Perceive the Art of Life: Recipe for an Artist
(This article has been written for Jody Hudson, for his personal blog.)

Be insouciant with a smile. Laugh on purpose. Lie in the dark field and watch comets. Look
danger in the eye with unwavering mirth. Wink, flirt, kiss and admire romance and beauty in
others. Feel the grass, the wind, the sun and the emotions of all.
Laugh at Dream Stealers as you would a puppy attack. Play with them and tumble them with a
flick of your toe. Make notes of your good dreams and forget the bad ones. Create images in
the clouds, in your own mind and in the minds of others; illusion begins reality. Take bubble
bath showers in the warm summer rain or a full moon, sometimes with a friend. Walk the
beach.
Remember: it is your imagination that controls the future and you that control your
imagination. Believe in magic, especially your own. Play with children and direct their future in
the direction they wish to thrive into. Listen to old people then make your own decisions. Never
throw your dreams away for they may save your life some day. Visualize excellence, yours and
those you love.
Be always interested in others, as interest and attention are of the greatest value to all beings,
based on scarcity alone! If you would pay a compliment to another, pay attention. Being
interested is in all ways senior to being interesting. Exchange in abundance, give far more than
you get. Give most of all your own personal interest in another, with rapt and penetrating
attention in a loving way.
The body and swords will weaken and rust. The pike and mind will dull and bend. The will and
spirit may remain most powerful, no matter how dire and overwhelming the adversity.
Therefore, retain your integrity, hold your position when you know you are right. Your spiritual
well-being supersedes the value of your physical well being. Some wait until they are on the
deathbed to realize these things! You can realize them now if you want to. Enjoy. Do well.
Flourish. Prosper. Help others first and yourself last. It's like table manners in life!

Part Three : Business

Terms Used in the Stock Photography Business
(This article has been written for Matthew Johnson, for his stock photo blog.)

So you are a small business person or web designer and you want to purchase some stock
photography for your website. Great. Photography is a wonderful way to improve the
emotional impact of your site. But there are a few terms unique to the stock photography
business that you should know.
Royalty Free - you'll see this term often. What it means is that you pay a one time fee for an
image and you can use it for as many times as you want for as long as you wish. It is a great way
to get inexpensive photos. Now if you are concerned that your competitor would or could use
the same image as you, photographers and agencies can continue to sell the image after you
purchase it, then you need:
Rights Managed - this one is next term you'll see. This means that you pay a fee for the image
based on how, where, how long, and how many people will see the image. This one will cost
you a lot more in most cases. This is worth it if you do not want your competitor using the same
image for the same purpose. Usually the stock agency or photographer also agree not to sell
the image to others in your field for the time that you are using the image. So you can see why
this option protects your use of the image but you'll also pay much more for this protection.
Remember too that, at some point, you decided to discontinue using/paying for the image the
agency or photographer can then sell the image to someone else, even someone in your field.
Flat Rate - this term isn't quite at common but it is similar to royalty free. Usually this means
that you pay a onetime fee for an image, but it can only be used for one purpose by one
person. Pricing will be higher than royalty free but less than rights managed.
Copyright - even with royalty free you are still only purchasing the right to use an image not the
image itself. All images are property of the agency or photographer who owns them. How do
you know who owns them, there is usually a symbol with date and name of the person or
agency who owns the image. No matter what you paid for the image you are NOT the owner of
the image. This means you cannot remove the copyright information, alter the photo, use it as
part of a logo that you own a copyright, or resale the image as your own.
These terms will get you started but remember there can be differences in these definitions
from agency to agency and photographer to photographer. Every agency and photographer
selling stock images should have a legal or license page to explain these terms and any others
that they use, if they don't you may want to move onto another site. Be aware, read all the
information, and know what you are buying.

Part Four: Cancer

Symptoms of Breast Cancer in women under 30
(This article has been written for Renee Reeves, for her lifestyle blog.)

Breast cancer is one of the leading health concerns among women in the modern world. As we
all know, cancer is a condition where the cells in the body start multiplying at a rapid rate even
though they are not required. Such multiplication leads to a deficiency of resources for other
parts of the body.
When such cells form, they start collecting into lumps. These lumps are what we know as
tumors or cancer formations. Such lumps in the breast can be very serious in terms of health
and well being. Breast cancer affects as many 5 percent of women worldwide.
Symptoms
Race, weight, family history etc. are all contributing factors towards this problem. This disease
is most common in women over the age of 45 or women who have already undergone
menopause. It is less common in younger women under the age of 30, but it is not unheard of.
The tricky part about breast cancer in younger women is that it is not detected easily.
A young womans breasts are firmer and denser in terms of muscles and tissue. This is why a
normal self- examination may not be very helpful in detecting a lump or tumor. This disease is
very difficult to cure in the advanced stages. It is also possible that a tumor may be mistaken for
fibrocystic breast condition or a normal cyst and lead to delay in treatment.
Lumps or Formations
Breast cancer can be effectively detected through a self examination done once a month. You
must consult a doctor if you notice a lump in the breasts or the underarms that was not there
before. This lump will be hard and irregular in shape. It may also be mobile i.e. it will move
when pressure is applied.
Bumpy Skin
Many women also notice that the surface of the skin becomes bumpy in appearance. It looks
like accumulation of cellulite. This could be a sign that small collections of cells are present
under the skin. In case of a large tumor, the outline may even be visible through the surface of
the skin.
In a few cases, the patient could also suffer from pain in the breast. This pain is usually dull and
intermittent. This is also accompanied by tenderness and sensitivity to touch.
7

Change in Nipples
The nipples are the most visible parts of the breasts and they are also the first area to show
symptoms of breast cancer. In most cases, there is a dramatic change in the appearance of the
nipples and the areolas (the dark ring surrounding the nipples).
The nipples may become flat or collapse inwards. Some women also notice that the color
becomes much darker. There may also be mottling around the nipples leading to a very
unpleasant appearance.
Discharge
As the disease progresses, different parts like the milk ducts start getting affected. This is why
excretion of discharge from the nipples is very common in breast cancer. This discharge is
usually very watery and white. It looks similar to normal breast milk.

(This article has been written for Viet Le, for his business website.)

