ABSTRACT
Due to the non-linear characteristics and high speed switching of power
electronic equipment various problems created in power systems i.e. pollution issues.
The power quality is severely affected due to presence of harmonics. To solve these
THD problems and for better power quality, Active power filters are used over the
years. In this work to reduce

load current harmonics and for reactive power

compensation shunt active power filter is used. It is a multi-function power

conditioner which can be used to compensate for various voltage disturbance of the
power supply, to correct any voltage fluctuation and to present the harmonic load
current from entering the power system.
In this work PI controller based three-phase shunt active power filter to
compensate harmonics and reactive power by nonlinear load to improve power quality
is implemented for three-phase systems. A MATLAB program has been developed to
simulate the system operation. Different simulation results are presented and
performance of PI controller. Here hysteresis based current control is used for PWM
pattern generation to obtain the switching signals to the voltage sourced PWM
converter.
The problem of cost effective active compensator allocation and sizing in
distribution networks has been analysed. A few objective functions have been
compared from the economical point of view. Theoretical considerations have been
illustrated by an example of active power filters (APF) allocation and sizing by means
of the genetic algorithm.
