Matthew 1:1 1:25

Opening prayer
Opening
Ok here we go, over the next few months well be looking
at the first of the four books of the New Testament also
know as the Gospels. The first three also know as synoptics
From the time of the Old Testament to the time of the New
Testament, there was some 400 years.
This 400 year period is marked by the thought that God did
not speak to man daring this time.
From the last prophecy of Malachi to the advent of Christ
coming.
Although this time is thought to be silent or no inspired
prophets from God, there was much going on in the
preparation for the come of the Christ.
#1-17 Concerning this genealogy of our Saviour, observe the chief intention. It is not a needless
genealogy. It is not a vain-glorious one, as those of great men often are. It proves that our Lord Jesus is of
the nation and family out of which the Messiah was to arise. The promise of the blessing was made to
Abraham and his seed; of the dominion, to David and his seed.
It was promised to Abraham that Christ should descend from him, #Ge 12:3; 22:18
|; and to David that he should descend from him, #2Sa 7:12; Ps 89:3, &c.; 132:11|;
and, therefore, unless Jesus is a son of David, and a son of Abraham, he is not the Messiah. Now this is
here proved from well-known records.
When the Son of God was pleased to take our nature, he came near to us, in our fallen, wretched condition;
but he was perfectly free from sin: and while we read the names in his genealogy, we should not forget how
low the Lord of glory stooped to save the human race.

The writer, author

Matthew , meaning the gift of Yahweh
His Jewish name was Levi,

Matthew was a employee of the Roman government as a

tax collector, a profession bitterly hated by the people
because of the personal profit and political corruption
involved with the job.
Matt. 9:9 Matthews calling by Jesus.
It is thought that Matthew probably died a natural death,
there is some thought that he my have died as a martyr.
Title
Given by the early church,
the Gospel According to Matthew, with the word Gospel
meaning good news
Written to
The book of Matthew was especially for the immediate
audience of Jews. Although it is not just meant for the Jew
but or the Gentile also, but many of the things in the book
relate to the Jewish understanding.
Date of writing
It is thought the book of Matthew was writing in 58 A.D.
being the first of the Gospel to be put to pen and paper.
Purpose and theme
The main purpose of Matthews writing was to show Jesus
as King of the promised Kingdom,
And to show that the Lord of the Christian was the Messiah
of the Jew, the King of the promised kingdom.
With some 93quotations of the Old Testament in Matthews
writings.

The first three maybe four chapters of Matthew are the set
up or preparation of Jesus and the world for the minatory of
Jesus.
Matthew 1:1 1:25
The genealogy of Jesus. (1-17)
An angel appears to Joseph. (18-25)
NLT

Matthew 1:1 This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a

descendant of King David and of Abraham:
2
Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac was the father of Jacob. Jacob was the
father of Judah and his brothers.
3
Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah (their mother was Tamar) Gen 38.
Perez was the father of Hezron. Hezron was the father of Ram. 1
4
Ram was the father of Amminadab. Amminadab was the father of Nahshon.
Nahshon was the father of Salmon.
5
Salmon was the father of Boaz (his mother was Rahab) Joshua 6:17. Boaz
was the father of Obed (his mother was Ruth). Obed was the father of Jesse.
6

Jesse was the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon (his
mother was Bathsheba, the widow of Uriah) 2 Samuel 11:3.
7
Solomon was the father of Rehoboam. Rehoboam was the father of Abijah.
Abijah was the father of Asaph.1
8
Asaph was the father of Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat was the father of
Jehoram.1 Jehoram was the father2 of Uzziah.
9
Uzziah was the father of Jotham. Jotham was the father of Ahaz. Ahaz was the
father of Hezekiah.
10
Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh. Manasseh was the father of Amos. 1
Amos was the father of Josiah.
11

Josiah was the father of Jehoiachin1 and his brothers (born at the time of the
exile to Babylon).
12
After the Babylonian exile: Jehoiachin was the father of Shealtiel. Shealtiel
was the father of Zerubbabel.
13
Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud. Abiud was the father of Eliakim. Eliakim
was the father of Azor.
14
Azor was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Akim. Akim was the
father of Eliud.
15

Eliud was the father of Eleazar. Eleazar was the father of

Matthan. Matthan was the father of Jacob.

4
16

Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary.

Mary was the mother of Jesus, who is called the Messiah.
17
All those listed above include fourteen generations from
Abraham to King David, and fourteen from David's time to
the Babylonian exile, and fourteen from the Babylonian exile
to the Messiah.
At this point its important to point out that right here in verse 16 Joseph is know
as Marys husband not Jesus father.
#18-25 Let us look to the circumstances under which the Son of God entered into this lower world, till we
learn to despise the vain honours of this world, when compared with piety and holiness.
The mystery of Christ's becoming man is to be adored, not curiously inquired into.
It was so ordered that Christ should partake of our nature, yet that he should be pure from the defilement of
original sin, which has been communicated to all the race of Adam. Observe, it is the thoughtful, not the
unthinking, whom God will guide. God's time to come with instruction to his people, is when they are at a
loss. Divine comforts most delight the soul when under the pressure of perplexed thoughts.
Joseph is told that Mary should bring forth the Saviour of the world. He was to call his name Jesus, a
Saviour. Jesus is the same name with Joshua. And the reason of that name is clear, for those whom Christ
saves, he saves from their sins; from the guilt of sin by the merit of his death, and from the power of sin by
the Spirit of his grace. In saving them from sin, he saves them from wrath and the curse, and all misery,
here and hereafter. Christ came to save his people, not in their sins, but from their sins; and so to redeem
them from among men, to himself, who is separate from sinners. Joseph did as the angel of the Lord had
bidden him, speedily, without delay, and cheerfully, without dispute. By applying the general rules of the
written word, we should in all the steps of our lives, particularly the great turns of them, take direction from
God, and we shall find this safe and comfortable.

18

Now this is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother,
Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph.
But while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant by the
Holy Spirit.
19
Joseph, her fianc, being a just man, decided to break
the engagement quietly, so as not to disgrace her publicly.
20
As he considered this, he fell asleep, and an angel of the
Lord appeared to him in a dream. "Joseph, son of David,"
the angel said,
"do not be afraid to go ahead with your marriage to Mary.
For the child within her has been conceived by the Holy
Spirit.
Side note
1 Corinthians 6:3 3 Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that
pertain to this life?

5
21

And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus,1
for he will save his people from their sins."
22
All of this happened to fulfill the Lord's message through
his prophet:
23 (Is.7:14)
"Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give
birth to a son, and he will be called Immanuel1 (meaning,
God is with us)."
24
When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord
commanded. He brought Mary home to be his wife,
25
but she remained a virgin until her son was born. And
Joseph named him Jesus.
Closing
From the Old Testament we get he prophase that tell of the
coming of a savior,
From the New Testament we have the fulfillment of this
prophase in the form of Jesus born of a virgin, which has
come to pay the price of our sin
