From 2010 to 2015, West African Examination Council (WAEC)

has recorded poor performance of students in senior WAEC

exams. Out of all these years ie from 2010 to 2015, the best
performance of students was in 2012. In 2012, only 39% of
students obtained a credit in at least 5 subjects including
mathematics and English Language (ie like saying that out of
100 students only 39 passed), and we all know that that is a
poor performance. Now, we all know that irrespective of the
course a person wants to study, it is compulsory that the person
has at least a C ie credit in maths and english.
Some of the causes of this poor performance include:
-- Negative attitude towards these subjects.
-- Anxiety and fear of the subjects, especially mathematics.
-- Poor teaching methods.
Because for every problem there is a solution, solutions have
been proffered to improve the performance of students and
they include:
-- Awakening a CONSCIOUS INTEREST in Mathematics and
English language amongst students right from when they are
infants.
-- Creation of positive attitude towards the subjects (Students
need to stop viewing mathematics or English Language as
either boring or difficult)

-- Administering more test and quizzes (Like they say practice

makes perfect. They more practice you have in a particular
field, the more experienced you are)
-- Use of variety of teaching methods. For example, in
secondary school, if you are being taught equations. And the
teacher says ''X+2=5..find X'' first thing that may come into a
child's mind is, what is X? But X is an alphabet, so how can you
add X and 2 to give 5? Instead of going directly into solving for
X, a teacher could remind the students, first, of primary
mathematics where you had ---- + 2= 5 or Box + 2=5. The dash
or box stands for the number you'll add to 2 to give 5. But as
you begin secondary school, the box or dash is replaced with an
alphabet. So the X or Y or Z has the same function as the dash
or Box, which is that it stands for a number.

In a bid to remedying some of the causes of the poor

performance, a holiday program will be organized. The program
is called MEC class. MEC stands for Mathematics, English
Language and Computer. This class aims at helping students
build a positive attitude towards Mathematics and English
language by using variety of teaching methods like the one i
just demonstrated with X+2=5.
Some of the topics that they will encounter in SS1 will be
taught, in an interactive manner. Assignments and class quizzes
will be carried out to build students' confidence, as practice
makes
The computer class will be a hands-on/practical class.

Students paid other people to type their project work. Some

could not design slides for their seminar presentation and I.T
defence. In the computer class, students will be taught to be
skilled in microsoft word and power point and the internet.)
WHO IS THE MEC CLASS FOR?
The MEC class is for those who have finished their junior waec
and are getting ready to begin SS1.
The venue is Fr Prunty memorial hall.
Time period-- It will begin on 27th June, 2016 to 26th August,
2016.
All those interested, if you'd like your child or children, as the
case may be, to participate in the MEC class, just put down your
details with our people at the 3 major gates of the church. Just
indicate your interst with them. And if you have any questions,
please we will like to answer them.
THANK YOU!
