have had the pleasure of a lot of travel...a lot out of

the country... this conference cracked me up: It was
the World Women's Conference, same place I had another meeting... the first speaker from England stood
up: "At last year's conference we spoke about being
more assertive with our husbands. Well after the conference I went home and told my husband that I
would no longer cook for him and that he would have
to do it himself. After the first day I saw nothing. After
the second day I saw nothing. But after the third day
I saw that he had cooked a wonderful roast lamb."

last year's conference I went home and told my husband that I would no longer do his laundry and that
he would have to do it himself. After the first day I

Second Important Lesson - Pickup in the

Rain
One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older
African American woman was
standing on the side of an Alabama
highway trying to endure a lashing
rain storm. Her car had broken
down and she desperately needed a
ride.
Soaking wet, she decided to flag
down the next car.
A young white man stopped to
help her, generally unheard of in
those conflict-filled 1960's.
The man took her to safety,
helped her get assistance and put her into a
taxicab.
She seemed to be in a big hurry, but
wrote down his address and thanked him.
Seven days went by and a knock came on
the man's door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home.
A special note was attached.
It read: "Thank you so much for assisting
me on the highway the other night. The
rain drenched not only my clothes, but also
my spirits. Then you came along.
Because of you, I was able to make it to
my dying husband's' bedside just before he
passed away... God Bless you for helping
me and unselfishly serving others."

your horse/skateboarded/cycled by
or flown over Goldenwest Street
between Ellis and Garfield, you've
probably done a double-take as you
come upon one of the biggest U.S.
flags flying in Huntington Beach high
atop two gigantic palm trees on landscape contractor Ron Brindle's property (18851 Goldenwest Street).

flag can be seen from as far away as
Sea Cliff Village Shopping Center to
the south and the Huntington Beach
Equestrian Center to the North. More
than 20-foot wide and 30 foot long, it
was given to the parents of a deceased
serviceman, who donated it to a friend
of Brindle's, Jonny Zurba, owner of
Zurba Industries. He presented it to
Ron to fly high and proud. It's drawing
numerous comments from many people, who are thrilled by it and what it
represents.
"I love the flag and all that it's about
," said former U.S. Marine and current
Huntington Beach City Council member Erik Peterson. "People should display it with pride."
"It makes me glad to be an American," said Rosa Martinez, who stopped
to see it with her kids, Jose, 10, Maria,
12 and Joaquin, 14. "The flag has
meant so much to my family. Both my
father and grandfather were Army veterans, who fought overseas. It's the
symbol of our freedom. We should respect it and honor it."

salute them. When you see Old Glory,
stand straight and place your hand over
your heart. Do this because the flag represents you. You'll see it wave back--the
flags salute to you.
"I respect everyone who serves or
served in our military," said Brindle,
whose brother, Clarence, was in the
Army and fought in Korea.
"And especially those who have
made the ultimate sacrifice to help
keep us Free. It's a privilege to fly the
flag in their honor."
Brindle has a replica Statue of Liberty (below the flag on his property)
which lists all the Huntington Beach
servicemen who gave their lives in
World War II.

all its glory, and be proud to be an
American!

an increase in community outreach.

In his role with the Huntington
Beach Surf Lifesaving Association
(HBSLSA), he organized and collaborated with like-minded volunteers to provide community
outreach opportunities including
Marine Safety Pubic Education
booths at community events like
the Sunset Beach Community Association Halloween Event and
Autism Speaks Safety Fair at the
Downtown Surf City Nights. He
also organized lifeguard volunteer support for the Waves of
Valor event, HBPD International Youth Day, and played
an instrumental role in the organization and development of
the Surfers Awareness in Lifesaving Techniques program.

Interesting Bit of Legislative History McCarran Walter Act of 1952
Note: McCarran and Walter were Democrats. This act was created in 1952 and used by Carter in 1979 ...
he Presumptive Republican Presidential Candidate was recently severely criticized for suggesting that
the U.S. should limit or temporarily suspend the immigration of certain ethnic groups, nationalities, and
even people of certain religions. The criticisms condemned such a suggestion as, among other things,
being "Un-American," dumb, stupid, reckless, dangerous and racist. Congressmen and Senators swore that
they would never allow such legislation, and the president called such a prohibition on immigration unconstitutional.
As Gomer Pyle would say, "Surprise, Surprise !!!" It seems that the
selective immigration ban is already law and has been applied on several occasions. Known as the McCarran-Walter Act, the Immigration
and Nationality Act of 1952 allows for the "Suspension of entry or
imposition of restrictions by president. Whenever the president finds
that the entry of aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States
would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, the president may, by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as
immigrants or non immigrants or impose on the entry of aliens any
restrictions he may deem to be appropriate."
The act was utilized by Jimmy Carter, no less, in 1979 to keep
Iranians out of the United States, but he actually did more. He made
all Iranian students already here check in, and then he deported a
bunch. Seven thousand were found in violation of their visas,
15,000 Iranians were forced to leave the United States in 1979.

