Devotee: It is the appearance day of Kas manifestation as
Jaganntha.
r rmad Gour Govinda Swami: Yes. Jaganntha manifested
on this day. Jaganntha, Baladeva and Subhadra appeared in
Their forms today, as three logs of wood. This is mentioned
in the Skanda Pura. Therefore on this day They are given a
public bath. After the bathing festival, Lord Jaganntha retires
from public darana and is repainted. Fifteen days later, He gives
darana in His freshly painted and young appearance, known as
nava-yauvana vea, during the cart festival (Ratha-ytr). Thus
Ratha-ytr will take place fifteen days from today.
Today we should offer these prayers to Lord Jaganntha from
the Skanda Pura and beg for His mercy. So I will recite Lord
Jagannthas prayer, prama. You will all repeat it and receive
the mercy of Jaganntha.

Vraja-Ll is Intoxicating
Wanting to know the reason why Ka was sometimes
uttering, rdhe, rdhe, gop, gop!, the queens went to Rohi
Mt and asked, Mother, please tell us why Ka is always
acting like this? We are taking care of Him so nicely.
Mother Rohi replied, Oh, vraja-ll is such a sweet,
mdhurya-may-ll. It is nectarean and intoxicating. How can
I describe it? It is such an attractive ll, that if I speak about it,
even Ka and Balarma will be attracted.
Please tell us about it. We have no access to it, and we are
not able to go there, but at least we can hear about it. We cannot
take part in the rsa dance, we are also deprived of that. In this
way they requested Mother Rohi to speak. Rohi agreed and
said, All right.

Nradas Request
r Nrada Muni from a distance saw these three ecstatic
forms, mah-bhva-praka, of Jaganntha, Baladeva and
Subhadr. As Nrada approached Them, though, those ecstatic
forms vanished, and Their natural appearance came back.
Nrada said, I saw these forms! I already saw them! I desire
that these forms appear again and be worshipped. Nrada
was referring to Jaganntha, Balabhadra and Subhadr in that
ecstatic form and this was his request.
11
Snna-Ytr
r Jaganntha Mah-Bhva-Praka
Nrada said, I will do this, but there is one danger. What is
that? they asked. As soon as Ka regains His consciousness,
and wakes up, He will get up and start running to Vrajabhmi.
We should let Druka, Kas charioteer, know this. Tell him
that Ka will certainly start running as soon as He wakes up,
so he should have the chariot ready.
Uddhavas Apprehension
Uddhava thought very deeply and said, You are right, but
from what I understand the vraja-gops, especially Rdhr,
are feeling acute pangs of separation from Ka, and their
condition now in Vrajabhmi is very grave. They are all in a
dying condition and they are very, very weak. If Ka goes
there and sees them in that condition, I dont think He will be
able to tolerate it. The condition there will be so precarious that
I am worried we will not be able to get Ka back here.
Nrada said, O Uddhava, you are Kas messenger, dta.
Ka sent you to Vrajabhmi carrying His message of love.
Therefore I think that you should go ahead to Vrajabhmi and
inform all Vrajavss that Ka is coming from Dvrak, that He
has just started His journey, and will reach Vrajabhmi soon.
Hearing this Uddhava became morose and said, Nradaj,
whatever you say I accept, because you are a most elevated
person. I have no objection, but I do have one apprehension.
What is that?
You might already know that when Ka sent me from
Mthura to bring His message of love to the Vrajavss, I went
to Vrajabhmiand stayed there for three months. I went to
console them, but what consolation was I able to give them?
The Vrajavss were feeling acute pangs of separation from
13
Snna-Ytr
Ka and were always crying for Him. If someone is crying, his
friends will come and ask, Why are you crying? He may tell
them, Oh, my wife died. We may console him and say, That
is natural, your wife died. Everything in the material world is
temporary, so why are you crying, and lamenting? However,
what consolation was I able to give the Vrajavss? How could
I tell them, Dont cry for Ka? That would have been a great
apardha, offence, on my part.
Our relationship with Ka is perfect, loving and eternal,
it is not a temporary or material relationship. When a material
relationship breaks down, we can offer solace, but what
consolation could I give the Vrajavss? How could I say Dont
cry? Rather my heart told meto tell them, Cry more! Cry more!
Cry more!
