INTRODuCTION & DESCRIPTION OF UNIT OPERATION

INTRODuCTION
The variable air volume (vav) system is applicable to the most building in which may be successfully applied to all-air
types of air conditioning system. the objective of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (hvac) system is to satisfy
users when it comes to health, indoor air quality (iaq), and thermal comfort. air conditioning systems employed to
provide thermal comfort and indoor air quality consume a significant part of the building energy requirement. compared
with other all air systems, such as double duct & multi-zone, the variable air volume system offers inherent savings in
both installation and operating costs. a variable air volume (vav) system enables 24% to 20% energy savings in the
chiller and 20% to 48% for the fan system.

APPLICATION
Variable air volume systems are widely used where individual zone control is desired, such as commercial buildings,
hospitals and schools. Where simultaneous heating and cooling of different areas within a structure are required, the
variable air volume system can be coupled with a supplementary heating system. This system may be simply a hot water
coil or an electric radiation type for perimeter heating, and may be coupled with a sound attenuator, a multiple-outlet
attenuator, a multiple-outlet octopus, etc.
A variable air volume system can be installed in an existing high energy air system for system energy conservation.

DESCRIPTION OF UNIT OPERATION

HACE variable air volume terminal units are controlled to provide varying amounts of conditioned air to a space in
response to a room thermostat.
When used in a cooling application, cold air is supplied to the terminal unit; as the room temperature increases above
the set point of the thermostat, a signal is sent to open the terminal unit damper. This allows more cold air to be
delivered to the space.
When the room temperature falls less than the thermostat set point, a signal is sent to close the terminal unit damper,
decreasing the amount of cold air delivered to the space.
When used in a heating application, warm air is supplied to the terminal unit; as the room temperature increases above
the set point of the thermostat, a signal is sent to close the terminal unit damper. This decreases the amount of warm
air delivered to the space.
When the temperature falls less than the thermostat set point, a signal is sent to open the terminal unit damper,
increasing the amount of warm air delivered to the space.
The terminal units may also be used for constant volume control. When used in constant air volume systems, a manually
adjustable damper quadrant may be provided to lock the damper in the position necessary to deliver the required air
flow, based on the actual entering static pressure. When constant air volume to a specific zone is required in a variable
air volume system, controls must be provided that will maintain that constant volume, regardless of changes in the duct
static pressure.
Since certain zones in commercial buildings may require simultaneous cooling and heating (even during winter) VAV
boxes can also include reheat coils (either electric or hot water), to provide heat as a secondary simultaneous process
to the primary air or re-circulated room air to meet the space set point.

DAMPER CONTROL METHODS

VAV boxes typically operate in two basic methods of controlling the unit damper. They are referred to as pressure-dependent
and pressure-independent.

Pressure-dependent
Thermostat directly controls the position of the damper. The volume of air is determined by the damper actuator position
and VAV inlet static pressure.

Pressure-independent (independent of static pressure entering VAV)

The quantity of airflow to the space is measured at the VAV based on feedback from an airflow-measuring device in the box.
The thermostat controls the volume of air to the zone space. A minimum and maximum airflow are calibrated for each VAV
and the thermostat will control the air volume within this range. The thermostat does not directly control the position of the
damper actuator.