Residential EV Charging
Incentive Pilot Program
he South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) with

support from the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review
Committee (MSRC) has established a residential Electric Vehicle
(EV) charging incentive pilot program to offset Level 2 (240v) EV charger
hardware costs. This program is available to residents within the SCAQMDs
four-county jurisdiction.
The program provides an incentive to buy-down the cost of residential
chargers, which can typically range from $400-$800. The program will be
implemented on a first come, first served basis and will provide up to $250
for the cost of hardware for Level 2 residential chargers. An additional incentive of up to $250 will be available for low-income residents.
he City Attorneys Office will bring on a full-time Deputy Community Prosecutor in the coming weeks. This is a first of its kind. Historically, the City
Attorneys Office has handled Civil Litigation, Code Enforcement, contract
reviews, Ordinances and Resolutions, and other non-criminal matters. The Orange
County District Attorney has always handled all felony and misdemeanor arrests in
Huntington Beach for prosecution. This referral system to the OCDA is the practice
of nearly all cities in Orange County.
There are more than 5,000 arrests each year in Huntington Beach (80% of those
are misdemeanors), the passage of Prop 47 by the State has reclassified a number of
former felonies to misdemeanors, and a number of types of crimes are unique to
Huntington Beach and its downtown. Having the local (Huntington Beach City Attorney) ability to prosecute misdemeanors to support the prosecutorial effort of the
District Attorney will be a huge boon to enhancing public safety
in Huntington Beach.
City Attorney, Michael Gates, said "Although we have never
had a program like this in Huntington Beach, our City Charter
has always required local prosecutions like this. Supporting our
Police Officers who are making arrests downtown and in other
areas of Huntington Beach, by seeing prosecutions through to
the end, is a significant step in increasing public safety and a
prudent response to recent changes in circumstances like the
passage of Prop 47 and the States early release program."

Colin Kaepernicks refusal to stand

for the national anthem as a form of
protest against our countrys treatment of
black people has sparked outrage, sprinkled with a small dose of support. In this view, neither is justified.
In some circles, Kaepernick is being
compared to Muhammad Ali, which is
perhaps the greatest outrage in this entire
controversy. By sitting then kneeling for the anthem, Kaepernick forfeited none
of the guaranteed $73 million in his contract with the 49ers.
Ali, on the other hand, gave up everything when he refused to report for Army induction.
He was stripped of his
heavyweight title, lost his boxing license and
potentially forfeited his career. His act of
protest was a felony punishable by a fine of
up to $10,000 and five years in prison. After more than three years out of
the ring, he was spared incarceration when the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) overturned his conviction.
Despite any personal feelings about Kaepernicks refusal to stand for our
national anthem, he has every legal right to do so. SCOTUS has repeatedly
affirmed that the First Amendment guarantees the right to protest silently.
Theres a distinction between citizen rights and public (majority) preferences.
Which brings us to another debate: What does our nations flag stand
for? Like most things in a democracy, there is no unanimity on that issue.
For some, it symbolizes the sacrifices paid by millions of Americans. For
them, Kaepernick is disrespecting not only the flag, but our troops and our
country. For others, the flag denotes oppression and genocide. As one example, it was carried by our troops in battle when the avowed goal of our
government was to wipe out this countrys Native Americans.
Much of the criticism of Kaepernicks actions focuses on his protest taking place on the football field. Athletes should keep their activism on social issues off the field of play, the argument goes.
But that ignores the obvious. Kaepernicks celebrity status revolves around his ability to play football. How many people
would show up to hear Kaepernick give a speech on our nations oppression of people of color?
For many of us, its difficult to draw a connection between
sitting during the national anthem and protesting social or
racial injustice, any more than standing for the national anthem
amounts to an endorsement of such action. However, we
should never forget that among the most treasured gifts we
have in this country are the rights to think and protest as we
see fit.
As much as we may disagree with Kaepernick, we should give thanks
for his right to protest in the fashion he chooses. And while Kaepernick
sits for the national anthem, I will stand to demonstrate love for our country
despite its warts and imperfections, while doing what I can to make it better.

Russian Couple Adopted an Orphaned
Bear 23 Years Ago, and They Still Live Together
Meet Stepan, a domesticated bear who
lives with his humans Svetlana and Yuriy
Panteleenko in Moscow, Russia. The Panteleenkos adopted Stepan when he was just
a 3-month-old orphaned cub. He was found
by hunters in a forest all alone and in a very
bad condition, so Svetlana and Yuriy deThis couple adopted Stepan when he was a 3cided to give him a home.

