
100 singers. All these choirs sing a wide variety of literature from Classical music to spirituals, gospel music, and
even pop songs.
The Portland State Chamber Choir is the top choral ensemble at Portland State. Since its founding in 1975, the
Chamber Choir has performed and competed in venues across the country and around the world. In 2013, the
Chamber Choir competed in the Seghizzi International Competition for Choral Singing in Gorizia, Italy where
they earned 15 separate awards and became the first American Choir ever to win the Grand Prize in the
competitions 52-year history. In 1999 and 2005, the Chamber Choir won four medals at choral competitions in
Martkoberdorf, Germany. The Chamber Choir appeared at national conferences of the American Choral Directors
Association in 1985, 1997, and 2003. The choir has also appeared at conferences for the National Association for
Music Education and the International Society for Music Education. This summer the Chamber Choir will

compete at the International Choral Kathaumixw in Powell River, Canada and next Fall at the Tolosa Choral
Contest in Tolosa, Spain. The group has collaborated with leading conductors such as Frieder Bernius, Andrew
Parrot, Robert Shaw, James DePreist, Carlos Kalmar and Eric Ericson.
The Chamber Choir has recorded on the Albany Label. In November 2003, the choir recorded the choral music of
Margaret Garwood on the Hildegard Label; and in 2006 the Chamber Choir released the first English language
recordings of the choral music of Veljo Tormis, at the request of Tormis himself. In February, 2011 the Chamber
Choir collaborated with Portland-born composer Morten Lauridsen, who described their singing as an absolutely
top-notch superb display of choral artistry. The Chamber Choirs new CD A Drop in the Ocean was favorably
reviewed and featured in both Fanfare and Stereophile magazines, and was a finalist for the 2012 American Prize in
Choral Music. You can find it at iTunes, Amazon, CDBaby or at any of this seasons concerts. The Chamber Choir
will be recording their next album this spring.

Hailed by The Oregonian for providing the finest choral concerts in Portland in recent memory, Ethan Sperry is
in his fourth year as Director of Choral Activities at Portland State University and his third year as Artistic
Director and Conductor of Oregon Repertory Singers. Sperry began studying conducting at the age of eight, cello
at the age of twelve, and singing at the age of eighteen. He has earned a bachelor's degree in Philosophy from
Harvard College and Masters and Doctoral degrees in Choral Conducting from the University of Southern
California. Ensembles under his direction have toured to Bermuda, Canada, China, Estonia, Finland, France,
Germany, Guadeloupe, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Puerto Rico, Russia, and Taiwan, and have
performed at major venues in the United States including The Hollywood Bowl, The Kennedy Center, The
Washington National Cathedral, St. Patricks Cathedral in New York City, The Nassau Coliseum, Cincinnatis
Music Hall, Bostons Symphony Hall, and the United Nations.
A prolific arranger of World Music for choirs, Dr. Sperry is the editor of the Global Rhythms series for Earthsongs
Music, one of the best-selling choral series in the country. Sperry is also a frequent collaborator with film composer
AR Rahman and has appeared as a guest conductor for him numerous times including at Bollywood Night at the
Hollywood Bowl and the 2008 Filmfare Awards, the Indian equivalent of the Oscars. He also serves as a
consultant for the KM Music Conservatory in Chennai, the first classical music school in India, which opened in
2009. From 2000-2010, Dr. Sperry was on the faculty at Miami University in Ohio where he conducted the Mens
Glee Club, Collegiate Chorale, and Global Rhythms Ensembles. From 2000-2006 he was the artistic administrator
of the Arad Philharmonic Chorus in Arad, Romania, and from 2001-2003 was the principal conductor of the
Choeur Regional de Guadeloupe, the only symphonic choir in the French West Indies.
The Chamber Choir is honored to have Carlos Kalmar with us on May 18 as a guest conductor. The women of
the Chamber Choir sang Debussys Les Sirenes for him with the Oregon Symphony this past February, and the
entire Chamber Choir will sing Handels Messiah with Carlos and The Oregon Symphony in December, 2015.
Carlos Kalmar was born in Uruguay to Austrian parents and lives in Portland. He is in his eleventh season as
music director of the Oregon Symphony. He is also chief conductor and artistic director of the Spanish
Radio/Television Orchestra and Choir in Madrid, and artistic director and principal conductor of the Grant Park
Music Festival in Chicago. He showed an early interest in music and began violin studies at the age of six. By the
time he was fifteen his musical promise was such that his family moved back to Austria in order for him to study
conducting with Karl Osterreicher at the Vienna Academy of Music. Before coming to Portland he served as
music director for the Hamburg Symphony, the Stuttgart Philharmonic, Viennas Tonnkunsterorchester and the
Anhaltisches Theater in Dessau, Germany.