generl specification
The Model S offers a wide range of unit sizes in airflow capacities to
10,000 CFM in a low profile VAV terminal. The units are designed to
control with minimum static pressure requirements and low noise
operation. Units are certified incompliance with the requirements of
AHRI Standard 880 for air terminals and are Intertek listed complying
with the requirement of UL-429.The Model S unit is provided with
inlets suitable for round duct installations at the discharge, the units
are formed to provide for easy S & Drive connection to down stream
ducts.
The standard model S terminal unit is constructed of heavy 22 gauge zinc-coated steel (galvanized steel), internally lined
with 1 glass fiber material faced with black, strong, durable, and stable woven glass fabric having UL 181 approval against
air erosion and meeting NFPA-90A. The unit damper is constructed of exactly dimensioned extruded anodized aluminum,
mechanically keyed and fastened to a damper shaft which rotates in maintenance free nylon bearings for noiseless operation.
The average damper leakage of all units does not exceed 2% of rated air flow at 3 inlet static pressure.
The Model S terminal unit is available with optional hot water reheat (Model HSW) or electric resistance heat (Model HSE).
The hot water coils are available in one row or two rows configuration. The coils are constructed from 1/2 OD seamless
copper tubes mechanically bonded to aluminum fins. The electric resistance heaters meet the requirement of UL-1996
and National Electric Code (NEC) requirements. Coils are provided with S & Drive connections on the inlet side and flange
connections on the discharge. Standard heater options include automatic primary thermal reset, manual secondary thermal
reset, control line terminal blocks, magnetic contactors or P/E switches as required by heater construction, 80-20 Ni-Ch
heater element, and airflow proving switch with probe.

Dual Duct Terminal Unit - Model (SX)

Dual Duct Terminal Unit - Model (SX)

general specification
The Model SX offers a wide range of unit sizes in airflow capacities to 2,400
CFM in a low profile VAV terminal. The units are designed to control with
minimum static pressure requirements with extremely low noise operation
due to smooth mixing of the hot and cold airflows and internal acoustical
treatment in the attenuator mixing section. Units are certified in compliance
with the requirements of AHRI Standard 880 for air terminals. The Model
SX unit is provided with inlets suitable for round duct installations. at the
discharge, the units are formed to provide for easy S & Drive connection to
down stream ducts.

The standard model SX terminal unit is constructed of heavy 22 gauge zinc-coated steel (galvanized steel), mixer/attenuator
section, internally lined with 1 glass fiber material faced with black, strong, durable, and stable woven glass fabric having
UL 181 approval against air erosion and meeting NFPA-90A. The unit dampers are constructed of exactly dimensioned
extruded anodized aluminum, mechanically keyed and fastened to a damper shaft which rotates in maintenance free
nylon bearings for noiseless operation.
The Model SX double duct terminal unit is a versatile product that can be adapted to numerous control schemes to suit
job requirements. It can provide constant volume for those special cases requiring constant airflow in the space, it can
provide constant volume on one duct and variable on the other or it can provide variable volume on both ducts with
or without mixing of hot and cold airflows. Selecting an airflow sequence that minimizes airflow mixing reduces energy
consumption.

LOW PROFILE Terminal Unit - Model (V)

LOW PROFILE Terminal Unit - Model (V)

general specification
The Model V offers a wide range of unit sizes in airflow capacities
to 5,000 CFM in a low profile VAV terminal. The units are designed
to control with minimum static pressure requirements and
low noise operation. Units are certified in compliance with the
requirements of AHRI Standard 880 for air terminals. The Model
V unit is provided with inlets suitable for round duct installations.
at the discharge, the units are formed to provide easy S & Drive
connection to down stream ducts.
The standard model V terminal unit is constructed of heavy 22 gauge zinc-coated steel (galvanized steel), internally lined
with 1 glass fiber material faced with black, strong, durable, and stable woven glass fabric having UL 181 approval against
air erosion and meeting NFPA-90A. The unit damper is constructed of exactly dimensioned extruded anodized aluminum,
mechanically keyed and fastened to a damper shaft which rotates in maintenance free nylon bearings for noiseless
operation. The average damper leakage of all units does not exceed 2% of rated airflow at 3 inlet static pressure.
The Model V terminal unit is available with optional hot water reheat (Model HVW). The hot water coils are available in
one row or two rows configuration. The coils are constructed from 1/2 OD seamless copper tubes mechanically bonded
to aluminum fins. Coils are provided with S & Drive connections on the inlet side and flange connections on the discharge.

