October 2016: Welcome Back Snowbirds

Volunteers in Many Essential Roles
In a few short weeks, nearly 100 volunteers will be headed to
our annual Rainbow Trails bereavement camp for children.
Volunteers have many essential roles - from leading
activities and games, to cooking and organizing the dining
hall, and assisting with camp registration. We couldnt help
heal these little hearts without your help! Thank you for
everything you do.
Warm Regards,
Samira K. Beckwith, Hope President and CEO

Infection Control Update

Complimentary Flu Shots for Volunteers
Influenza, or the flu, is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization or even
death. In the healthcare industry, this can create a vicious cycle. Infected patients
could pass the flu to uninfected staff or volunteers. Alternatively, any staff or
volunteers who are already infected with the flu are at risk of passing it on to
uninfected patients, who are often more susceptible than the general population,
which could start the cycle over again.
The best way to protect against the flu is to receive the annual flu vaccine. While
flu season peaks from December to February, it actually begins in October.
Hope is once again providing complimentary flu shots for all of our staff
members, volunteers, and household family members (including children 9 and
older or weighing at least 65 pounds). If you have Medicare, please provide that
information, so Hope can be reimbursed for the cost.
Our Occupational Health Department will travel
to multiple Hope locations during our regular
business hours. They are also providing the vaccine
on a limited number of Saturdays and evenings.
To schedule an appointment, please contact your
Volunteer Coordinator.
Note: Hope does not carry the high dose vaccine which may be recommended
for those age 65 and older. We only offer the regular dose of the flu vaccine.
Check with your physician to determine which vaccine is appropriate for you.

Keeping an accurate monthly count of volunteer hours
Speeding up processing time from two weeks to a few days
Reducing paperwork and mailing costs

completing an electronic progress note. If you dont have a Resource ID, contact
your volunteer coordinator. Then, follow these simple steps:

Scroll to the bottom of the page
Click the button for the progress note you need: Patient Care or Other Activity

You can still use the paper progress notes,
but we hope youll enjoy this new system!

News and Events

Volunteers Sew for Rainbow Trails
Volunteers at Hope and at American House in Bonita Springs spent several
hours creating beautiful items for our campers this year. Cozy blankets and
useful bags will help make their time at camp feel more like home. We are
grateful to everyone who helped with this heartfelt project!

Important Reminder: Hope Hospice House Feeding

Hope staff members are responsible for bringing food trays to the rooms in the
Hospice Houses. They will review trays for dietary restrictions. Our staff will
also reposition individuals in bed for the best possible set up. At this point,
volunteers can assist with feeding. Its important to follow this process to ensure
the health and safety of those in our care.
In Memorium
Hope Volunteer and ShellPoint resident Carol Palermo passed
away on September 4, 2016. Carol was a retired nurse who began
volunteering for Hope in 2002. She provided many types of assitance
for the individuals in our care. She will be missed.

POW/MIA Recognition Day

On September 16, volunteers for Hopes VALOR program created a unique display
at Hope Hospice House Cape Coral. The Missing Man table was set up in the
Caf, and a grouping of red, white, blue and black balloons helped to highlight
this area. The custom cake also served to mark the significance of this memorial.
POW/MIA Recognition Day is held on the third Friday of every September, in
remembrance of veterans who were prisoners of war or missing in action.

Providing More than Food at Hope Connections

In July, our Hope Connections office received a very concerned call from the
local Area Agency on Aging. A homeless senior was living in a van, and there
were reports that he wasnt eating.
On the same day, our case manager
Ruby was able to find his location,
and they met at the side of the road.
We were able to provide a cooler full
of ice, water, juice and milk as well
as hot meals and some shelf stable
food items. Hope Connections staff
continued to provide hot meals daily
while getting to know this special
person.
Although he was very reluctant to accept assistance at first, Ruby established a
personal connection during the meal deliveries always delivered by the side
of the road. With that new foundation of trust, the senior reached out to local
housing entities and began working with the homeless program to transition to
more permanent housing.
Hunger is often a symptom of more complicated problems, but the simple act of
providing food can build a relationship that can lead to life-changing solutions.

Volunteer Department Update

New Team Members
Julie Golden joined Hope in February 2016 and is now the Volunteer Coordinator
for the Community Center, working with volunteers who visit local facilities.
Julie chose Hope because she wanted to be part of an organization where she
could be of service to those in need.
Tony Zuniga, formerly an Enrollment Specialist at Hope, is now the
Adminstrative Assistant for the HealthPark reception desk. Although Tony is a
native of New York City, his family was originally from Guatemala, and he also
speaks Spanish. He left New York to avoid the snow and enjoy sunny Florida!
Please join us in giving a warm welcome to both Julie and Tony.