At Sno Block Distributor, we are proudly introducing a whole new mouth licking food category

Dessert loving customers always look for a new and different taste. Shaved snow is yummy for
the tummy and pleasing for the eyes! And it definitely will amaze dessert lovers with its unique
taste. After shaved ice, frozen yogurt and bubble tea, Shaved Snow could be the next hype in
the North American dessert market. At Sno Block Distributor, we make the blocks with fresh
ingredients. Shaved Snow contains ultra low calories, even lower than yogurt!
What is Shaved Snow
It is soft; it is smooth, and it melts in your mouth. Just imagine flavored snowflakes melting in
your mouth! Dont mess it with shaved ice or frozen yogurt. The difference between a shaved
snow and shaved ice is that shaved snow is made with a block of ice that contains condensed
milk in it. And the snow is also flavored. Shaved Snow resembles freshly fallen snowsoft, airy,
and icy cold. This rich-tasting and aesthetically pleasing dessert has a smooth and creamy taste,
not crunchy like shaved ice.
Our Product
Our mission is to distribute shaved snow blocks to the restaurants and dessert shops in Central
Florida Region. We proudly announce our product - Shaved Snow block, which is a flavored ice
product which is textured just like snow. However, Sno Block Distributor is much different than
what is in the market right now. We ensure you a quality product that you have yet to taste.
What distinguishes us from others is the difference in the taste.
Our Shaved Snow is not made from artificial flavors or Shaved Snow powder. All flavors of our
Shaved Snow are made directly from fresh materials. And we are unique in the way that we
offer a wide variety of flavors. We carry more than 20 flavors of Shaved Snow for you to choose
from. Our offer on flavors includes honeydew, grape, milk tea, coffee, green tea; mango,
pineapple, strawberry, horlicks, ovaltine, MILO, coconut, lychee, kiwi, peach, red apple, green
9

apple, tofu pudding, yogurt, black sesame and many more. Flavors will be available upon
order/request. We also offer some basic toppings like Lychee Coco Jelly, Green Apple Coco
Jelly, Grape Coco Jelly, Lady Fingers, Rainbow Jelly, Pineapple Jelly, Mini Marshmallow,
Chocolate Marshmallow, and Strawberry Mini Marshmallow. More delicious toppings will be
available upon request.
Packaging Details
Each package will contain around 10 snow blocks. Each snow block is approximately 6.3 inches
in both diameter and height, weights approximately 6.5 pounds. Each snow block makes about
15 servings, averaging 7 oz (200 g) per serving.
Start Business with a minimal invest!
Its good to start business right now! And its very easy to start! If you are running a restaurant
or dessert shop business, you do not need to invest much. What you need is to buy a snow
shaver machine and serve the dessert to the customers in a unique lovely way. Without having
to invest in expensive equipment, you can easily break even in the first few months and expect
at least 75% of profit margin thereafter. Feel free to consult with us. We recommend you to
buy a commercial Shaved Snow Shaver and other required equipments which will cost you not
more than two thousand dollars. We do not recommend that you use a regular ice shaver to
make shaved snow. To make high-quality shaved snow, the precision of the shaving blade is the
key. With a regular machine, the resulting product will be too granular and contain too many
ice crystalstherefore unable to produce the soft and smooth texture characteristic of shaved
snow. Please refer to the user's manual for general usage, routine maintenance and repairs.
You can start now with our flexible start-up package. This package includes:

1 Shaved Snow Shaver

10 blocks of shaved snow
10 Elegant Bowls
10 cups, spoons and stainless steel snow block mold
1 Pitcher with Lid for syrup storage
12 Food Graded Bags for opened snow block storage

Part Six: Diet

Healthy Eating for a Better Life
(This article has been written for Renee Reeves, for her lifestyle blog.)

To lead a better and safe life you must take care of your health. And you must eat healthy food
in order to ensure a good health. Healthy eating is not about a strict diet plan. Just keep
yourself far away from unhealthy foods. Make a list of those foods and stay away.
Foods You Must Avoid
Avoid any highly processed meat that is high in fat: fatty cuts of meat, processed lunch meat,
bologna, Salomi, Hot dogs, canned meat, and hamburger.
Oils that are all high in saturated fat: butter, beef fat, chicken fat, pork fat, stick margarine,
shortening, palm oil.
Try using whole grains instead of refined grains. Refined grains have been milled, a process that
removes the bran and germ. Refined grains like cornbread (from refined corn meal), corn
tortillas (from refined corn meal), crackers, flour tortillas (from white flour), grits, pasta (from
white flour), pitas (from white flour), pretzels, refined breakfast cereals, white bread, white
sandwich buns or rolls, white rice, croutons are high glycemic.
Control your tongue from baked beans (high in sugar), chicken pot pie (usually high in fat),
ramen noodles (high glycemic and sodium), saltine crackers (high glycemic and sodium), soft
drinks (high glycemic), eggnog (high in sugar and cholesterol), fruit juice with added sugar (high
glycemic), alcohol (more than one drink per day), chocolate (high glycemic), cake (high
glycemic), cookies (high glycemic), bagel and cream cheese (high in saturated fat), corn chips
(high glycemic and high in fat), potato chips (high glycemic), any kind of fried chips, dough nuts
(high glycemic), french fries (high glycemic and high in fat), granola bars (usually high in fat and
sugar), mayonnaise (high in saturated fat), tartar sauce (high in fat), peanut butter (high in fat
and sugar), corn dogs (high glycemic and high fat), microwave popcorn (high in fat) ice cream,
and any kind of fast foods.
Enjoy Fruits As Much As You Can
You can eat almost any fruit that hasn't been processed. Fruits like apples, apricots, bananas,
blueberries, cantaloupe, cranberries, figs, grapefruit, grapes, kiwifruit, lemon/limes, oranges,
papaya, pears, pineapple, plums, prunes, raisins, raspberries, strawberries and watermelon are
the best friends of your health.

12

Say Yes to Green Vegetables and Salads

Make a habit of eating green vegetables and salads. Dont forget to add at least 3 of these
vegetables in your daily diet chart: asparagus, avocados, beets, bell peppers, broccoli, brussels
sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, collard greens, cucumbers, eggplant, fennel,
garlic, green beans, green peas, kale, leeks, mustard greens, olives, onions, romaine lettuce,
spinach, squash, squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, turnip greens and yams.
Lean Meat for Meat Lovers
Meat lovers can eat the lean cuts of meat that haven't been processed. For example: beef (lean
cuts), chicken, most fish, lamb (lean cuts), lean ground beef (15% fat or less), lean lunch meat,
pork (lean cuts), shell fish (in moderation), salmon, tuna and turkey. You can also eat sea food
as you need.
Choose Whole Grains and Low Fat Dairy Products
Instead of eating refined grains, choose whole grains like whole wheat flour, cracked wheat,
oatmeal, whole grain corn meal, brown rice, wild rice, buckwheat, whole wheat cereals, whole
grain barley, whole rye, whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, whole wheat sandwich buns
and rolls, whole wheat tortillas and whole wheat pita bread.
Most whole dairy products are high in saturated fat. Try using reduced-fat alternatives instead.
You can put these dairy product on your list: low fat dairy products, skim milk, low fat yogurt,
low fat cheese, cottage cheese (2% milk fat or less), low fat ice cream (in moderation) and whey
(high source of protein).
Think before eating nuts. Nuts have healthy fats but can be high in calories. Oil like canola,
cottonseed, olive, safflower, soybean, sunflower, fish oils (salmon, tuna, halibut, etc.) and most
vegetable oils are good for health.

Part Seven: Disease

Three Steps to control your asthma
(This article has been written for Renee Reeves, for her lifestyle blog.)