Brownies
Ingredients:
1 cup King Arthur Unbleached
All-Purpose Flour or Measure
for Measure Gluten-Free Flour
3/4 cup natural cocoa, Dutchprocess cocoa, or Triple
Cocoa Blend
2 cups sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt*
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon espresso powder,
optional; for enhanced
chocolate flavor
3 large eggs
1/2 cup (8 tablespoons) butter, melted
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
*Increase the salt to 1/2 teaspoon if you use unsalted butter.
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 375F. Lightly grease a 9" x 13"
pan. Put all of the ingredients into a large bowl in the
order in which they're written. Stir, then beat the mixture until it's smooth. Spoon the batter into the prepared pan. Bake the brownies for 25 to 30 minutes,
or until they're just barely beginning to pull away
from the sides of the pan.
Remove the brownies from the oven; let them cool
completely before cutting. Store any leftovers, wellwrapped, at room temperature for 5 to 6 days. Freeze
for longer storage.

bent the strings when I played, which
nobody was really doing back
then, and he said
he was anxious
to go explain
what I was talking about to
George.

The Paul he
calmly refers to is
McCartney, and the
George is Harrison. Rillera, a Huntington
Beach
resident since the
early 1980s, is a legendary guitar
player but also a quiet and modest
man who doesnt wear his stories on
his sleeve.
But, oh, what a little digging produces.
It started in Santa Ana in the early
1950s, when he and his brothers put
together what is considered to be Orange Countys first rock n roll band.
The Rhythm Rockers, as they were

known, were influenced by everything
they heard around them music
played by their father, on the radio, in
back rooms and at
dance halls. The
brothers absorbed
it and spun it into
their own early
brand of rootsy
Southern California rock n roll.
Blending soul,
rhythm
and
Latin,
blues,
jazz and more,
the
Rhythm
Rockers were
at once the
countys most
innovative and
flexible band, able to play any kind of
party or concert and please the crowd.
One night at the old Harmony Park
Ballroom in Anaheim, R&B singer
Richard Berry asked Rillera about a
song the band was playing, El Loco
Cha Cha by Rene Touzet.
Berry, who was singing with the
Rhythm Rockers that night, was writing a song, and inspired by the infectious and simple rhythm of El Loco,
he finished it backstage that night

while waiting to go on. He would soon
record a version of his song, but not
until another band, the Kingsman,
covered it would much of the world
become aware of Louie, Louie.
The stories just go on and on. Rillera
and his brothers would soon become
part of the Righteous Brothers phenomenon, playing the music behind
the blue-eyed soul of Bill Medley and
the late Bobby Hatfield. The Righteous Brothers were booked on the
Beatles first big tour of the United
States in 1964, which is how Rillera
ended up on the plane with the Fab
Four.
That tour was a real experience for
all of us, Rillera told me. Oftentimes, the kids in the audience were
not aware that there were any opening
acts before the Beatles. And so during
many of our shows, all we could hear
were kids screaming for John, Paul,
George and Ringo.
And then there was that guitar
sound that Rillera achieved, bending

his notes by pushing up on the strings.
In many of the arenas where we
played, the Beatles could sit backstage
and hear our set through a little
speaker in their dressing room. I guess
they liked the sound of my guitar that
they would hear each night, and thats
why Paul tracked me down on the
plane. A few years later when I heard
that beautiful George Harrison song,
While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and
I heard him bending those strings, I remember smiling.
Thankfully, we can all still enjoy
Rilleras music in Huntington Beach.
He and his group perform occasionally at Harveys Steakhouse, 6060
Warner Ave. The repertoire today includes all kinds of classic rock, plus a
few surprises.
When you see Rillera play, just
know youre watching an honest-togoodness musical legend, whether or
not he cares to admit it.

Light gold color. An almost Sauvignon Blanc-like element of grapefruit and cut grass on the nose, and I get some
lime and a salty/chalky quality. Bright acidity on the palate
with a medium-body and a slight rounded feel. An interesting mix of grapefruit and lime with bruised apple, almond
and caramel. Notes of salt and flowers on the finish. A bit
simple, but a pleasantly different style Chardonnay, one
with a foot in both camps. 12.5% alcohol, this sees some
time in 20% new French oak, no maloactic fermentation.

tobacco, roasted red pepper, eucalyptus and charcoal notes.

