PHYSICS

Physics is the science of nature. It is the scientific study of matter and energy and how
they interact with each other. This energy can take the form of motion, light, electricity, radiation,
gravity. Physics deals with matter on scales ranging from sub-atomic particles (i.e. the particles
that make up the atom and the particles that make up those particles) to stars and even entire
galaxies.
Why should one opt for a course in Physics?
Physics is the most fundamental and all-inclusive of the sciences. It has a profound effect
on all scientific development. Physics is the basic to the understanding of almost all branches of
science and technology. The Economists and Commerce experts use the ideas and concepts of
Physics. The intricacies in understanding the concept of basic principles of Physics is relaxed by
bringing in a conceptual coherence between the theory and the Practical session in the syllabi.

Nobel Laureate Albert Einstein says,

If you have a passion for understanding how things work and enjoy scientific
experiments and mathematics, then you should study physics.
Physics owes you excellent and wide range of career opportunities.
The way Physics works
As an experimental science, physics utilizes the scientific method to formulate and test
hypotheses that are based on observation of the natural world. The goal of physics is to use the
results of these experiments to formulate scientific laws, usually expressed in the language of
mathematics, which can then be used to predict other phenomena.

What is the pre requisite for entry?

An entry demands mainly these three essential components
a) A knowledge of the basic Physics Concepts and the technical terms
b) A large amount of simple mathematics
c) An experience in the Physics lab
In order to experience Physics, the world around us is observed in terms of measurable
parameters, for which a mathematics background is absolutely essential.

Richard Feynman says,

The test of Knowledge is Experiment. Experiment is the sole judge of Scientific truth
What do you learn about ?
A course in Physics is an enjoyable and exploring journey through Properties of matter,
Sound, Heat and Thermodynamics, Optics, Electricity and Electromagnetism, Laser Physics and
Spectroscopy, Classical and Quantum Mechanics, Solid State Physics, Electronics and
Communication, Energy Physics, Atomic Physics, Nuclear Physics, Integrated Electronics and
Instrumentation and Programming with Fortran and C.
The subject matter in every paper is based on the scientific method,
Observation, Reason and experiment.
Nobel Laureate, Albert Einstein says,
"In the matter of physics, the first lessons should contain nothing but what is experimental and
interesting to see. A pretty experiment is in itself often more valuable than twenty formulae
extracted from our minds."
The Role of Physics in Science
In a broader sense, physics can be seen as the most fundamental of the natural sciences.
Chemistry, for example, can be viewed as a complex application of physics, as it focuses on the
interaction of energy and matter in chemical systems. We also know that biology is, at its heart,
an application of chemical properties in living things, which means that it is also, ultimately,
ruled by the physical laws.
The benefits of a scientific education can be clearly seen in this description of science by
famed quantum physicist Richard Feynman:
Science is a way to teach how something gets to be known, what is not known, to
what extent things are known (for nothing is known absolutely), how to handle doubt and
uncertainty, what the rules of evidence are, how to think about things so that judgments
can be made, how to distinguish truth from fraud, and from show.

Nature exhibits many forms, matter or a wave or either. The bulk property of matter
exhibiting particle behavior form the basis of Properties of matter. A theoretical knowledge of
music, the basics of the developments in modern sound engineering and the applications of
sound are imparted through Sound.
The ideas of calorie, Specific heat capacities, the thermodynamics of systems are dealt
with Heat and Thermodynamics. Light as a wave exhibits the phenomenon of diffraction,
interference and as a transverse wave polarizes. The relevant theory and the instrument used to
observe or measure them are discussed in Optics. The idea of light quanta is imparted through
Laser and Spectroscopy which forms the basis for almost every analyzing instrument.
The idea of short range forces namely electrostatic force forms the basis for Electricity
where a practical knowledge about the domestic power connection and motor are emphasized.
The movement of electrons in a loop causing a magnetic field and its vice versa are taught in
detail in Electromagnetism which also ponders the magnetic elements of the earth. A transition
from Classical and Quantum World and the need for the same are emphasized through adequate
knowledge of the concepts. The importance of Classical Mechanics for Macroscopic world is
stressed through Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism and , the visualization of a wave
associated with a particle in motion and the notion of wave function, the probability of locating a
particle through its wave functions, their eigen values and functions are discussed in basic
Quantum Mechanics.
Formation of solids, the forces that bind them and many things related to them are
answered by solid state Physics. The application of the flow of electrons through a
semiconductor forms the basis for solid state electronics. Electronics and Communication plays
a leading role in modern communication systems. Energy Physics, the need of the hour, is
immensely useful.
Atomic physics is the scientific study of the structure of the atom, its energy states, and
its interactions with other particles and with electric and magnetic field. Atomic physics has
proved to be a spectacularly successful application of quantum mechanics, which is one of the
cornerstones of modern Physics. While atomic physics deals with atoms as a whole, nuclear
physics deals specifically with the nucleus of the atom.

Nuclear energy now plays a

predominant role as we all know.

Scope of Physics:
A person is sure of improving ones skill set and competence to do any job with
confidence, by choosing Physics in his / her higher studies.

The scope of getting jobs is best assured.

The scope of pursuing research in Physics like the field of Thin films, NANO
Science, Condensed matter Physics, Quantum computing, Non Linear Dynamics,
Molecular Computers, Computational Physics, Astrophysics, Bio Physics, is
another boon for those who choose Physics at their higher education level.

Career Opportunities in Physics:

According to experts, A multi-prolonged, imaginative and innovative approach is the
need of the hour. Physics stimulates the fore said qualities by being the fundamental and
foundation for all scientific inventions. So it has wide range of Career opportunities.
A physicist can

Become a scientist, an experimentalist or a theoretician

Become physicists in industrial or government research and development laboratories, or