According to the World Health Organization, about 235 million people across the world suffer
from asthma a condition that is characterized by repeated attacks of breathlessness and a
typical wheezing. It is a debilitating disease that has the potential to completely restrict the
activities of the affected person; however, by following the 3 steps outlined below, it is
certainly possible to control its progress and lead an active life.
Step 1: Identify Your Triggers
Identifying the factors that trigger your asthma holds the key to managing this ailment. Some of
the most common triggers include changes in weather, flu and cold, allergies to pollen, dust or
pet hair, exercise, exposure to cigarette smoke and emotional stress. Find out specifically what
sets off your asthma by maintaining a diary of your wheezing attacks and correlating it to these
probable triggers.
Step 2: Avoid Triggers
Work at avoiding triggers. Keep your home clean of dust by regular use of a vacuum cleaner. If
you have pets, do not allow them to move all over the house; bar them from entering your
bedroom. Keep away from people who smoke and practice deep breathing or meditation to
keep your mind calm. During cold winters, make sure you stay warm enough and cover up
when you go outdoors.
Step 3: Use Medication Correctly
The correct use of anti-asthmatic medication is one of the most important factors that
determine how well you cope. Take your medication as prescribed, including the use of an
inhaler for emergencies. Inhalation therapy is the method of choice to control asthma;
overcome any psychological barriers you may have about this having addictive potential.
Keep in regular touch with your doctor; do not wait for symptoms to aggravate before asking
for help. Speak to your doctor about creating an asthma action plan that includes medication,
diet and avoidance of triggers. On World Asthma Day being held on May 7, 2013, make a firm
pledge to yourself to control your asthma and lead a fulfilling life.

Part Ten: Finance

Determine your financial comfort
(This article has been written for Tom Palange, for his finance counseling website.)

Despite the high degree of discomfort discussing financial issues, asking for help before a
financial crisis strikes will help you in the long run. In many societal circles, discussions about
money are considered taboo. It is not generally appropriate to begin sentences with, "I hear
that you and the Mrs. are having financial troubles".
Credit counseling organizations have the opportunity to educate a wide variety of people
through, both one on one counseling and public seminars. It is noticeable that socioeconomic
boundaries are nearly non-existent when looking at the lack of financial knowledge and
discipline. Just because an individual has a six-figure salary does not mean that they are more
financially savvy than someone who makes less than thirty thousand per year is. In fact, in some
instances it can be quite the opposite.
Credit counselors work with individuals who receive high paying salaries, yet have struggled for
years trying to pull their finances together. Motivated by pride and the belief that someone
with a graduate degree doesn't need help managing money, these individuals can just as easily
dig deeper into debt. Though this is not the theme across the board, it is prevalent in numerous
situations. The lesson learned is that a financial crisis can come at all income levels. Learn the
danger signs of a financial crisis before it strikes and know that you are not alone - there is
financial education available.

5 Exercises You Can Do While at Work
(This article has been written for Renee Reeves, for her lifestyle blog.)

Sitting at your desk and staring at the computer screen for hours is not something that most of
us, who have regular nine-to-five jobs, can avoid. However, what is most worrying about this
kind of a sedentary lifestyle is that it takes a toll on our health and fitness. With all of us running
after time constantly, and not getting ample time to workout at home or at a gym, exercising
while at work, may be the only possibility.
This will not only reduce stress and keep you energized, focused and healthy, but will also
increase your productivity at work. All you need is a break of a few minutes. If you are not
blessed with a gym in your office premises, do keep the following tips in mind and make the
most of it. You can practice these without leaving your office. Do them every day and notice the
difference.
Take it to the mat
Keep a fold-able exercise mat in your office, which can be used to carry out basic exercises like
stomach crunches, push-ups and leg lifts. This can help to burn off carbohydrates and revitalize
you for the rest of the day.
Take the stairs
When given the choice between taking the elevator or climbing the stairs to your floor at work,
opt for the latter. Climbing stairs is an easy exercise and also one of the best every day
exercises for office-goers. It not only burns calories, but this cardiovascular activity also gets
your heart pumping and helps in boosting blood circulation.
Stress buster
Squeezing a stress ball repeatedly gets the blood flowing, and is a good exercise for heavy
keyboard users. It also increases strength of the forearm and joints. And it is fun!
Keep walking
Walk around your office after lunch, or within the premises. Brisk walking for 10 minutes or
more boosts energy levels and helps fight stress and aids in relaxation.

24

Throw your weight(s) around

Keep small hand weights at your desk and lift them while talking on the phone. Try lifting
weights that are not very heavy when sitting at the desk. Take a 10-minute break to stand up
and do simple lifting exercises. Do two or three sets of 10 to 12 repetitions for a quick, efficient
toning workout. You can also stretch a bit while sitting on your chair.

Part Twelve: Food and Drinks

Top Foods that Reduce Cholesterol
(This article has been written for Renee Reeves, for her lifestyle blog.)

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is made by the liver. It is a part of every cell in the
body and serves many vital functions. However, sometimes our bodies make more cholesterol
than we need, and this excess cholesterol circulates in the bloodstream. High levels of
cholesterol in the blood can clog blood vessels and increase the risk for heart disease and
stroke.
Top foods to reduce cholesterol:
Oats: Oats, the sturdy breakfast food is not only a fine way to start the day, but it can also really
bring down your bad LDL cholesterol levels without lowering your good cholesterol. It is rich in
soluble fiber (beta-glucan), a type of fiber, which helps lower LDL. Soluble fiber appears to
reduce the absorption of cholesterol in your intestines.
Fish: Fish are one of the foods that will help lower your cholesterol because they have a high
concentration of Omega-3 fatty acids. Fatty fish like salmon, lake trout and herring are the
best for lowering your cholesterol. Two servings of fish a week will make a huge difference on
your cholesterol levels.
Beans: Researchers at Arizona State University Polytechnic found that adding a cup of beans
to soup lowers total cholesterol, including LDL, by up to 8%. All thanks to the high fiber levels in
this veggie, which slows the rate and amount of absorption of cholesterol in certain foods. So,
try black, kidney, or pinto beans; each supplies about one-third of your days fiber needs.
Garlic: Apart from adding that extra zing to any dish, garlic has been found to be highly
effective in lowering cholesterol, preventing blood clots and keeping blood pressure under
check, and offering protection against infections. Pop 2 to 4 fresh cloves daily and reap its
benefits.
Nuts: Certain nuts like almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, pecans, and pistachios deserve an honored
spot in the kitchen of every healthy eater. They contain omega-3 fatty acids. Theyre also a
source of fiber and vitamin-E.
Soya: A number of studies show that soy protein may lower bad LDL cholesterol and
triglycerides without lowering good HDL cholesterol. Soya products are high in protein and
fiber, and low in saturated fat, which are additional plusses to this heart-healthy food.

