What is casing?
Introduction
The well is therefore drilled in sections, with each
section of the well being sealed off by lining the inside of
the wellbore with steel pipe (known as casing) and
filling the annular space between this casing string and
the borehole with cement, before drilling the subsequent
hole section. Watt, Heriot
Casing Functions
To prevent unstable borehole from caving in.
To protect weak formations from the high mud
Casing Types
Drive pipe or Conductor pipe
Surface Casing
Intermediate Casing
Production Casing

Retrievable System
Drilling assembly:
Locked to casing
Extends below casing shoe
Capable of multiple runs
Often retrieved with braided cable
Reliability is critical
