PREFACE/INTRODUCTION
TO THIS REVIEW EDITION
This E-book is a journey into the mastery of the Game of International Draughts based on rules as
played here in Nigeria and Other African Countries. It is a complete system. The bedrock of this
System is the DEFENCE FORMATION on the one hand and the ATTACK LINE on the other.
The system gives you a STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS through arrow representation of the moves
on the various ways to SYNERGIZE BOTH FORMATIONS TO PLAY VARIOUS TRAPS OR
TO TAKE THE NEEDED ADVANTAGE TO WIN. This is done by showing you step movements of the champion (i.e. The Player with the Black Seed) giving an expose on his system.
Notes and comments are added where necessary for further explanation.
This Review Edition is meant to serve two purposes, viz
1.

As a promotional material that reviews the original work: The A to Z of Draughts Game
An E-book (Parts 1 to 3).

2.

As a learning material for players of the Game.

INTRODUCTION
(of the Original Work)
You are welcome to THE A TO Z OF DRAUGHTS GAME(An E-book) which is a COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF THE STEPS AND SYSTEM OF PLAY OF A DRAUGHTS
CHAMPION. This system of play is what he called: THE DEFENCE FORMATION AND
ATTACK LINE SYNCHRONIZATION METHODS OR THE SYNERGY OF THE DEFENCE FORMATION AND THE ATTACK LINE SEEDS The book which we sometimes
called Draughts GameStep Movement Secrets is a detailed study of this method in all ramification of a draughts champion who has asked us to keep his identity anonymous.
During the period of this study, (a six year period) we were able to compile three volumes of this
champion system. These volumes are The A to Z of Draughts Game Volume 1 to 3 and they
comprises of a lot of full games of this champion. The Three volumes are made up of 923 pages
in total and 1,839 games of this champion system of play.
The Challenge of this e-book therefore, is to select from these vast materials, games in their various forms that will adequately convey to players the necessary lessons needed to make them see
the game from different perspective so as to comprehend the link between all the chapters and understand this unique system of the draughts champion. Another issue we contended with was
where to start to showcase a particular game to meaningfully teach players a particular system,
since most of the games in our vast materials to choose from are full games.
We have tried and we believe that the places we have started from will convey the essence of each
game. We have also added our commentaries/notes on some games presented to simplify the
games to the bearest minimum for easy understanding. Others are self-explanatory, so no notes
were necessary. This E-Book The A to Z of Draughts GameAn E-Book comprises of Three
(3) parts. This volume is the Part One of Three.
The pages of the three parts of the e-book are 187 pages each making a total of 561 pages that
deals with this system of play. This series is a priceless treasure to those who apply its techniques
and ideas. To just read without practical application is to miss the crucial point. Mastery does not
come unless action is taken.
One fact that players should know is that the possible number of combinations of play on a
draughts board is in excess of a trillion combinations. If you are privileged enough to study the
lives of established champions of the game, you will discover that they depended upon a large collection of materials on the game these included but are not limited to Books on the Game, Tapes to
mention but a few. This helps them tremendously in the association of ideas from what they had
learnt and what they have watched champions play during the course of their learning experience
and during playing. Their large appetite for learning vast materials is the reason why they are
champions today. This series on The A to Z of Draughts Game - An E-Book is meant to provide
players vast material on the game to help them in their learning process.
The purpose of this series is to cater for the needs of all categories of players true to the title of the
book which is The A TO Z OF DRAUGHTS GAME. Hence players will find that this volume
is very comprehensive laced with very simple, technical and advanced games. Some players think
that to be a great champion of Draughts game, you must reach a stage whereby you start playing
great or fanciful traps which in the local parlance is called Araga. We beg to disagree with this
notion. This e-book is aimed at giving players a good foundation of draughts game, teaching them
the correct step movements and teaching them some principles of the game thereby allowing them
to have a synergy between their Defence Formation and the Attack Line position for them to play
all manners of traps.