26

Olive oil: Olive oil contains a mix of antioxidants that can lower LDL cholesterol without
affecting HDL cholesterol level. The Food and Drug Administration, USA recommends using
about 2 tablespoons (about 23 grams) of olive oil a day to get its heart-healthy benefits. Some
research suggests that the cholesterol-lowering effects of olive oil are even greater if you
choose extra-virgin olive oil, meaning the oil is less processed and contains more heart-healthy
antioxidants.

Cinnamon: Plant compounds in cinnamon have been found to be effective in lowering

cholesterol. The results of a study from 2003 in Pakistan showed lower levels of fasting glucose,
triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol after 40 days of cinnamon use with levels
continuing to drop for 20 days after that.
Apple: Eating an apple or two each day may reduce heart disease risk factors, a new study
shows. Apples are rich in fiber, which assists in improving our digestive system function. Its also
rich in polyphenols which stimulate metabolism and fat breakdown in the blood, thereby
considerably reducing the risks of cardiovascular diseases like stroke or heart attack.
Blueberries: Pterostilbene the fat-fighting compound in blueberries is responsible for
regulating lipids and cholesterol in the bloodstream. Antioxidants in blueberries have been
found to lower bad cholesterol and improve cholesterol health in several notable studies.
Cranberries: Cranberries are rich sources of anthocyanins, flavonols, and proanthocyanidins,
plant chemicals that prevent LDL cholesterol from oxidising, a process that makes it more likely
to stick to your artery walls. These chemicals also keep red blood cells from getting too sticky.
An added bonus: They initiate a complex chemical reaction that helps blood vessels relax. Plus,
they decrease LDL cholesterol and increase HDL.
Flaxseeds: Flaxseed oil contains the essential fatty-acid alpha linolenic acid, and whole flaxseed
provides fiber and other health-boosting compounds that may contribute to lowering
cholesterol and decreasing cardiovascular health risks.
Chocolate: The powerful antioxidant in chocolate helps build HDL cholesterol levels. Remember
to choose the dark or bittersweet kind. Compared to milk chocolate, it has more than 3 times as
many antioxidants, which prevent blood platelets from sticking together and may even keep
arteries unclogged.

Part Thirteen: Health

Fast & Best Ways to Lose Weight
(This article has been written for Renee Reeves, for her lifestyle blog.)
Weight loss is not rocket science! Nevertheless, every time you put on extra kilos, shedding them looks
tough, doesnt it? Well, actually not; weight management is easy if you get the basics right.
The long and short of it
Youve heard this one before you are what you eat. What you may not know is the caveat to this you
are how you use your food as well! To maintain your weight, the amount of calories that you consume
daily must be equal to the energy you expend; or, in other words, you must use up your food calories
through work and working out. When people gain weight, they are either
(a) Eating too many calories, or (b) burning too few calories.
You flip that statement and there you have it the key to weight loss consume fewer calories and/or
burn more calories. Really, it is as simple as that.
Quick calculator
Here is how it works: 7000 calories equals 1 kilogram of fat. So if you cut back 500 calories a day, you
can lose a kilo of weight in a fortnight. Add some exercise to your routine, say an hour-long brisk walk
daily, and you can lose that much weight in only a week!
That being said, there are certain short cuts you can take to hasten this process. For example, it pays to
know what types of exercise will melt off those pounds faster or what foods will boost your metabolism
(i.e., help you burn more calories).
Interval training
You can hasten weight loss by introducing short bursts of high intensity in your exercise routine. Dr
Boutcher at the University of New South Wales found that people who engaged in only 8 seconds of
sprinting alternated with 12 seconds of light cycling for a total of 20 minutes reduced three times as
much weight as their counterparts who exercised on the bike for a total of 40 minutes. Dr Boutcher says
that interval training burns more fat by producing chemicals called catecholamines in your body during
the higher intensity bouts of exercise.
Blasting belly flab
You lose weight on your tummy, and all of a sudden you look thinner and more compact! Researchers at
the Reina Sofia University Hospital found that when you eat more monounsaturated fats or MUFAs, you
tend to accumulate less belly fat, even without additional exercise. So it makes sense to use oils rich in
MUFAs such as groundnut, mustard, canola or olive oils in your cooking. Eat a handful of nuts or seeds

28

such as peanuts, almonds, pistas or roasted pumpkin seeds instead of biscuits or namkeen as snacks.
Other sources of MUFA are olives and avocados.
Lifestyle changes
So youve exercised for 30 minutes in the morning and now you think you can relax the rest of the day?
Think again. Get more active during the day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk to work, get up
and stretch during a commercial break while watching TV all of these small changes will add up in
contributing towards shedding weight.

Part Fourteen: Home Dcor

Bedroom Lighting
(This article has been written for Renee Reeves, for her lifestyle blog.)

Bedroom is not just a place to get sleep. Its also a place where you can relax, watch television,
read story books and spend lovely time with your partner. Your bedroom should give you a
sense of peace. Only lighting can change the environment of your bedroom. Lighting can make
your bedroom more romantic. Again lighting can make your bedroom peaceful & sleepy.

Before buying bedroom lighting, first determine the size of the room. Take your room
measurements, along with outlet locations and furniture placement to a lighting
showroom. The experts there can help you fill in with just the right light.

You must have enough light to focus on particular areas, as well as permeate the
corners and edges.

Consider scale. Bedrooms typically have lower 8- or 9-foot-tall ceilings. Avoid fixtures
with longer bodies in favor of shorter or flush-mounted fixtures. You need a certain level
for reading and enough lighting for dressing. You also need light to be high enough to
reach all the areas.

Decide what you want to do in the room, and then choose appropriate lighting. Home
computers, sewing machines and exercise equipment in the bedroom need directed
lighting. Sitting areas beg for softer, shaded fixtures. Makeup tables demand brighter
light.

Bedroom furniture is a major purchase and lighting choices should coordinate with that
style.

Reading lights on either side of the bed will supplement the rooms general lighting and
also allow both partners to read at individual times. You can consider lights that can be
mounted on headboards to save space. Reading lights should come with bendable necks
for convenience and allow for a more focal lighting source.

Decorative lights that have an ability to change color will add flexibility by creating
different hues to enhance your mood.

Automatic lighting inside your wardrobe works perfectly every time you open it.
30

You can choose lighter window shades. These types of shades allow for more natural
light in your bedroom. They will still cut the glare during the day and offer privacy at
night.

The best way to light your bedroom

The main source of light should be neutral and relaxing something best achieved with soft,
warm light bulbs. You can then add brighter, practical pools of lighting for the dressing table
and wardrobe area. A reading lamp on both sides of the bed is also nice. This way one partner
can sleep whilst the other stays up reading. You can use different types of wall light shades.
Make your bedroom more romantic
With Living Colors luminaries you can add a hint of soothing mauve to a dim white light to make
your bedroom more romantic. If you want to take things a step further you can try LED candle
tea lights. They mimic the flickering of real candles and add a feeling of sensuality to the
bedroom.