This is what Mahprabhu taught. If you want to cry, cry for
Ka. In this mood, Mahprabhu, was crying for Ka. He was
in rdh-bhva, feeling acute pangs of separation from Ka.
Uddhava continued, So I could not do anything. I said, All
right, all right, I am going back. I will tell Ka everything
and request Him to go to Vraja immediately. I gave them my
word, but Ka has not yet returned there. If I go there again
and tell them that Ka is coming, they will not believe me;
rather they will call me a liar! You told us you would send
Ka immediately. Ka never came, and now you are saying
again that He will come? They will chastise me and call me bad
names. So how can I go?
14
r Jaganntha Mah-Bhva-Praka
15
Snna-Ytr
r Jaganntha Mah-Bhva-Praka
Subhadrs chariot, and Jagannthas chariot is the last to leave.
Balarma said, Ill go with My sister, Subhadr. The three
chariots were decorated very nicely. Uddhava and Nrada said,
You two, brother and sister, Baladeva and Subhadr should
both already go. We will make arrangements to send Ka,
after You leave. We make that promise to You.
Snna-Ytr
both here? Then Uddhava and Nrada told Him: Our Lord,
please go to Vraja. We have already prepared Your ratha, chariot.
Please come and sit down.
Ka is always thinking of Rdhr. He drank the mellow
of radha-prema, rdh-prema-rasa, so He appeared like a mad
man, as if He is intoxicated with liquor. Both Nrada and
Uddhava helped this mtla, mad man, Ka, into the ratha.
He was so mad and kept repeating O rdhe, rdhe! In this
condition He sat in the ratha. Then Nrada and Uddhava told
Druka the charioteer to drive the ratha as fast as he could
toward Vrajabhmi.
Mah-Bhva-Praka
In the meantime Subhadr and Baladeva had already reached
Vrajabhmi on Their chariots, and Kas ratha was following
Them. This is Rathaytr. Just by thinking of Vrajabhmi,
Balarma became ecstatic. His hands and legs shrunk, and His
eyes dilated. That is mah-bhva-praka, where His internal
mood is externally visible. The internal mood, that bhava,
visibly changes the external form, because in the Lord there is
no difference between deha [the body] and deh [the embodied
soul]. For a conditioned soul deha and deh is different, but
Balarmas deha and deh is not different; what is inside, also
manifests externally.
So Balarma manifested this ecstatic mah-bhva form, with
His eyes dilated and His hands and legs shrunken. Subhadr
was in that same condition and displayed the same symptoms.
Thus She was not able to go to Mother Yaod because of Her
ecstatic state. While thinking of Vrajabhmi They developed
that bhva. This vraja-bhva, vrajara-mdhurma, the sweetness
18
r Jaganntha Mah-Bhva-Praka
of Vrajabhmi, is vast like an ocean, and Balarma and Subhadr
were drowning in that ocean of mdhurya. This bhva is known
as mah-bhva-praka.
Snna-Ytr
I have had the opportunity to get some dust from Your feet, O
Rdhe! My life has become successful today, as I obtained some
dust from Your feet and put it on my head.
Only in order to relish paraky-rasa, paramour love, Ka
has manifested this ll. No one can conceive of it. This is vrajall, paraky-rasa-ll. All the gops and Rdhr are in reality
the wives of Ka, but in Vrajabhmi they appear to be married
to other men and so Ka relishes their love as His paramours.
Then Ayana Ghosh said, Kas desire is to relish parakyrasa, paramour love. Your real husband is Ka and You are His
wife. You are eternally husband and wife, but to fulfill Kas
desire to relish paraky-rasa, Paurams ordered Vnda-dev
to perform our marriage ceremony. This is only external; it is
not real. Ka is Your real husband and You are His wife. You
are the goddess of my heart. I married the chy, the shadow of
Rdhr, not the real Rdhr. Now that You are in a dying
condition, what will happen to us?
Having spoken in this way, he cried out, Today, let
everyone know that I have married chy-Rdh! When
Rvaa kidnapped St, he did not kidnap the real St, but
he kidnapped chy-st, my-st, an illusory St. Similarly,
Ayana Ghosh married chy-rdh, not the real Rdh. Rdh
is the real wife of Ka and Ka is Her real husband, rdhknta, rdhntha.