The games in this e-book requires study, thought and final application. These games has stood the
test of time. They are practical and are frequently occurring combinations. No reader or player
who has gone through these works emerges unchanged. The reader/player emerges from these
pages with a firmer grasp of his moves, a clearer vision of the path to Victory.
Since this book is meanly to teach STEP MOVEMENT, we chose to represent the movement with
arrows (both the champion movement and the challengers step movement) are in sequence to
make for better and easy understanding which will eventually end up with the champion (Player
with the Black Seed) playing a TRAP or GOOD STEP TO TAKE THE ADVANTAGE.
This E-book is arranged in such a way that a player with any noticed weakness in his play could
easily go to the Chapter/Section that talked about these inadequacies to learn that lesson. To help
with this, players just need to go to the Table of Content to find what he/she is looking for.
At various stages in the book, we are going to present some full games of the champion to show
from the beginning to the end, THE STEP SEQUENCE OF THE CHAMPION that eventually end
up in a trap or advantage for him, so that players will have a feel of the champions full games.
This will give players an insight on how he thinks with the aim of giving us the needed guide to
playing very good steps.
This logical sequence of steps apart from showing us very good positional play also most times
leads to the execution of various traps. The book is a natural flow of steps to traps.
Players will notice that in the games, there is always a BALANCE between the left side and the
right side for most traps to work i.e. THE SYNERGY OF THE DEFENCE FORMATION
AND THE ATTACK LINE SEEDS.
This book help players to know how to play their games to achieve that balance.
NOTE:
TO JUST STUDY ONLY ONE PART OF THIS SERIES OF ONE (1) TO THREE (3) IS TO
MISS THE TREMENDOUS LESSONS OF THE OTHER PARTS. THE THREE (3)
PARTS OF THIS E-BOOK IS WHAT MAKES UP THE COMPLETE SYSTEM OF THE
DRAUGHTS CHAMPION WHICH IS REPRESENTED THROUGHOUT ALL THE 3
PARTS BY THE PLAYER WITH THE BLACK SEED.

CHOOSING THE TOPIC FOR EACH CHAPTER

What we have done here is to capture an aspect of the game that we feel is prominent to that game
and name the Chapter after it. This will also help players to easily make reference to any chapter
they fill they are deficient in and study to correct that weakness.
Take the first Chapter for example. We named it the DEFENCE FORMATION Game but when
you follow the techniques critically, you will discover that the ATTACK LINE (THIS IS TREATED IN CHAPTER TWO) also play key roles in all the games. So it is in ALL THE GAMES OF
THE BOOK, you will notice the RIGHT TO LEFT OR LEFT TO RIGHT FLOW OR BALANCE.

SECTION ONE
THE DEFENCE FORMATION GAMES
We are presenting to you throughout this book, the SEQUENCE OF STEPS THAT UNRAVEL
THE UNIQUE SYSTEM OF DRAUGHTS GAME by a draughts champion as PLAYED
THROUGHOUT THE BOOK BY THE PLAYER WITH THE BLACK SEED. He refer to his
system of play as THE DEFENCE FORMATION AND ATTACK LINE SYNCRONIZATION METHODS or THE SYNERGY OF THE DEFENCE FORMATION AND ATTACK LINE. In the sections named PITFALLS the Champion deliberately played wrong
moves to point out the pitfalls in the particular topic under review.
We have noticed upon critical review of the numerous research materials in our possession, that
the champion dutifully follows a set pattern/formation in all his step movements. First of this is
what he called his Defence Formation. The defence formation is very simple to form and maintain as will be seen in the course of this chapter. The defence formation in its various forms is the
architect to achieving so many traps as will be revealed. We will talk about all you need to know
about the defence formation. Since we are showcasing the DRAUGHTS SYSTEM of this champion, the best way for players to appreciate and understand what we are trying to teach them, is to
from time to time during the course of this book present full games of the champion and make
comments to highlight some lessons he is trying to convey to players to make them thoroughly
understand the games and to enable you play your games from all angles.
Let us begin here with some lessons highlighting some things to note thereafter we will present a
full game to highlight more points.

LESSON 1: The seeds are arranged and the game is about to

start. As a player when playing
this particular system, what is
worth knowing according to the
draughts champion, is the Defence
Formation and the Attack Position
in the board.
Formation is simply the act of
forming something in a particular
arrangement or pattern. In the case
of draughts game, it is the act of
playing your seed(s) to form a particular pattern.
The next diagram highlights the defence formation and the attack formation (positions).

