ATTENDANCE
A students success in school is
greatly dependent upon his/her
attendance. One of the first indicators
of student failure is poor attendance.

Future employers and colleges put

great
emphasis
upon
regular
attendance
and
satisfactory
performance.
It is the students
responsibility to be in school every day
unless he/she has an excusable
reason. While parents may excuse
their childs absence, the school
administration will make the final
determination if credit is given for
school
absence
and
whether
consequences are warranted.
ABSENCE PROCEDURE:
Parent should call (634-1174) or
e-mail the Attendance Office to
leave a message before 8:30 AM
on the day the student is absent;
24-hour notice if it is for an
appointment (see #4 below).
Attendance Office gives student an
admit slip for teachers to list
make-up work and sign.
Students have two days to make up
work for each day of absence.
Term papers, projects, and major
tests announced to the student
BEFORE the absence are ordinarily
due the day the student returns to
school.
No tab for Announcements in ES
Handbook, but probably
Newsletters may cover this
My thoughts are for parents in the
community announcements should be
posted the same way--possibly even a
link on the Main KoMets.k12.mn page
every day that links To the ES, MS or
HS annoucements page???

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Daily announcements concerning the
school
day
and
extracurricular
activities are shared with students after
lunch. These announcements are also
posted in the Commons and on K-Ms
website (www.komets.k12.mn.us) on
the Middle School homepage under
the Office tab.

can we make this consistent time?

Tardiness
All students should be on time for
school in the morning and for all
subsequent class periods. "On time"
means in the assigned room and
seated at the time class is scheduled

ANNOUNCEMENTS & BULLETINS

All notices of club meetings, athletic
and social events, general information
for the day, and specific instructions
are announced over the PA system
each day. The announcements are
also posted on the KoMet web page.
Students responsible for putting
announcements in the daily bulletin
must have their announcements
approved by their advisor and in the
office the preceding day.
TARDINESS POLICY
Any student, for any reason, except
pre-excused
medical
or dental
appointments, who comes to school
after 8:30 a.m., excused or unexcused
by ones parents, will automatically be
ineligible to participate in any
extra-curricular, co-curricular activities
that evening, including games and
practices, class trips, history day, etc.
This includes students who leave for
any illness throughout the day.

to begin. Students who need to go to

lockers or to the lavatory should report
to class first and obtain the teacher's
permission and a pass.

Students who are late for school in

the morning should report to the
office for a pass. The office
personnel will determine if the
tardy is excused or unexcused and
record the tardiness in the student
file. After 3 unexcused tardies,
detention will be assigned.
A student who is detained by a
teacher after class should get a
pass from that teacher to present
to the next teacher.
A student who is tardy for a class
should report directly to that class,
and the teacher will determine
whether the tardy is excused or
unexcused.
In order to qualify for participation
in H.S. level extracurricular
activity, students must be in school
by 8:30 a.m. unless they have
reported a pre-planned absence
such as a doctors appointment.

State testing: there is nothing on the

Elementary attendance policy about
state testing & attendance-do we want
the same message on all three?

students family---on the elementary it

Does ES need a Backpack Policy

statement??

Page 4: Backpack/Handbag policy:

BACKPACK/BAG POLICY
For safety reasons Middle School
students should not carry backpacks,
duffle bags, handbags, purses, or
cinch sacks with them during the
school day.
Students may bring
backpacks/bags to school, however,
the backpacks must be stored in the
student lockers during the school day.
If the backpack/bag does not fit, the
student must empty it or use a different

BACKPACKS
In maintaining a safe school,
backpacks, duffel bags, messenger
bags, etc., will not be allowed in
classrooms or outside student lockers
during the school day.

backpack. Classrooms, hallways and

offices are not acceptable storage
places. Students are allowed time
between classes to stop at their
lockers to collect the books they need
for each class. It is not necessary for
students to carry all books to all
classes.
Should this be consistent in all 3
handbooks? Currently it is not in the
Elementary.
Yellow Card, Green Card, Red Cad
system listed in great detail. This will
vary for each building--my only thought
was on incomplete work
Page 12: Below the Line behaviors:
Incomplete Work is listed--not sure
what this is referring to?
Especially if we are decreasing
homework-and the emphasis on
homework...

Page 8:
HALL & CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR
Order in the hallways and classrooms
are a safety measure. The following
rules should be observed:

Please do not run & keep to the

right.
All students should have a pass if
they are in the hallways during
class periods.
Please do not disturb classes that
are in session while in the hallway.
Please pick up after yourself by
using the trash containers.
PDA (Public Display of Affection)
is not allowed in the hallways,
classrooms or common areas.
PDA includes kissing, hugging &
holding hands.
Use of gang related language,
gestures or colors during school
hours in not allowed.
Narcotics, alcoholic beverages &
other drugs are not allowed on
school grounds. Any medications
students need to take during the
school day should be brought to
the nurses office for dispensation.

Students are expected to board the

buses or walk home immediately after
school is out unless they are involved
in a supervised after-school activity.
Students who need to wait for an
activity to begin may wait in the Middle
School lobby, commons or near the
exit where they will board their activity
bus. Students are not to run in
hallways or disturb classroom areas.
Students who are in the building
unsupervised or who refuse to comply
with directives of school employees
will be asked to leave immediately.

Code of Conduct:
*this describes in length the dos and
donts of classroom behaviors
*this is the only mention of this;
maybe better clarify classroom
behaviors and expectations in all 3
handbooks
Could take this part out then:
CLASSROOM BEHAVIORS
- No food or beverages (other than
water) in classes from 8:00-2:50,
except for planned activities.
- Teacher dismisses students from
class.

*HS handbook is the only one that has

Punishment can include

court appearance.

Page 7: Cell phones, Ipods, Ipads and

other Nuisance Items: we may want to
reword this as we are promoting using
technology in classes and not
punishing it unless used without
permission or against school
rules--may need to reword this in all 3
handbooks. I had to chuckle that
theyre called nuisance
items...George Couros would not like
this statement! LOL
Incomplete Grades
When a student receives an
Incomplete grade, all incomplete work
needs to be made up within two weeks
of the end of the quarter or the grade
will turn to an "F." Students are
ineligible
for
participation
in
extracurricular activities until all
incomplete work is finished and the
teacher has submitted a grade change
to the office. Incompletes are not
permitted at the end of the school
year, unless the principal has granted
permission.

Page 7: Cheating, Plagiarism and

Academic Dishonesty---this is a really
good paragraph--I think this should be
the same in all 3 handbooks.

CHEATING, PLAGIARISM AND

OTHER ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
Academic honesty is expected in
Kasson-Mantorville Schools. Any acts
of academic dishonesty, including
copying another's work, allowing
another to copy work, submitting
material downloaded from the
internet as one's own and plagiarism
of any kind, will be considered
stealing. Parents will be contacted
and
consequences
will
be
determined at the teachers and
principals discretion.
Page 21: Directory or list of names and
pods: Mrs. Gilmore is still listed and
Mrs. Mikkalson is still listed in blue
pod

INCOMPLETES
No incompletes will be given at the
end of a quarter unless approved by
the principal and/or counselor for
extenuating circumstances. In most
cases, the incomplete work must be
turned in within two weeks.

CHEATING
Students are to be responsible for
doing
their
own
work
and
assessments. Learning is the goal for
all students. Examples of cheating
are: plagiarism, not doing your own
assignment/homework, cheating on
tests in any fashion. Each instance of
cheating will be reported to the
principal/designee. Parent(s) will be
contacted by the teacher and credit will
not be given.