Kuilas Pride
Then Kuila, Ayana Ghoshs sister, came. She is the so-called
sister-in-law of Rdhr. While shedding tears, Kuila put
her head on the lotus feet of Rdhr. She took some dust
from Rdhs lotus feet and put it on her head. Married ladies
20
r Jaganntha Mah-Bhva-Praka
who are not widowed put vermilion on the parting of their hair,
inthi. So Kuila put some dust from the lotus feet of Rdh as
vermilion on that inthi.
With a choked voice Kuila said, O Rdhe, I am very
fortunate because I am able to put some dust from Your lotus
feet on my inthi. I really became sat, a chaste lady today. I had
such great pride, as great as a skyscraper, ka-cumbi. I was
always proclaiming, I am the only chaste lady. There are no
other chaste ladies in Vrajabhmi. All others are prostitutes. I
used to say that and I have tried my best to prove that You were
a great prostitute and that You have no chastity at all. Although
You married my brother, You were always running to Ka. You
were going to that Ka, disregarding Your husband. Therefore
I tried my best to prove that You were unchaste and that I was
the most chaste lady. I had that great pride, but Rdhe, You are
all-worshipable! Ka is the only husband of all the women in
the world, sarva hi pati.
Sannysa Fever
Then Kuila started narrating one story, Once a very
mysterious thing happened. One day Ka manifested a jvarall, as if He was very sick with a high fever. Ka was overcome
with a disease, sannysa roga. I will give up everything and take
up sannysa. This fever had come, and everyone was worried,
thinking, How can it be cured? What is the medicine for You?
Ka then replied, Oh yes. I know a medicine.
What is that medicine?
Only sat-sdhv, a lady who is very chaste and pure, can supply
the medicine. She should go to the Yamun with a pot that has
hundreds of holes. If she can bring water from the river in that
21
Snna-Ytr
pot, and does not spill a single drop of water, then that is the
medicine. If you put that on My body then I will be cured of
this fever.
Kuila continued, Everyone decided that I was the most
chaste lady. I was always so proud, proclaiming, I am the most
chaste lady and everyone else is unchaste. So the Vrajavss
said, Call Kuila and give her that pot with hundreds of holes.
Let her bring water from the Yamun without spilling a drop.
However, when I tried to do it, all the water poured out, which
proved that I was not chaste at all.
Kuila admitted, Thereby it was proved, and my pride was
completely crushed. That is why Ka manifested such a jvarall, to crush my pride. Then Rdhr was called. Give that pot
to Rdhr, and let Her bring water. When Rdhr went
to the Yamun to fetch water, although the pot had hundreds of
holes, not a single drop fell out.
Kutila thus spoke to r Rdh, So it was proved to the whole
world that You are the real chaste lady, not me. Yogamy had
created that ll in order to crush my pride. Today, though, I am
very happy just to have the opportunity to take some dust from
Your lotus feet, Oh Rdhe. My life has become successful.
r Jaganntha Mah-Bhva-Praka
In Vraja, everyone condemns Rdhr. In response to
this, She says, ko v na yti yamun pulina vane rdh nme
kalakapavada, Who is not going to the Yamun to fetch
water? But if I go, then I become a prostitute. Everyone would
say, Oh, She is a prostitute. On the plea of fetching water She
went to the Yamun only to mix with Ka.
They accused Rdhr in this way, but Candrval said,
No, I am condemned. You are not condemned; O Rdhe, r
Ka is Your real husband. You are a leftist, so sometimes
Ka goes to my kuja just to increase Your leftist mood. That
is my good fortune. In that way I am related to You. Today I
am very fortunate that I could put my head at Your lotus feet,
O Rdhr. Though I am very eager to fulfil the desires of
Ka, still I am most distressed and condemned. I have become
a cause of taking Ka away from You. Ka is Your husband.
Sometimes Ka comes to my kuja, but He is not happy with
me. He is only happy with You. Even in His dreams, He only
thinks of You. He never thinks of me.
It is said that while Ka is with Candrval, He thinks only
of Rdh and as such He never gets the pleasure or happiness
when He is with her that He gets when with Rdhr.
Candrval said, This is all ll created by Yogamy.
Yogamy has made everyone dance here in Vrajabhmi, and
for the pleasure of Ka, in whatever way she made us dance,
we all danced. I know it very well. Everyone here is engaged
in nourishing the ll of Ka and nothing else. Today I heard
that You were about to die. If You give up Your body then no
one in this Vrajabhmi will survive, O Rdhe, not even a single
animal. Everyone will die, and then Ka will never come to
Vrajabhmi. We will never see Ka again. Please dont die.