LESSON 2: As labeled in the diagram, it clearly shows, blacks DEFENCE FORMATION and the position it ALWAYS OCCUPY, i.e. on
the right hand side of the board and
forming an X on the board as the
diagram shows. Likewise it also
shows blacks ATTACKING FORMATION and the position it ALWAYS OCCUPY, i.e. on the upper
double corner line (diagonal) on the
left hand side of the board.

LESSON 3: This diagram shows

a full game situation. We believe
players can easily see his DEFENCE FORMATION and the
POSITIONS. Same for his ATTACK FORMATION and the
position on the draughts board.
Players can also easily identify
whites DEFENCE and ATTACK
FORMATIONS and POSITIONS.

For your opponent, we have also

shown you his ATTACKING POSITON and his DEFENCE POSITION
AND FORMATION.

THE DEFENCE FORMATION GAMES

LESSON 7:
Black knowing that Whites attack formation is set (which he could use to
scatter blacks defence) he (Black) did not move this seed at the top (front) of
the lower double corner to the central line. (As in game diagram 6) to prevent White from giving him his seed so that there will be an exchange of
seeds with the hope of scattering Blacks defence formation.

Even if White Plays number 2 as in the diagram with the hope of scattering
Blacks defence, Black still has control of his defence.

WE HEREUNDER PRESENT VARIOUS FORMATIVE STAGES OF THE DEFENCE FORMATION

FORMATION 1:
Games 2 to 7 deals with this formation. Note that these are games in
the formative stages of the full defence formation. (See Lesson 6 Explanation for this formation).

SECTION FIVE
THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE DEFENCE FORMATION GAMES (THE OTHER
FORMS OF THE DEFENCE FORMATION)
Draughts Game is a dynamic one and as such, the Defence Formation does not maintain a specific
form. This section deals with that dynamism by presenting some full games whereby the movement of the steps detailing the transformation of the Defence Formation to other forms are shown
in details to assist players during the course of their games.
This Transformation occurs on the Defence Formation Side of the Board i.e. On the Right Hand
Side of the board.
In this Section we will present to you how this transformation occur and some games/traps associated with this transformation.
Also note that in order not to REPEAT games/traps, we will refer you to Chapters or Sections
where the Defence Transformation occur and is treated in-depth that is why a whole chapter(s) are
assigned to it.
The Chapter/Section where players will find the DEFENCE FORMATION TRANSFORMATION
are:

SECTION EIGHT

THE AGGRESSIVE ATTACK

CONTINUES
WITH
THE CRAB ATTACK

SECTION EIGHT
THE AGGRESSIVE ATTACK CONTINUES WITH THE CRAB ATTACK
We shall continue the Aggressive Attack Games with what we called The Crab Attack which is
a strategy to take an advantage. The Crab is a system of play whereby Black cut or plays to occupy position 22. This Black one seed will be holding Whites two seeds at position 11 and
21 (Source: The Key Strategy of Draughts Game - Page 5).
The diagram below will make these positions very clear.

Using the Draughts Notation, these are

The positions of the seeds on the
draughts board.
Position 11
Position 21
Position 22

(The Crab Attack)

In Section Seven, The position that the aggressive seed move up to is also position 22 of the board.
As earlier mentioned in Section Seven, also, the Crab Attack will be able to immobilise two (2) or
more of your opponents seeds. If you are able to use one of your seed to hold two of your opponents seed, the game is as good as won because Draughts is a game of numbers and space.
We had also mentioned that, your aggressive seed in front when not well protected, will be captured free of charge. In this section, we are going to present various situations whereby your opponents attempt is to capture or eat-up that aggressive (Crab) seed free and the various games or
traps you could use to take the advantage and eventually win the games.
Players should diligently study these games. They will at once discover that the games presented
here are frequently occurring and so their knowledge of them will prove very useful in building
their proficiency in the game.