Keep Your Kitchen Clean Everyday
(This article has been written for Yvette Heyliger.)

To keep your family healthy & safe, you must clean your kitchen every day. A clean kitchen
ensures you a healthy cooking. If you do it on a daily basis, you can save both time & workload.
Simple Plan
Cleaning plan is very simple.

Clean before cooking: just wash necessary materials before cooking. This is also a part of
your cooking preparation.
Clean after having a meal: this is the most important & main part. Now your kitchen is a
total mess. You have to clean your oven, dishes, pans and other dirt.

General Tips

Fix a certain place for everything. It's much easier to use a utensil or appliance, clean it
and put it away when it has a home.
Identify spots in your kitchen that accumulate clutter and take a few minutes every day
to clear those spots and place objects in their correct homes.
Try to end each day with a clean, empty kitchen sink. Run the dishwasher before you go
to bed and unload it first thing in the morning.
To quickly clean burned food on a pan, add some dish soap and 1/2" of water. Bring to a
boil, and then let the liquid cool in the pan. The burned food will be easy to remove.
Put some lemon or lime pieces through the garbage disposal every few days for a clean
fresh smell.
To freshen the garbage disposal, sprinkle a couple of tablespoons of baking soda down
the drain, drop in two ice cubes and turn it on. Then run the hot water for a few minutes
while the disposal is working.
To clean sluggish drains, pour 1/2 cup baking soda down the drain. Add 1/2 cup white
vinegar and cover the drain. Let this mixture foam for a few minutes, and then pour 8
cups of boiled water down the drain to flush it.
If plastic from the bread wrapper melts onto your toaster, use a little nail polish
remover to get it off. Let the toaster cool before you try this.
Clean your coffee maker every few weeks by filling the water reservoir with equal parts
white vinegar and water and putting it through the brew cycle. Then use clean fresh
water and repeat the brew cycle to rinse the machine. Repeat with fresh water two
more times.
For glass cook tops, there are special commercial cleaners that work well. Use them
with a hard plastic scraper to remove burned-on food. Clean your glass cook top as soon
as it cools to avoid having to scrub burned food.
32

Clean your Microwave oven quickly

Sometimes food spills over and burns on the oven floor. To remove this quickly you need a
handful of salt, some cinnamon, 2 Tbsp. lemon juice or vinegar, 2 cups of water and paper
towel.

Sprinkle salt on the mess. This will help to reduce smoke and make it easy to clean the
mess.
You can add some cinnamon to the salt to help reduce odors.
Now mix lemon juice/vinegar and water together in a 4 cup glass microwave safe bowl.
Microwave on HIGH for 2 or 3 minutes.
Carefully remove the bowl and wipe the microwave with paper towels.
Repeat as necessary.

If you don't have a self-cleaning oven:

Scrape up any large spills, then spray cleaner inside the oven, close the door and let it sit
overnight so the cleaner has time to work.
Place racks in the bathtub with about 1/2 cup dishwasher detergent and cover them
with several inches of warm water. Let the racks soak for 45 minutes, then rinse and
dry.

Essential kitchen cleaning tools

To keep your kitchen clean you must have some cleaning tools. Dont forget to keep them in a
certain place where easy to find. Basic cleaning tools are:

Mop, broom, vacuum (for the floor)

Scrub Brush
Dish Cloth and Paper Towel
Basic rags and buckets (for floors and wiping down surfaces)
Cleaning products (special ones for the oven, stove top, sink, counters, etc.)
Anti-bacterial products
Window cleaner

Watch out

Don't mix ammonia and bleach because it will create toxic fumes.
A sponge is actually a great way to spread germs. It is better using paper towels,
discarding them after cleaning each surface, to totally prevent cross contamination.

Part Sixteen: Ideas

Unique Home Decorating Ideas
(This article has been written for Renee Reeves, for her lifestyle blog.)

There are some people who like doing up their homes and then there are some for whom
decorating their homes is a major passion.
Inspiration to decorate homes comes at strange times and especially so when you are not
exactly looking out for it. These ideas can be unusual and fun to do. Just go all out and let your
creative juices flow. You never know what all you come up with. Here are a few ideas to get you
started.
Texture Talk
One of the simplest ways to get an unusual look at your house is to do up a textured wall
yourself feels interior designer Ketki Passi. She says, "You can try and make your own textured
walls - just hand paint them.
Pretty Concrete
You can use a portion of a concrete pipe for a flowerpot. You can place it at home or at the
window sill. The strange flower pot will add a fun element. Ketki adds, "Bonsai plants can fill up
the corners of your rooms and can be placed at the entrance to get that fresh green look at
home."
Shell That Now
Use the shells you collected on that summer trip to the beach for candle holders. Fasten a short
piece of wicking to a metal wick holder and anchor inside the shell. Fill the shell with melted
candle wax. Trim the wick. Allow setting and there you have it a delightful way to re-live those
summer memories. Interior designer Mohit G Nishar says, "One gets all types of fragrances,
colors, shapes of candles."
Light It
Hang a large chandelier right on top of your dining table. It will not only provide the necessarily
subdued light for your guests at dinnertime but will nicely eliminate the unwanted glare of
direct light. It will also give your dining room table an uncommon elegance.
Placed Well

34

To delight the senses before any food arrives at the table, place tiny bowls of sweet-scented
herbs at each place setting.
All Glassed
Exhibit your collection of antique glass bottles on window sills where the light from outside can
show off their beauty to those within. This adds an interesting touch of color to a neutrallypainted room.
Table Frames
Tiny frames can be used as place card holders for that fancy dinner. Mohit adds, "Different
shapes of mirrors can also be used as great decorative items when put in interesting frames."
Ladder on the Wall
Lean a wooden ladder against a bathroom wall and place towels over the rung. This makes an
interesting addition to the room instead of the traditional towel rack.
Trunk Call
Make use of that old suitcase or that large old trunk as a coffee table.
Go on, have fun decorating!

(This article has been written for Renee Reeves. For her lifestyle blog)

Seldom do we worry about our kids falling prey to heart problems. They have always been a
subject of concern for the aged, but not for happy-go-lucky kids who dance around with joy.
Your child, if diagnosed with heart disease, can indeed be a thing of worry. You need to
understand your childs condition and what you can expect in the coming months.
There are two major types of heart problems that affect children. One is congenital, which is by
birth and the other is acquired or due to unhealthy lifestyle or infection. Congenital heart
disease is when a child is born with an abnormally-structured heart.
Dr. Zainul Abedin Hamdulay, M.S., M.Ch., D.N.B. (Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon)
Consultant to Lilavati, Breach Candy, Wockhardt and Prince Aly Khan Hospitals, Mumbai says,
Congenital problems occur as the babys heart develops during pregnancy in the mothers
womb. Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) is a defect in the structure of the heart and blood vessels
of a new born. It is the most commonly occurring heart defect in children.
This defect depends on the conditions present at birth that can affect the way the heart
functions. One of the most common birth defects, it is also a major cause of lifelong disability
and infant death.
The other is Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) or a condition of damaged heart valves. It is caused
by rheumatic fever, which is a result of untreated bacterial infection.
Symptoms
Children show symptoms and signs of congestive cardiac failure such as breathlessness, failure
to thrive, poor feeding, excessive sweating and multiple admissions for lung infections.
Sometimes CHD can be simple and need not require complicated surgeries and medications.
Situations wherein there is a small hole between the heart chambers that close on its own may
not need any surgery or even at times medication.
If the disease is complex, such as contraction of the aorta wherein there is a tight narrowing in
the aorta (the main blood vessel supplying oxygenated blood) restricting blood flow to the
lower part of the body, then it requires immediate surgery. A surgery over a period of time may
have to be performed to avoid unfortunate circumstances.

