RECOMMENDATION ON HOW TO STOP

SUBSTANCE ABUSE
1. SEEK MENTAL HELP
Mental illness and substance abuse often go handin-hand. Those with a mental illness may turn to
drugs as a way to ease the pain. Those suffering
from some form of mental illness, such as anxiety,
depression or post-traumatic stress disorder should
seek the help of a trained professional for
treatment before it leads to substance abuse.
2. EXAMINE THE RISK FACTORS
If youre aware of the biological, environmental and
physical risk factors you possess, youre more

likely to overcome them. A history of substance

abuse in the family, living in a social setting that
glorifies drug abuse and/or family life that models
drug abuse can be risk factors.
3. Keep a well-balanced life
. People take up drugs when something in their life
is not working, or when theyre unhappy about
their lives or where their lives are going. Look at
lifes big picture, and have priorities in order.

EFFECTS OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE ON THE

INDIVIDUAL, FAMILY AND SOCIETY
THE INDIVIDUAL
The use of drugs, even if it may seem to be
pleasurable in any way has a lot of detrimental
effects on the individual using it. Normally, it leads
to death if not maintained. Drugs can damage
almost any and every part of your body. From your
cells, to your organs to the BRAIN. Some people
take drugs mostly to help their situation, maybe if

theyre very depressed. For example: if a family

member/friend which was very close to them
passed away. Drugs can totally dismantle your
brain. How you think, how you do certain things,
how you talk, how you walk, just name it, it
damages it.
THE FAMILY
It can cause everyone else in the family to engage
in the use of drugs, especially if the victim of the
drug abuse are the parents or a parent. It can
cause fatal diseases for the family member who
dont smoke (second hand smoke). It can also
cause the breaking apart of the family, drugs
makes you do crazy things. You may have done
something hurtful to a member of the family while
under the spell of a drug. Your constant use of
drugs may give your family a bad name and
everyone else who engages in anything with you.
Your family member may be ashamed to call u
their relative, because of the insults they get.
Causing your relationship with your family
members to slowly come to an end.

THE SOCIETY

It causes people to look at you as someone who is

always under a spell of a drug. Someone whos
never conscious of what he/she is doing at any
place or time. As a result people wont feel
comfortable approaching you, causing you to have
less friends. Or no friends at all. Sometimes the
only friends that you do have is the people who are
in the same situation that youre in.