NOTE
YOUR AGGRESSIVE SEED (FRONT SEED) WHEN NOT WELL
PROTECTED BECOMES A FREE FOOD FOR YOUR
OPPONENT THAT WILL EVENTUALLY LEAD TO YOUR LOSS.

CHAPTER THREE
THE OKUBOSE GRIP POSITION
GAMES

CHAPTER THREE
THE OKUBOSE GRIP POSITION GAMES
The name Okubose Grip is in tribute to a great Draughts Champion known famously as
Okubose who had perfected this Grip that opponents are left helpless in his Grip when in contest
with him. The Okubose Grip when used effectively is capable of rendering your opponent immoveable thereby giving you the opportunity to Win.
The Okubose Grip is also known as the Two Seed(s) Grip. The Okubose Grip (The Two Seed
(s) Grip is formed when a player move or cut from the Attack Line to Position 26 of the Draughts
Board and remains there (using that spot (position 26) as a strategic position to hold the opponent).
It is only when necessary that he will move to corner at position 21. The Player stays at the Position 26 to form a Grip against the opponent. This chapter will show you how to use that Grip in
conjunction with other seeds movement to strategically put your opponent in a tight spot and make
the necessary moves and traps to win. We will also show players/readers some traps that they
should expect to use when they are forming the Okubose Grip.
The Okubose Grip (Two Seed(s) Grip) is shown below:

(This is just an illustration. It is

not a game)

The Okubose Grip on the Position 26 of the Draughts Board.

THIS CHAPTER IS DIVIDED INTO THREE SECTIONS AND WE WILL DISCUSS THE
FOLLOWING TOPICS:
SECTION
ONE -

YOUR FORMING THE OKUBOSE GRIP (THE VARIOUS TRAPS AND

GOOD STEPS)

TWO -

YOUR MISSTEP THAT ALLOWS YOUR OPPONENT TO GO IN FOR THE

OKUBOSE GRIP POSITION.

THREE- YOUR ATTACK ON YOUR OPPONENTS OKUBOSE GRIP.

SECTION ONE
YOUR FORMING THE OKUBOSE GRIPTHE VARIOUS TRAPS AND GOOD STEPS.
In Part One of this E-Book series, we had discussed the Attack Line and the various games to use
were presented.
To form the Okubose Grip, players normally move or cut their seed from the Attack Line upwards
to the Okubose Grip Position (i.e. Position 26 of the Draughts Board). In forming the Okubose
Grip, there are so many situations or things to consider before you go for the Okubose Grip. In
this Section, we are going to discuss or show you what to look out for before you go in for the
Okubose Grip which is sometimes referred to as The Two (2) Seed(s) Grip.
NOTE: WE HAVE ALSO INCLUDED SOME SIMPLE TRAPS FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE
BEGINNERS. IF ANY GAME IS SIMPLE FOR YOU. SIMPLY PROCEED TO THE NEXT
GAME.
The various games presented in this section will give you lots of options to use when planning.
Game 1 (Diagram A)
In this game, you have completed your Defence Formation. Your Attack Line seed is in place.
When your opponent now plays #3, (See diagram A below). It has created a possible trap in this
game. To play the possible trap, Black now uses his #4 seed on the Attack Line to cut by giving
Whites #5 seed in order to use #6 to advance to form the Okubose Grip. You may be wondering!
How is that a trap? (Go to Diagram B).
Diagram B
The general tendencies of majority
of players who are not experienced
is that when your opponent cut in
such situation, their next move is to
immediately move from their upper
double corner to the central line
(viewing from Blacks point of
view on the Board). Take this diagram for example, when White
move from the upper double corner
to occupy the central line, as #1 in
the diagram shows, The Trap is set
for you to play.

SECTION THREE
YOUR ATTACK ON YOUR OPPONENTS OKUBOSE GRIP
In this section, we are going to present a situation whereby your opponent this time is using the
Okubose Grip against you. We will show you with variety of games, what moves/missteps from
him or situations to look out for in order to dislodge him from his hold and to put him under pressure so that you will take the advantage or play a trap against him.

This is just an illustration. It is not a game.

Your opponent is
using the Okubose
Grip (The Two Seed
(s)) Grip on you.