36

If at all a child has encountered a health problem, immediately consult a paediatrician. It is

best to get kids treated completely for fever and infections so that they do not become victims
of RHD, says Dr. Hamdulay.
It is also important to pay attention to what your child eats. Make sure they consume healthy
and hygienic food. Physical hygiene is also important, especially cleaning the teeth properly.
Abnormal heart sound or heart murmur when listening to the heartbeat can also indicate
trouble in toddlers.
Treatment
The treatment and medicines used and how well the baby responds to them depends on the
congenital heart condition. Many defects need to be followed carefully. Some will heal over
time, while others will need to be treated, Dr. Hamdulay.
Some congenital heart diseases can be treated with medication alone. Others need to be
treated with one or more heart surgeries.
As congenital heart disease is a birth defect, it cannot be avoided. Thus, care should be taken
when your child is in the womb. It is important to:
1. Inform your doctor about your pregnancy before starting any medication.
2. Avoid smoking and alcohol intake.
3. Get vaccinated for flu or fever.
4. Avoid contact with people who have infection.
5. Have your blood sugar checked and maintain it.
6. It is also advised to go for 2D echo to assess the heart condition of the baby in womb.

39

Heyligers favorite book/movie/line from play/TV show

Favorite book: Also Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela
Favorite Movie: Gandhi starring Ben Kingsley
Favorite line from play: I found God in myself and I loved HER fiercely, from For Colored Girls
Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf by Ntozake Shange and Why didnt I
fight harder? Why didnt I picket the White House, all by myself if nobody would come? from
The Normal Heart by Larry Kramer.
Favorite reality show: CBS reality show, Survivor
A Play or Production which changed her life
By the end of the play, Master Harold and the Boys, I was unable to move or speak. When
the house lights came up in the theatre, I was weeping uncontrollably for some time. I sensed
an usher hovering nearby who probably wanted to ask me to exit the theatre, but didnt.
Eventually, I collected myself and left, but I was changed. Athol Fugards play allowed me to
see that it was possible to use theatre as an agent for social change and empowerment while
still entertaining. His play directly affected the dramatist I was to become. It sounds clich, but
I too want to help create a better world, one ticket buyer at a time.
Her dreams
Her dream is to present her plays on stages around the country, to give an acceptance speech
at the Tony Awards and taking a road-trip to see America.
The one thing nobody knows about her
That racism, sexism and classism have worn me down (but not beaten me); and that I worry
that I wont see parity for women theatre artists, especially women theatre artists of color, in
my lifetime.

Part Nineteen: Life Facts

Drinking Too Much Water Can Be Risky!
(This article has been written for Renee Reeves, for her lifestyle blog.)

Excessive water in your system can dilute your body fluids so much that the sodium levels
become life-threateningly low.
Water may be the elixir of life, but it sure can send your health into a tailspin, even endanger
your life, if you drink too much of it. While packaged water, juice and cola companies hard-sell
their thirst-quenchers to you through TV and print advertisements, the truth is that drinking too
much water can do you more harm than good.
Due to excessive water consumption, people have died of over-hydration, which goes by the
name of Exercise-Associated Hyponatraemia (EAH). In simple terms, it means that you have
drank too much water and the excess has diluted your body fluids so much that the sodium
levels have become life-threateningly low, causing cells to swell.
That includes brain cells leading to loss of consciousness, seizures and even coma and death.
For long-distance runners, this can be a particular hazard. With half-marathons and marathons
being all the rage, runners while practicing must resist the temptation to tank themselves up
with too much water.
Water intoxication is always on the cards if you believe you have to `stay ahead of thirst` by
drinking excessive quantities of fluids. To do so is entirely un-physiological. Drinking more water
than your need increases your total blood volume and also pressures you kidneys into working
overtime so as to filter excess water out of your circulatory system. It is, however, incredibly
rare for someone to die of dehydration in a temperate climate, not even sportsmen who sweat
a great deal.
The right way to drink water is on your TV screen. When Tennis legends Roger Federer or Rafael
Nadal play five gruelling sets of tennis in the baking sun, sweating profusely, how do they drink?
They sip.
They may sip at every end change, but they certainly don`t gulp. While exercising, you should
balance how much water you drink to how much you are sweating out.
All runners should know that over-consumption of fluids, whether it`s water or sports drinks,
can be fatal. EAH due to excessive hydration has caused at least a dozen deaths worldwide and
there have been more than 1,600 documented cases of it around the globe.

41

The International Marathon Medical Directors Association advocates `drinking to thirst` and no
more. That means 0.03 litres per kilogram. So, for a 100 kg person that`s a maximum of three
litres. The average man is around 70 kgs. Work out the math. Five reasons to kick the cola
1. You will flash a prettier smile. The sugar and acid in soft drinks dissolves tooth enamel while
the colouring in darker fizzy drinks leaves dark stains on teeth.
2. You will reduce your risk of heart disease. The high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in many soft
drinks increases the risk of developing heart disease and diabetes.
3. You will reduce your risk of osteoporosis. The phosphoric acid found in soft drinks can loosen
a tight bolt, eat away metal, and leach calcium from the bones.
4. You will reduce your risk of diabetes. The connection between excess sugar consumption and
type 2 diabetes is well-known.
5. You will stabilise blood sugar and energy levels. Simple sugars, the most harmful of which are
HFCS, are carbs that cause a rapid energy spike followed by a sudden plummet. Adding
caffeine, a cola essential, intensifies this roller-coaster effect.

Part Twenty: Lifestyle

Managing family and work
(This article has been written for Renee Reeves, for her lifestyle blog.)

