Theory
National Storytelling Association (1997), stated that storytelling is the interactive art of
using words and actions to reveal the elements and images of a story while encouraging the
listeners imagination. Assessing students speaking ability is also an important thing because as
the EFL students, English is not our Language. It makes us difficult while learning English. Most
students is not have a brave feeling to speak. That also makes speaking is an important thing to
assess. In storytelling, it is not just uses verbal communication but also non-verbal
communication to deliver the story from teller to audiences.
In telling a story, the storyteller should be concerned with five things. Those are as
follows: understand the story, voice mechanic, acting, duration and focus. The storyteller should
understand and remember it while telling in front of the audience. If they cannot understand, they
also cannot deliver it to the audiences. The second things is voice mechanic. The storyteller
should produce the sound with the appropriate volume and correct pronunciation to make the
audience listen clearly and understand the story. The third things is acting. Without acting the
audience will be feel bored while the storyteller telling the story. The fourth things is duration.
While telling the story, the storyteller also should managing the time well. If they telling the
story too fast, it will be hard to understand however if they telling the story too long, it will make
the audience bored. The last thing is focus. The storyteller should be concentrate and engaging
eye contact with the audience, if they cannot do that the audience also will be not concentrate
and focus listen the story.

In storytelling, understanding the story and voice mechanic is the important thing because
if the story teller cannot understand the story and cannot produce correct pronunciation, they will
not success deliver the story to the audience. The second important thing is action. If the
storyteller do not produce the action while telling the story, the audience might be feel bored and
do not want to listen the story. The last but still important of assessing the storytelling are
duration and focus. When the storyteller telling the story, they should manage the time and focus
with the audience. If they are not managing the time well and do not focus with the audience,
their performance might be not success.
The validity is the degree to which an instrument measures what it is supposed to measure.
Sejauh mana instrument tersebut mengukur apa yang mau diukur (validity)
