COURSE DESCRIPTION (Published in the Choice Book)

This course addresses the structure of atoms, the structure and properties of matter, and the
conservation and interaction of energy and matter. Students will investigate chemistry concepts
through experience in laboratories and field work using the process of inquiry. Prerequisites:

Attendance Regular classroom attendance is imperative. Please make every effort to be in class
every day. If, however, you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to check the assignment board or
the schools website to see what you have missed. Makeups can be completed Thursday after
school. If this time does not work with your schedule, see Mrs. Petty to arrange an alternate time.
Tardies The Mill Creek tardy policy will be strictly enforced. Be on TIME!
Hall Passes Hall passes will only be given in a case of emergency. Students are expected to go
to the restroom, locker, etcin between classes.

Tests/Quizzes Tests will always be announced ahead of time. If you are present the day of the
test, you will be required to take it (any exceptions should be cleared in advance)!
Quizzes/practice tests will be given in every unit. . They may be announced or unannounced. If
you are present the day of the quiz, you will be required to take it. If you are absent, please try to
come in the next morning by 7am to make it up. Some quizzes will be spot checked for accuracy.
When this is done, questions from each major concept will be graded and weighted the same as
on the upcoming exam. Quizzes will be given back the following day therefore, any missed
quizzes will be excused.
Assignments In each unit, there will be approximately 8-12 assignments. You must show
all work, when applicable, to receive credit. Only certain assignments will be collected for a
grade, and it may be announced or unannounced. Use the unit agendas (posted on eclass)
to find homework problems and on-line tutorials.
Late Work Late work will be accepted one date late for a 20% deduction and two five days late
for 50% deduction. If you are late turning in a regular assignment, be prepared for me to redraw
the next day (assignments are randomly collected).
Laboratory This is a lab-based course. Lab safety is of the utmost importance. Any student that
doesnt take lab safety seriously will not be allowed to participate in lab. This includes proper care
and clean up of the lab. Students are required to complete a safety contract before they can
participate in lab. Both the parent and the student must sign the contract. Students are
responsible for following all rules in the safety contract.
Extra Help Stay after school as soon as you experience difficulty. Avoid waiting until the day
before the test to get help. Help sessions will be held every Thursday afternoon immediately
after school. If this time does not work for you, please see Mrs. Petty to schedule an
alternate time.
ABOUT THE GATEWAY EXAM: All students must demonstrate knowledge of the Gwinnett County
Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum. Ninth graders enrolling in 1998-99 and beyond
will need to pass the Gwinnett County Gateway Exam over the AKS before graduation. The
Gateway Exam will measure students ability to write effectively about the science AKS covered in
ninth and tenth grades (biology and chemistry). There will be opportunities to retake the exam if
they are not successful the first time.

***This syllabus is subject to change. If this happens, the change will be announced in class
and an updated syllabus will be posted on eclass.

Safety Contract For High School

As a science student, I will adhere to the following safety rules:

help.
3. Do not perform activities that are unauthorized.
4. Immediately report to the teacher any accident, injury, incorrect
procedure, or damaged equipment.
5. Safety glasses and safety aprons should be worn for any activity indicated.
6. Do not engage in horseplay or any other such actions during a lab activity.
7. Use the safety equipment provided. Know the location of the fire extinguisher,
safety shower, fire blanket, first aid kit and closest administrators office.
8. Any accident that might cause personal injury must be reported to the
teacher. A copy of this accident report will be sent home.
9. An incident report must be filed with county security for any major accident.
A copy of this accident report will be sent home.
10. Place broken glass and waste chemicals in designated containers. Keep
insoluble waste materials out of the sink.