Pale straw color. Bursting aromas of lime, white peach
and pineapple nice kick of nettle and honeysuckle with
some sliced cucumbers and lemongrass notes. Crisp acidity
keeps the lips smacking with this medium-bodied wine.
Lime and lemon peel, tangerine, papaya so much fruit

and its all bright and crunchy. A bit of chalky minerality to
this wine that is quite attractive. The white pepper, cucumber and sliced jalapeno notes are woven in well to the package, and no high-octane grassiness here. From Ucuquer

sense of pine forest and rich soil. Medium-bodied palate
with light grip from the tannins, medium acidity keeps it
quite fresh. Fruit flavors: plum skin, blackberry, blueberry,
deep and saucy fruit. Notes of sweet
basil and wet leaves, some coffee and
vanilla accents too. Structured but accessible stuff with lots of flavor and
deliciousness. Good Carmenere for

Deep ruby color. Aromas of smoky meat on top of
crunchy plums and currants, and I get some tobacco and
earth, too. Fleshy but tart approach with dusty tannic structure and bright acidity. Tart plums, spiced cranberry sauce,
the fruit mixes nicely with non-fruit complexity: smoke, tar,
tobacco, grilled herbs. Very nice now but likely even better
in two or three years. A pleasant rusticity but this is not a
simple wine. Sangiovese with 10% Cabernet Franc and 3%
Merlot. This spends 12-16 months in old oak and then aged
in concrete until bottling. (88 points IJB)

it vibrant. Tart red and black currant along with lots of
crunchy, juicy plums. Loaded with tobacco, sage, pepper,
lots of complex earthy elements. Cedar and roasted coffee
woven in very well. Elegant despite significant concentration. Long life ahead. A blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot,
Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Alicante and
Syrah. Aged 18 months in 35% new French oak. (91 points

Light gold color. A bright and floral-driven wine (dandelion, honeysuckle, nettle) with some lemon-lime and apricot. Medium-bodied with a slightly creamy mouthfeel and
some moderating acidity. Pear, lime and apricot mix with
notes of honey, nettle and sea salt. A plump texture but nice
cut and vibrancy to the wine. Not the most complex wine
but good stuff for the money. A blend of 60% Grenache
Blanc and 40% Clairette. (86 points IJB)

Huntington Beach company has reached an agreement to
sell its high-tech, environmentally-friendly insulated drink
tumblers at Target.
Takeya USA, which was established in 2009 makes reusable
drink bottles and food-storage
items. According to its website,
the company focuses on helping
people make healthy and sustainable beverage delivery choices.
The company has 30 employees.
Its parent company, Takeya
Japan, has been in business for
55 years.
The American company's
newest product, the ThermoTumbler, which will be available at
Target in 20-ounce and 30-ounce
sizes and in five colors, will cost
less than $30. It will join other
Takeya products already on the

shelf, such as the Flash Chill Iced
Tea Maker.
The tumbler is made from
stainless steel, has a sweat-free
double wall design and shatterproof sip lid, and according to the
company will keep drinks cold
for 24 hours or hot for 12 hours.
People are excited when they
put ice in there and see its still
there the next day, Chief Executive John Lown told the Orange
County Register. People are surprised it works. Its really growing rapidly. Were growing as a

Mortgage Rates Flatline

rates? Bottom line: not much. Mortgage rates have hardly moved in the
last few months. The average on the 30 year
fixed mortgage remains at 3.44% in September
compared to 3.42% in July. Hawkish comments from Fed
Chair Janet Yellen
and other Fed
members wasnt
enough to move
rates higher, and
an underperforming August jobs
report was not
enough to move
the needle any
lower.
In the end,
mortgage applications are up just
0.9%. In other
words, no change.
Yet rates remain
historically low.
The
all-time
record low recorded by Freddie Mac was
3.31% in November 2012. With mortgage rates
still within 0.13% of the all-time record lows,
why arent more people taking advantage of
the opportunities to save money every month

on their mortgage? The wait and see mentality has taken over.
Since there is no all-seeing crystal ball that
will tell us when rates will move, whether
theyll go up or down and by how much,
homeowners
tend to base
their actions
and decisions
on
market
movement.
When rates
move lower,
there is a segment of the
population
that
react
quickly
to
seize a new
opportunity.
Perhaps its
greed that propels them to
take that opportunity as
soon as it becomes available. Or maybe thats
just called financial prudence. Perhaps its fear
that what is available today may not be available tomorrow. Either way, these individuals
feel that procrastinating is not in their best interest.

There is another segment of the population
that reacts when rates move up. These individuals waited on the sidelines when rates
dropped thinking they might continue to go
lower. Their hope was to catch it at the bottom. While the initial opportunity may have
been great, they were afraid that if they jumped
in too early they might miss out on an even better opportunity. When rates start to move up,
they realize the bottom they were looking for
passed and any further procrastination will not
be to their benefit.
The problem comes in to play when rates
dont change. In a flat environment, the catalyst for movement isnt there. Many homeowners get lulled into doing nothing. And thats
where weve been for the last few months at
a flatline.
Of course, the wait and see mentality does
nothing to diminish the opportunity that is
available for these homeowners, it only diminishes the percentage of them that actually seize
that opportunity and grab it by the forelock.
And in the end, with mortgage rates staying
within 0.13% of the all-time record lows, the
reality is that homeowners have potentially
more to lose by waiting than they would have
to gain.