It`s no surprise that moms who work full time jobs feel the strain of their extra-busy lives. In
fact, 99 percent of working mothers say their schedules stress them out.
It is natural to feel guilty about leaving your kids with a caretaker or to feel overwhelmed about
keeping your boss, clients and family happy. Take action to stomp out some of that stress and
manage your guilt during Stress Awareness Month (April) and all year long.
Share the load
More often these days, dads are stepping in to take on parenting duties. A recent study by the
Families and Work Institute found that fathers spend an hour more a day with their kids than
dads did 25 years ago. Dad`s participation can come in especially handy when the kids get sick
or when you just cannot make that parent-teacher conference. So when it comes to parenting,
don`t hesitate to share the load of responsibilities with your partner.
Make your schedule flexible
If you`re feeling super stressed, ask your employer about rearranging your schedule so that you
work four days instead of five, or have every other Friday off. This may incur a pay cut, but it
might be worth it to strike that delicate balance between your career and kids. But if a flexible
schedule is not feasible, try to pick one evening or weekend day when you can focus solely on
your family. That means turn off the laptop, leave your cell at home and hit the playground. In
addition to being a stellar mom, this play time away from the job will recharge your batteries,
and you can return to work fresh and less stressed.
Find perspective
If you are at work right now, you`re probably wishing you were at home. But guess what? You
may not be that much more satisfied if you stayed at home full time. According to Dr. Leon
Hoffman, director of the Pacella Parent Child Center, many working mothers wish they were
home with their children, and while at home, wish they were back at work. Bottom line? Being
a mom is a tough job, no matter how you slice it. But if you gain perspective on your situation
and are confident about why you`re working (or staying at home whatever the case may be),
you can get through even the toughest days with less guilt.

43

Stress less for the kids

Here is some good news for working moms. Research shows that children who go to daycare
are not destined for delinquency. A study measuring the development of more than 6,000
children found that those with moms who work outside the home experience no permanent
damage because of the maternal absence. And according to Ellen Galinsky, president of the
Families and Work Institute, more kids prefer to have their parents be less stressed out and
tired than actually with them 24/7.
In a recent issue of The American Psychoanalyst, Galinsky writes,"Does this finding mean that
children do not care about time? No. Children care about parents being less stressed because
they do care about the time spent together." So instead of worrying about the number of hours
you spend at home, focus instead on having fun with your family when you are with them.

Part Twenty One: Nutrition

Natural Wonder: Avocado
(This article has been written for Renee Reeves, for her lifestyle blog.)

This creamy flavor-filled fruit is a great resource of nutrients. It helps fight cancer, keeps your
heart healthy and can also delay aging.
Avocado and its nutrients
Avocados are getting popular as your neighborhood fruits vendor too has begun to stock them.
This creamy, delicious fruit contain many essential nutrients such as folic acid, potassium, fiber,
vitamin E, B-vitamins. In addition this fruit is known as a nutrient-booster as it aids better
nutrient absorption.
Health benefits of avocados
Protection against oral cancer: Research suggests that certain compounds in avocados manage
to seek out pre-cancerous and cancerous oral cancer cells and destroy them, without causing
any harm to healthy cells.
Keeps breast cancer away: Avocado also helps prevent breast cancer. Like olive oil, this fruit is
high in oleic acid, which according to many studies is known to prevent breast cancer.
To protect against prostate cancer: Avocado also inhibits the growth of prostate cancer.
For a healthy heart: Studies show that people who eat foods rich in folate have lesser chances
of developing health diseases. A cup of avocado meet b23% of the recommended value of
folate, so make it a part of your daily diet to keep heart diseases at bay. Additionally, avocado
contains good amounts of vitamin E, monounsaturated fats and glutathione, which are good for
you heart.
To prevent stroke: This fruit contents high amounts of folic acid, which as per various studies is
known to help prevent strokes.
Lowers cholesterol: This fruit is high in a compound called beta-sitosterol, which studies say
can lower cholesterol. Another compound, oleic acid is also known to help in lowering
cholesterol.
Nutrient-booster: Avocados help greatly enhance your bodys ability to absorb the healthpromoting carotenoids (organic pigments like lycopene and beta carotene) from vegetables. So
add some slices of this yummy fruit to your salad and reap its benefits.

45

Source of vitamin E and antioxidants: Avocados are rich in vitamin E and an antioxidant called
glutathione, both these help protect the body against damage from free radicals.
For healthy eyes: Avocados have more of the carotenoid lutein in comparison to any other
popular fruit. This compound is known to protect eyes from muscular degeneration and
cataracts, both age-related eye diseases.

46

Part Twenty Two: Real Estate

Incorporation of Real estate
(This article has been written for Kallen Diggs, for his real estate business website.)

Many people have a few real estate investment properties and they may wonder if they should
incorporate. There are many sides to the discussion that can depend on your goals and purpose
for being a real estate investor. Even if you aren't a big business this question that can help you
with your finances. There are many ways you can benefit from incorporating your real estate
investments.
It may be best to incorporate to protect your business assets from your personal assets. When
you have everything in your name, you can take a lot of the responsibility if you were to receive
a lawsuit from a tenant. This can not only wipe out your business assets, but can also affect
your personal assets.
Incorporating can be also be beneficial when it comes to taxes. Having a corporation can help
you turn nondeductible expenses into deductible expenses. For example, if you have a home
office that you would like on your expenses, it can be hard to claim them on your personal
taxes. But, if your corporation leased the same space from your home, you have an easier
chance of claiming the expenses. Also by incorporating you reduce your risk of being audited by
the IRS.
Being a corporation can help separate your business and personal life, as well. If you don't want
to put out your personal information to your tenants, being a corporation can give you a sense
of anonymity. It can also make the interactions more professional, rather than you being seen
as just a landlord. You are now seen as a part of a management corporation and can make for
easier negotiations.
If you have decided to incorporate, another question that may come up is which entity or
structure is best for you. There are three main structures: corporation, Limited Partnership (LP),
and Limited Liability Company (LLC). They each have their different benefits and negatives. A
corporation is the traditional business structure. It gives your real estate investments the most
separation from your personal assets, but also has the most upkeep because it requires a board
of directors, annual meetings with minutes, issuing stock, and an annual shareholder meeting
with minutes. An LP is relatively simple but the main downside is liability. It requires at least
one general partner that will have unlimited liability. If you're a relatively small investor, you
will likely be the general partner and you won't have the limited liability that you wanted. LLC's
are also relatively simple and is recommended as the first you use when you're starting out. It's

47

recommended because you with the liability you can't lose more than you put in and its upkeep
is very flexible.
The issue of incorporating your real estate business can be complicated. It is recommended
that before you begin the process of incorporating you use or consult an attorney to see
examine what will be best for you and to also be informed of your states laws.

Part Twenty Three: Recipe

Delicious Healthy Recipes for Spring
(This article has been written for Renee Reeves, for her lifestyle blog.)

Healthy eating is not about strict nutrition philosophies, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving
yourself of the foods you love. Some people think that healthy eating means eating tasteless
foods. Thats not exactly true. To keep yourself healthy you must expand your range of healthy
food choices and learn how to plan ahead to create and maintain a tasty, healthy diet. You can
cook delicious healthy foods at home. As spring comes with warmer weather and with the fresh
flavors of vegetables and fruits, here two spring time delicious healthy recipes for you.
Garden Pasta Salad
This lightly dressed pasta salad gets lots of flavor from kalamata olives and basil. A colorful mix
of diced bell pepper, shredded carrot and tomatoes adds vitamins and minerals. Serve on a
crisp bed of greens. Toss in canned chunk light tuna, cooked chicken or flavored baked tofu to
add protein and make it more substantial.

