The Re-election of Alexis Tsipras
There was a surprising result to the elections that took place in Greece this month. The
Greek voters returned Alexis Tsipras to power on September 20, 2015. Writer Suzanne Daley of
the New York Times wrote about this event in an article named, After Tumult, Greek Voters Give
Alexis Tsipras a Second Chance (2015). In the article, Daley informs the audience about the
events of the election with explanations of why Tsipras was re-elected and through a series of
ethos and logos she is successful in fulfilling her purpose.
In the beginning of the article, Daley uses logos to be informative about the proceedings
of Tsiprass election. She utilizes statistics and gathers it in the second paragraph, With 63
percent of the vote counted, Mr. Tsiprass left-wing Syriza party led with 35.4 percent to 28.3
percent for New Democracy, the main right-leaning party This information creates a clear
indication on who was winning. Daley continues using logos by writing, calling it a close
race for weeks and maintaining that Mr. Tsiprass early popularity was fading. But with more
than 35 percent of the vote, Mr. Tsipras won almost as many parliamentary seats as he had
before. This gives detail of the last election. She rationally states he won as many parliament
seats as before and denotes that he won the election. Daley is exceedingly reasonable and helps
create a clear point to the audience on how Tsipras was elected.
The audience may now be informed about how he was elected but they are not very
knowledgeable on why and in order to tell them, she makes use of ethos in her piece of writing.
She does not relate herself to the audience but relates her audience to other everyday people who

voted for Tsipras. For example, she illuminates that Costas Kapisakis, 64, a retired math teacher,
said, He is much younger, more spontaneous. He is more dynamic, more confident. I am
disappointed about the U-turn, of course. But I still think he is better than the old ways. She
implements this quote effectively as she mentions that age of the man and this can relate to the
people who read the piece. Furthermore, these same people can empathize to why Tsipras was
voted. Along with Kapisakis, Daley identifies Giannis Papadopoulus, 30, and his wife, Maria,
29, said they wanted to give Mr. Tsipras a second chance, too. This expands the audience to
younger adults as it creates a younger peers reasoning to Tsiprass re-election. These two quotes
create an appeal to character, ethos, that supports her intent in writing the report.
The article employs ethos as well as logos productively and creates a well-written and
informed article about the election in Greece. The audience can clearly understand the logic on
how he was voted in and the appeal to character creates the reason on why he was re-elected.
These two elements inform the reader and people of the world that Tsipras was re-elected in a
way that is easy to comprehend for many people.
