A Study of the Localization of Folk Belief in

Taiwan:
The ritual for worshipping stars
CHANG Chia-lin
Professor, Dept. of Religious Studies, Aletheia University
Abstract
The local phenomena of religious ritual is a very important issue in
religious studies. This paper studies the ritual for worshipping stars in the
Taiwan Folk Belief in the seven temples, and then tries to understand the
syncretism that takes place when the ritual interacts with culture and the
mainstream value system in Taiwan.
The research shows that the content of the ritual for worshipping stars
evolved under the impact of liberalism, feminism, capitalism, popular
participation and the rise of new Buddhist groups. The ritual for
worshipping stars differs in the seven temples studied, perhaps owing to
their religious leaders. The more mainstream values are accepted, the more
changes to the ritual are found.

Keywords: the ritual for worshipping stars, Taiwanese folk beliefs,

localization, religious ritual, syncretism