52

o Enjoy the benefits of our Double Pane Insulated Glass in Sterling! Our Exclusive
feature is that we manufacture our own insulated glass and offer same day
glass replacement.
o You can save a good amount of money by installing modern Double Pane
windows! Double pane windows have two sheets of glass in each window.
There is a small space left between the sheets of glass to provide added
insulation. In many cases, a gas such as argon is added to the space between
the glasses to further increase the insulation. Double pane windows may be as
much as 50 percent more energy efficient than single pane windows.
o So, if you're looking for ways to save money on energy costs, one of the best
choices you can make is replacing old single-pane windows with modern
double-pane windows.
o Double pane windows also help with noise insulation, as well, giving you a
quieter home environment. They can also make your home safer, because it's
harder for a burglar to break in through a double pane window than a single
pane.
o You may also choose to have a UV coating applied to your window glass. This
prevents UV rays from getting through the glass, which is better for your family
and may help protect your furniture, curtains and carpet from sun damage.
o Modern Glass offers you a very quick insulated glass replacement service. Our
experienced mechanics are specialized in repairing window glasses without any
construction mess! There is no need of further painting, varnish or window
frame replacement. They will just replace your glasses.
Low-E Glass
o Natural light is always an asset in any home. The more sun you have coming in
through skylights and large windows, the more open and inviting a space will
appear. Also, when you have the sun working for you full time, it cuts down on
daytime energy costs. However, whenever you open up your house to the
outdoors, you're also making yourself vulnerable to exterior threats. In this
case, the more day lighting you have in the home, the more you risk
overexposure to the sun. Solar gain, heat loss, and UV infiltration will always be
an issue when it comes to natural light. Therefore, when installing new panes in
your house, it's always a good idea to invest in low-e glass for your windows.
Tempered Safety Glass
o You have children at home? Tensed that they may break glasses and get
injured? Modern Glass offers high quality tempered glass which will reduce the
risk of injury caused by jagged glass shards. Tempered glass is less likely to
cause injury, including lacerations, when it is broken. A glass that does not
shatter into razor-sharp slivers can be used in places where breakage is
inevitable. Tempered glass breaks into small, circular "pebbles" because of the
way the molecules bond. It will also shatter evenly and crumble into small
53

pieces even if force is applied at one end. That means larger shards of broken
glass will not crack off and fly through the air when the glass is broken.
o Tempered Glass is made by a special heat treatment and quenching process
that increases its strength up to four or five times that of annealed glass. If
subjected to stresses beyond its capacity, Tempered Glass simply disintegrates
into innumerable small pieces, significantly reducing the risk of serious injury.
Tempered glass is used anywhere glass is more prone to human contact such as
doors, windows close to the floor, stair landings and tub/shower enclosures.
Check your local building code for details or more specific locations. Your safety
and the safety of your family, guests, and visitors is the responsibility we take
very seriously.
Laminated Safety Glass
o Laminated glass windows have a protective vinyl layer of material inside of two
pieces of glass. There are several benefits of using laminated glass in your
home.
o Installing laminated glass windows reduces the risk of being cut by shattered
glass. When laminated glass is broken, its vinyl inner layer keeps the shards
from scattering, much like tempered glass. The shards stay affixed to the vinyl
liner. Additional break-in protection is provided since the glass cannot be cut
from outside, making glass cutters useless for entering your home.
o If your home is close to a construction site, airport or freeway, you may be
particularly interested in the sound-deadening qualities of laminated glass.
People who live in neighborhoods where homes are close together may also
appreciate this advantage.
o Some furniture, carpets and curtains fade in the strong Ultra-violet (UV) light
allowed in by normal glass. However, UV rays from the sun are blocked up to 95
percent by the film in laminated glass. Visible light comes in, while UV light is
blocked.
Obscure Glass
o Obscure glass is glass manufactured with random bumps and lumps on the
surface. It is sometimes frosted but its most telling feature is the way it distorts
the view, so images and objects are not clearly visible. Obscure glass is also
commonly used in shower doors, as it provides more privacy to the bather than
clear glass. You can also use obscure glass for decorating other areas in your
home.
Plate Glass
o Plate glass is a type of glass that is cast in a solid plate, typically through a roller
process. The result is extremely flat and free of distortions. There are a variety

Part Twenty Five: Travel and Leisure

Rome: for a Romantic Family Vacation
(This article has been written for Roberta Stuart, for her travel blog.)

Rome is considered one of the world's most romantic cities, and it is a well-deserved
reputation. But even if you've brought the children and you're staying in a family hotel, Rome
demands you find time for a little romance! A family holiday to the Italian capital will be filled
with once-in-a-life time experiences, but it can also provide a surprisingly intimate atmosphere.
If you explore some of the city's lesser-known and consequently less crowded spots, you'll find
romance wherever you go - even with the children along for the ride!
Choose the Best Location
One of the most fashionable and romantic areas of the city is Trastevere, which is loved by
couples and families for its beautiful churches and buzzing atmosphere. It's also an ideal place
to find a wonderful family hotel. Rome and all its major sights are just a short distance from
Trastevere, making it a perfect location for a base for younger children, who might not be up to
too much walking. However, this district is also well known for its romantic restaurants and fine
cuisine, so it's not hard for mum and dad to take advantage of hotel childcare and slip away for
the evening together.
Setting the Scene
The Aventine Hill and the Giardino degli Aranci are both attractions that are appealing to both
children and adults. The tranquil atmosphere of these gardens that date back to the 13th
century make the perfect setting for a romantic stroll on an afternoon away from your family
hotel. Rome is home to the Palace of the Cavalieri di Malta, which is the headquarters of the
Priory of the Knights of Malta, the only private organization in the world that is also a sovereign
state. The headquarters 'keyhole' is a unique attraction, made from topiary hedges that frame
magnificent views of St. Peter's Basilica from the top of the hill. Children will love spending time
here, while mum and dad can enjoy a romantic stroll.
Enjoy a Romantic Atmosphere
To truly absorb the awe-inspiring history of the city, the entire family will enjoy an excursion to
the Appian Way, a 2300-year-old road that is both atmospheric and beautiful all year round. In
the spring the road is lined with wildflowers, and an easy stroll will take you past some of
Rome's most opulent villas and stunning scenery. The picturesque changes that sunsets bring to
the Italian capital are even more dramatic on an early evening walk along the Appian Way.

57

While it may not be suitable for very young children, older ones will appreciate the beauty and
history of the area, while mum and dad can enjoy the romance!
A family trip to Italy's capital can be fashioned into whatever you want it be, and if romance is
on the agenda, the city will not disappoint. From the comfort of a central family hotel, Rome,
with its magnificent sights, alluring atmosphere, rich history and, yes, romance, will provide an
amazing experience for both children and adults.
