ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO June, 2010

Dear Friends in Christ,

On the weekend of June 12-13, 2010, we will take up a special collection for the
Retired Priests of the Archdiocese.
For many years now, we have relied on our retired priests to celebrate Mass and the sacraments in hundreds
of parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Without their dedicated service, many parishes would
need to reduce the number of Masses celebrated each weekend. Some retired priests are called upon to be tem-
porary administrators of parishes and others fill in to allow pastors some needed time off. Our senior priests do
this willingly as a continuation of the many years that they have faithfully served our Church. Please join me
in offering our retired priests words of appreciation and gratitude for their many years of priestly ministry.
The Priests’ Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. This year, we
have seen the cost of healthcare, prescription drugs, and nursing home care increase. In addition, the priests’
pension fund remains seriously impacted by the economic downturn. This special collection will help us to
continue to support our retired priests. You may be aware that the December collection for retired men and
women Religious is designated to provide only for those in Religious Orders. Archdiocesan priests do not re-
ceive any funds from this collection.
As the “Year for Priests” draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our retired
priests for their exemplary ministry. We are blessed to have more than one hundred retired priests over eighty
years of age, which means that each one has served for more than fifty-five years. May their spirit continue to
enliven our Church!
I am thankful to all of you for your remarkable generosity in this collection last year. I ask you to repeat
your kindness this year. Your donations and your prayers are a great affirmation of our retired priests. Please
pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me
in yours.
Sincerely yours in Christ,

Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I

SCHOOL NEWS
CPL. PHILLIP J. BRODNICK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED
On August 22, 2007, Cpl. Phillip J. Brodnick was killed in Iraq. He gave his life to defend our freedom, and
is a true American hero! In his honor, and to keep his memory alive his Father, Jim, and his wife, Mary and
their daughter Isabella, established a scholarship fund. In addition to three scholarships for seniors from
selected high schools, they decided to award two $500.00 scholarships to the students of St. Albert the
Great School. One scholarship to be awarded to an 8th Grade student going on to a Catholic high school,
and the other to be awarded to a 7th Grade student to continue their education here at St. Albert the
Great School.
The students were asked to write an essay on what their educational goals are. The essays were given to
the Brodnick’s to read and choose the winners. We are very pleased to announce the first winners of the
Cpl. Phillip J. Brodnick Memorial Scholarships are: 8th Grade – Margaret Keane; 7th Grade – Ashley Koll.

An exciting fundraiser based on professional baseball!

BaseballMania begins on June 7, 2010 and runs for the last 17 weeks of the professional baseball season.
A ticket’s value in any given week is determined by the combined scores of the three
baseball teams listed on the back of the ticket for that week. On the back of each BaseballMania ticket, you
will see a different set of 3 teams for each of the 17 weeks of the fundraiser.
Prizes are awarded each week of the fundraiser to the top 4 highest scoring tickets and the 2 lowest scoring
tickets. At the end of the season, tickets with the most and fewest combined points for all weeks win grand
prizes. See the front of your ticket for details on prize money amounts.
A BaseballMania ticket is eligible to win prizes only after the date it has been activated by an
organization on the website.
Winners will be notified by the participating organization that distributed the BaseballMania ticket.
All tickets are unique each week. Each ticket contains a unique set of 3 baseball teams each week of the sea-
son. Keep track of all your ticket stubs!!!
All ticket stubs must be turned in by June 1, 2010 to St. Albert the Great School
or rectory.
Thank you for helping!
On behalf of the entire fundraising team, we would like to thank you for all the time and
effort you are dedicating to help make this BaseballMania fundraiser a success.