We will begin this section with a full game showing once again the STEP MOVEMENT(S) of the
Champion (Black Seed). Recall that the aim of this e-book is basically to teach players the direction of the best steps in the course of their games. The traps that come at the end of most of the
games is just an added bonus to quickly finish the battle against the opponent.

NOTE
WHEN YOU COME TO A GAME THAT IS SIMPLE AND
WHICH YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH, THE BEST THING TO
DO IS TO SIMPLY PROCEED TO THE NEXT GAME. THAT
WAY YOU WILL DERIVE MAXIMUM BENEFIT FROM THIS
BOOK AND FINISH IT IN GOOD TIME.

CHAPTER SEVEN
WHEN YOUR OPPONENT CUT THE HEAD OF YOUR DEFENCE
FORMATION (OR ATTACKING YOU FROM THE RIGHT WING)
When your opponent cut the Head of your Defence Formation are games whereby your opponent
is attacking you through your right hand side (or what some draughts players called the right wing)
or passing through the central line.
Recall that in part 1 (Chapter One) of this e-book, we made you to understand that the draughts
board is structured in such a way that the central line is the strongest part of the board to pass
through to crown (notwithstanding this information, some players still take that route maybe they
have the techniques they could use or because they do not have the knowledge we just disclosed to
you). While the double corner is the weakest link to pass through to crown.
We also made you to understand that is the reason why this champion system of play, he usually
move his steps movements to the double corner position to always strengthen that side and at the
same time provide the Attack Line move seeds to sustain his attack on the opponent.
See the illustration below:

CHAPTER TEN
CALLING
(OR)
ALLOWING
YOUR OPPONENT TO CROWN
GAMES

CHAPTER TEN
CALLING (OR) ALLOWING YOUR OPPONENT TO CROWN GAMES
In Draughts Game there are different ways whereby you could call or allow your opponent to
crown on your backline. There are also different points on your backline where to call your opponents to. This chapter teaches you the different ways to call or allow your opponent to the different points.
Calling or Allowing your opponent to crown are techniques you employ during the course of a
game whereby you allow or call your opponent to crown into any of the five (5) points of your
backline i.e. Point One (1) which is the central line (Single Corner), (Longest Line diagonal); Point
Two (2) which is the Equilibrium Line (This is the line immediately beneath the central Line).;
Point Three (3) which is the Middle Point of the backline (This is sometimes called the Mid-point
or Keeper Spot); Point Four (4) which is the point immediately beneath the lower double corner,
and Point Five (5) which is the Lower Double Corner itself.
Calling or Allowing your opponent to any of the Five (5) points on your backline is used as a
springboard to either enter your own crown or take the advantage.
This chapter like other chapters is very important when you master the various games that we will
present. In order to simplify the various process whereby you call or allow your opponent to
crown and to make it easily understood, we have arranged the games in a logical sequence whereby all games are classified or arranged from Point 1 to 5 accordingly. For example, all games
whereby you allow or call your opponent to crown at the central line (Point 1) are put together for
you to see the various methods to call your opponent to that point in order to take advantage and
so on.

NOTE
PLEASE NOTE THAT EVEN THOUGH THIS CHAPTER IS
TALKING ABOUT CALLING YOUR OPPONENT TO
CROWN, YOU HAVE TO ALWAYS STUDY THE ROLE
YOUR DEFENCE FORMATION AND ATTACK LINE PLAY
IN ALL THE GAMES.
We are now going to show you the different methods to use to call or allow your opponent to be
in any of the five (5) points mentioned above.