The Model V terminal units can be paired together (Model VX) for perimeter applications in a dual duct system where
mixing is not required. The wide open pressure characteristic of the Model VX makes it ideal for installation in existing low
pressure constant volume dual duct systems to achieve variable volume energy savings.

Bypass Terminal Unit - Model (MSR)

Bypass Terminal Unit - Model (MSR)

GENERAL SPECIFICATION
The Model MSR relief type VAV terminal offers a wide range of unit sizes
in airflow capacities to 2,400 CFM. The units are designed to control
low to medium velocity, constant volume air distribution systems. Units
are certified in compliance with the requirements of AHRI Standard 880
for air terminals. Because of the unique field adjustable air balancing
damper included in the bypass section of the MSR terminal unit, the
static pressure loss through the unit can be matched at the bypass to
the return air plenum.

The Model MSR unit is provided with inlets suitable for round duct installations. At the discharge, the units are formed to
provide easy S & Drive connection to down stream ducts.
The standard Model MSR terminal unit is constructed of heavy 22 gauge zinc-coated steel (galvanized steel), internally
lined with 1 glass fiber material faced with black, strong, durable, and stable woven glass fabric having UL 181 approval
against air erosion and meeting NFPA-90A. The unit dampers are constructed of exactly dimensioned extruded anodized
aluminum, mechanically keyed and fastened to a damper shaft which rotates in maintenance free nylon bearings for
noiseless operation.
The Model MSR terminal unit is available with optional hot water reheat (Model HMSRW) or electric resistance heat
(Model HMSRE). The hot water coils are available in a 1 row or a 2 row configuration. The coils are constructed from 1/2
OD seamless copper tubes mechanically bonded to aluminum fins. The electric resistance heaters meet the requirement
of UL-1996 and National Electric Code (NEC) requirements.
Coils are provided with S & Drive connections on the inlet side and flange connections on the discharge. Standard heater
options include automatic primary thermal reset, manual secondary thermal reset, control line terminal blocks, magnetic
contactors or P/E switches as required by heater construction, 80-20 Ni-Ch heater element, and airflow proving switch
with probe.

Electric resistance duct heaters output a constant BTU as long as the heater is energized. Therefore, it is important to
maintain proper airflow at minimum required air velocities to prevent nuisance tripping and preclude premature heating
element failure due to over-temperature. The velocity in feet per minute (fpm) is determined by taking the volume of air
(cfm) divided by the duct area:
FPM = CFM/AREA

p a g e

19

OPTIONAL ELECTRIC RESISTANCE HEATER

MINIMUM AIR VELOCITIES

The minimum uniform airflow in a duct heater is directly
related to the inlet air temperature. Consideration must be
given to both the airflow across the heater and the inlet air
temperature.
To calculate the watts per square foot of duct area, divide
the total watts by the square footage of the duct area. Use
the adjacent chart to determine the minimum air velocity
in feet per minute (FPM) based on the inlet entering air
temperature.

notes:
1. label 1,2,3 and 4 are number of rows of heater coil.

Typical Extended Plenum Arrangement Codes

Maximum size and quantity of discharge outlets on units and or extended plenums is determined by following
calculations:
A) Find the desired round outlet diameter or the oval dimension h x w from the outlet dimension table below for your
required outlets.
B) Add 2 to the round diameter or oval dimension width.
C) Multiply the result by the number of outlets required on 1 surface.
D) The result must be less than or equal to the available unit length (side outlets) or width (end outlets). Available unit
length without extended plenum is found by subtracting 12 from the standard unit length. Available unit width is the
full unit width. If side outlets chosen exceed the dimensions allowed, an extended plenum is required. Extended plenums
are available in 1 foot increments to a maximum of 4 feet.
E) The outlet diameter or oval dimension height, plus 2 must be less than or equal to the unit height.
Note:
If unit has optional control panel, side outlets on unit control panel side is not allowed without extended plenum.