23
Snna-Ytr
r Jaganntha Mah-Bhva-Praka
the pangs of separation She had felt completely disappeared.
Ka was still unconscious in this tortoise-like form. Seeing
Ka in this condition, rmati Rdhika told Her priya-sakh,
Vikh, Please help Ka. Vikh knows what medicine
to apply. In a very sweet voice she started to chant rdhe,
rdhe, rdhe in Kas ears. Hearing this, Ka regained His
consciousness and opened His eyes. Ka looked at Rdhr
and Rdhr looked at ymasundara, Ka, in eye-to-eye
union. Then everyone forgot their previous condition. Where is
Dvrka? Where are Kas pangs of separation? And where is
rmati Rdhrs viraha? All of these were now gone. This is
the union of Rdh and Ka in Nidhuvana-kuja.
Nidhuvana-kuja is where nia-ll, the night pastimes of
Rdh and Ka, take place. So the sakhs arranged a nice bed
for Rdh and Ka to spend the night together. When the
brahma-muhrta came, a cuckoo bird produced a very sweet
sound, cooh! cooh! indicating that dawn had come. Wake
up! Rdh and Ka, get up! The Divine Couple awoke.
Ka was standing in His ymasundara tri-bhaga form, bent
in three-places. He was dressed in a yellow dhoti and had a
peacock feather in His hair. Ka was playing sweet sounds
on His flute, and on His left side was Rdhr, dressed in
a blue sari. Lalit-sundar was offering paca-pradpa rati.
Vikh was singing nice krtana of the union of Rdh and
Ka, yugala-mahim krtana. Some other sakhs were playing
mdga, some karatla, and others were playing the v, while
magala-rati was going on. It was such a beautiful, nectarean
union after Their separation. Ka cast a glance at Rdhr,
and Rdhr drank the sweet honey coming from the lotuslike face of Ka through Her eyes.
Then, both of Them sat down on an effulgent jewelled throne,
dvyaratna-sihsana. Vikh started krtana. All the narma25
Snna-Ytr
sakhs came, and joined her. All their pangs of separation were
gone. Now there is milana union, after viraha separation.
After the union there will again be viraha. Union after viraha,
and again viraha after union. This is such a nice wonderful
mdhurya-may ll in Vrajabhmi.
A Form Assumed
to Drown in the Ocean of Rdhs Love
Ka is a very crooked person. Ka was looking at the
lotus-like face of Rdhr. He was casting a glance in a
crooked way, whereby He was shooting madana, Cupids
arrow, to pierce the heart of Rdhr. At the same time Ka
relishes, the madhu, honey emanating from the lotus-like face
of Rdh. There is honey in a lotus flower. While Rdh and
Ka were both sitting on a transcendental golden throne,
divya-rngaana, Ka said, O Rdhe! In tattva there is no
separation between Yourself and Myself. Where is separation?
There is no separation. In order to show Your vamya-bhva,
leftist mood, and raise it to the highest level, I create such ll,
such separation. You are always with Me, and I am always with
You, because Your love for Me is pure love. Rdhe, Your love
for Me is like an unlimited ocean and I want to drown in that
ocean and enter into the core of Your heart. In order to reach
that deep ocean and to drown in it, I have assumed the form of
Jaganntha. In this form I will eternally stay in r-ketra.
r Jaganntha Mah-Bhva-Praka
wood, He is floating in the ocean of rdh-bhva, which is in the
heart of Rdhr. In order to do that I remain in Jaganntha
Pur Dhma, Nlcala-ketra, in this tortoise-like form with big
eyes, and My hands and legs shrunken.
That is the form of Jaganntha, rdh-viraha-vidhura-rpa,
feeling pangs of separation from Rdh, Ka becoming so
ecstatic, in mah-bhva, and drowning in the rdh-prema
sgara.
Ka also told Rdh Assuming Your sentiment and
complexion, I will also stay in that Pur Ketra in the form of
r Ka Caitanya. Whereas Jaganntha is Ka feeling pangs
of separation from Rdh, rdh-viraha vidhura. Lord Caitanya
is Ka feeling acute pangs of separation from Ka, kaviraha vidhura. Rdh-viraha vidhura and ka-viraha vidhura
are both there in Pur. Why did Mahprabhu go there after
taking sannysa? Mahprabhu is in rdh-bhva, He is always
crying for Ka. He is in the same mood as Rdhr, suffering
great feelings of separation from Ka in rdh-bhva.
