has a mass of 2 x 80 grams, = 160 g. RMM = 160 To find the mass of one mole of
a compound,
just add up all the RAMs of the elements of the compound,
Example 1.
How many moles are there in 35 grams of calcium carbonate?
The RFM of calcium carbonate is 100.
moles = mass RFM
moles = 35 100
= 035 moles of calcium carbonate.
Example 2.
How many moles are there in 125 grams of carbon?
The RAM of carbon is 12.
moles = mass RAM
moles = 125 12
= 1042 moles of carbon.
Example 3.
How many grams are there in 42 moles of neon?
The RAM of neon is 20.
mass = moles x RAM
mass = 42 x 20
= 840 grams of neon.
Example 4.
How many grams are there in 567 moles of carbon dioxide?
The RFM of carbon dioxide is 44.
mass = moles x RAM
mass = 567 x 44
= 24948 grams of carbon dioxide.
THE MASS OF PRODUCT FROM REACTION
For a chemical reaction, elements or compounds on
the left side of the equation are called reactants,
those on the right are called products.
reactants
products.
Example 1.
What mass of magnesium oxide will be formed
when 10 g of magnesium is burned in air?
1) Find how many moles of magnesium are present
in 10 g of magnesium.
The RAM of magnesium is 24.
moles = mass RFM
moles = 10 24
= 0417 moles of magnesium.
2) Write the equation for
the reaction between magnesium and oxygen
(burning in air means reacting with oxygen).
magnesium + oxygen
2Mg(s) + O2(g)
magnesium oxide.
2MgO(s)
Moles
The Percentage of an Element in a Compound.
Example 1. What is the percentage of Carbon in Propene?
Formula of propene is C3H6. RAM of C = 12, RAM of H = 1.
Method.
The RFM of propene is (3 x 12) + (6 x 1),
= 36 + 6
= 42.
36 of the 42 is due to carbon,
so the percentage of carbon in the compound is
(36 42) x 100
= 857%.
Answer. Carbon makes up 857% of propene.
Calculating the Empirical Formula from a Reaction.
"Empirical" means "from experiment".
Example 1.
What volume of carbon dioxide
is produced by burning 6 g of carbon in air?
Method.
1) Find how many moles of carbon are present in 6 g of carbon.
RAM of C = 12.
moles = mass RAM
moles = 6 12
= 05 moles of carbon.
carbon dioxide.
CO2(g)
C = (01 x 1000) 30
= 333.
The concentration of hydrochloric acid is 333 mol/dm3.

What is a Weak Alkali? A weak alkali is only partly (less than 100%) ionised.
An example of a weak alkali is ammonia.
A weak alkali has a pH of 11 or 12.