CALLING OR ALLOWING YOUR OPPONENT TO CROWN ON THE CENTRAL LINE (POINT 1)

CHAPTER ELEVEN
THE MIDDLE OF THE BOARD
GAMES
OR
(THE MIDDLE ATTACK)

CHAPTER ELEVEN
THE MIDDLE OF THE BOARD GAMES OR (THE MIDDLE ATTACK)
The Middle of the Board Games in draughts otherwise known as Mid-board games when mastered is the very key to overpowering your opponent. As in midfield in a football game, the player
that controls the middle of the board will generally do better. The real-centre of the draughts
board should be the players main focus to dominate or control at all times. This is because controlling the centre exerts maximum pressure on the opponent (Source: The Key Strategies of
Draughts Game). The pressure exerted on your opponent forces him to play wrong moves. This
chapter is therefore devoted to teaching you and showing you numerous options with a view to
mastering this all important aspect of the game of draughts.
This is the area where the battle with your opponent is intense so every move must be cautiously
applied. What this chapter brings to you are lots of games whereby all the possibilities in the middle attack of a game are treated so that you will have all options you need to have the highest
chance of winning at every point in time.
You will also notice that this is one of the longest chapter in this e-book because our aim is to
touch nearly all aspects of the middle board games or the middle attack since this is the fiercest
part of the battle in a game.

This Chapter is divided into four sections viz:

SECTION ONE:
WHEN YOUR OPPONENT MOVE OR CUT HIS CENTRAL LINE SEED FORWARD OR
UPWARD.
SECTION TWO:
MORE MIDDLE TRAPS AND GRIPS
SECTION THREE:
ADVANCE MIDDLE GAME AND ATTACK LINE COMBINATION FORMATION/TRAPS
SECTION FOUR:
TRAPS AGAINST YOUR OPPONENTS MIDDLE ATTACK.

SECTION TWO
MORE MIDDLE TRAPS AND GRIPS
To increase players options during the course of their games, we are going to use this section to
bring numerous middle traps and grips to enable players learn more techniques in the middle of the
board. As earlier stated, the middle of the board games are the key to overpowering your opponent. The ideas behind Blacks moves in his step movement and the various traps should be thoroughly studied to give you a direction on how to play the middle traps and grips with the aim of
increasing your options when planning with the highest chance of winning at every move of your
seed(s). The games started with some very simple steps/traps for the benefit of the beginners
before progressing to the more advanced or technical games. Endeavour to thoroughly master
these steps/traps to make your moves easy in the middle of the pack.

CHAPTER TWELVE
THE PURPOSE OR USEFULNESS
OF THE TOP LEFT HAND CORNER
SEED

CHAPTER TWELVE
THE PURPOSE OR USEFULNESS OF THE TOP LEFT HAND CORNER SEED
In this chapter, we are going to look at situations whereby the champion, move to corner at the left
hand side (left wing) to use that seed at the corner as the catalyst to play his trap and win the game.
Some players consider moving to corner be it on the left side or right side as a weak move, but in
these games presented, the corner seed is a MUST to engineer the various traps presented.
The diagram below shows Black seed at the top left hand side corner position.

Our focus is the work of

this top left hand side
corner seed.

In the above diagram, you will see that the Champion (Black seed) has three (3) of its seeds at the
corner position. In this chapter, our focus or concern is the work of the top corner seed.
When you study all the games we have presented, you will see that it is very easy to understand
why Black moves to corner on the left side (left wing) or why Black moved to the ropes to
achieve his traps, and will be easily applicable in your games when playing.

The various games presented in this chapter will throw more light
on the duties of the top Left Hand Corner seed and how to use it
to your advantage. The games will give you lots of ideas to use
against your opponent.

CHAPTER
FOURTEEN
THE BACKLINE TRAPS

CHAPTER FOURTEEN
THE BACKLINE TRAPS
As the name implies, these are games or traps whereby after all your exchanges in the course of
the trap, you will at last use the seed at the Backline (mostly the centre seed of your backline to
execute the trap) i.e. To be used to capture your opponents seeds to take the advantage and eventually win.
See the diagram below for an illustration of the Backline.

Your seed at the centre of

the backline.

The Backline traps or games, like any other game in this system of play throughout this e-book
follows the various rules of the Defence Formation and the Attack Line that we had learnt in their
various forms.
The games we are going to present will show us the various moves that Black made in order to
execute the various Backline traps. Most of the Backline traps are executed from the centre of the
Backline. Others that are NOT executed from the centre are also presented so that you (players)
will take advantage of any situation that present itself during the course of a game.

The Backline Trap is also referred to as The King or

Crown Line Traps
because when your opponents seed reaches any spot on the backline, that
seed is crowned King or has reached Crown.