Vipralambha-Ketra
Jaganntha is crying for Rdh, and Mahprabhu is crying for
Ka in Jaganntha Pur-ketra. When They meeteach other
there They see, O, My pra-vallabha. Jaganntha showed His
ymasundara form to Caitanya Mahprabhu because He is in
rdh-bhva. Jaganntha is rdh-viraha vidhura and Caitanya is
ka-viraha vidhur. Both viraha-vidhuras are there. Therefore
Jaganntha Ketra is vipralambha-ketra, because of that mood
of feeling pangs of separation. Ka said, I will appear there in
the form of Jaganntha, feeling pangs from Rdh, and I will also
be there in the form of Mahprabhu, and accept Your mood, O
27
Snna-Ytr
Rdhr, with Your complexion, feeling pangs of separation
from Ka. I will take My brother Balarma and sister Subhadr
with Me, because They helped Me in this meeting in Vrajabhmi.
Therefore I will appear in this form with My brother Balarma
and My sister Subhadr.
r Jaganntha Mah-Bhva-Praka
opportunity to relish it. All of you vraja-gops and gopas will
be present in male forms and take part in My caitanya-ll as
My associates. Rya Rmananda is Vikh-sakh, and Svarpa
Dmodara Gosvm is Lalit-sakh. In this way I will perform
My ll in Jaganntha Pur-dhma.
Why does Jaganntha appear in this form, and how is it? Why
did Mahprabhu take sannysa? Why did He stay there? Why
are They both in Jaganntha Pur-dhma? What is the reason
behind it? Mahprabhu is ka-viraha-vidhura, and Jaganntha
is rdh-viraha-vidhura. Jaganntha is crying for Rdh, and
Mahprabhu is crying for Ka, and They meet each other.
Therefore Mahprabhu went and stayed there in Jaganntha
Ketra, which is vipralambha-ketra. Thus they are both feeling
pangs of separation, vipralambha, viraha, in vipralambha-ketra.
Thank you very much.
Hare Ka! Jaya Jaganntha! Jaya Mahprabhu!
29
Snna-Ytr
Whatever lls Ka performs in Gokula, Mthura
and Dvrak, He also performs in Nlcala-ketra. That is
mentioned in Vaiava-tantra. Why did Mahprabhu stay there
after taking sannysa? He is there because it is vipralambhaketra. Mahprabhu is ka-viraha-vidhura, Jaganntha is
rdh-viraha-vidhura and They meet each other. Mahprabhu
is crying for Ka, and Jaganntha is crying for Rdh. When
Jaganntha sees Mahprabhu, O Rdh! My dear wife! When
Mahprabhu sees Jaganntha and Jaganntha shows Him His
beautiful ymasundara form, Mahprabhu says, O My pravallabha! Lord of My life! So, They meet each other there.
Come, and visit Jaganntha-ketra!
Devotee: Is Lord Nitynanda playing a special role?
r rmad Gour Govinda Swami: Yes. Nitynanda is Balarma.
Jaganntha says, I am taking My brother and sister and I will

r rmad Gour Govinda Swami: Yes.

The spiritual master is very dear, because he is expert
in assisting the gops, who at different times make different tasteful arrangements for the perfection of Rdh and
Kas conjugal loving affairs within the groves of Vndvana. I offer my most humble obeisances unto the lotus feet
of such a spiritual master. (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura
Sri Gurvastakam, verse 6).
Guru is a very dear girl-companion of Rdh, he is rdhpriya-sakh. The other face of guru is the manifestation of
Nitynanda Rma. Baladeva has a plough in His hand and Ka
has a flute. Why do Ka and Balarma have a plough and a
flute? A plough is used for ploughing, deep cultivation of the
ketra, the field, to take out the weedsand throw them away.
When a barren field is fertile, then the bhakti-lat-bja will be
sown. Baladevas plough is the first requirement for cultivation.
There is karaa and akaraa. Karaa means cultivation,
and then comes akaraa, attraction. Then Kas flute will
attract you. Otherwise, if it is not properly cultivated, Kas
flute cannot attract you. Both karaa and akaraa, Ka and
Balarma, plough and flute, are needed.
