PRELIMINARY DESIGN PROCEDURE

LOADING
Develop seismic loading based on ASCE 7-10 Chapter 11 and 12.
1. Establish response modification factor R, deflection amplification factor Cd and over strength
factor 0
2. Establish mapped maximum considered earthquake spectral response acceleration for short
and long periods Ss and Sl from USGS data base
3. Calculate design spectral response acceleration SDs and SDl
4. Establish a standard response spectrum for design reference
5. Calculate fundamental period Ta using (Eq. 12.8-2.1)
6. Calculate seismic response coefficient, Cs
7. Calculate seismic base shear V
8. Calculate vertical distribution of story seismic forces
9. Calculate building overturning
10. Distribute seismic forces to structural walls and building frames accounting for accidental
torsion
11. Approximate building deflection (any suggestions without doing computer run?)
Design of structural wall (shear wall)
1. Obtain seismic base shear for one wall pier from horizontal distribution
2. Calculate required seismic shear strength at lower story
3. Design wall thickness or guess at wall thickness and calculate nominal shear strength base on
8fc
4. Calculate seismic overturning moment by proportion of building overturning or from story force
5. distribution
6. Calculate gravity loads dead and live with the approximate loading combinations
7. Base on the calculated seismic OTM, obtain the approximate area of tension reinforcement
8. Check for requirement of boundary element based on Section 18.10.6 (ACI 318m-14)
9. Establish P0, Pb, Mb, Mn to draw an interaction diagram based on = 1
10. Based on Pu/ and Mu/, check that design is within the interaction diagram envelope
11. Check for termination of boundary reinforcement requirement
12. Calculate confinement reinforcement for longitudinal boundary rebar
13. For upper stories, establish shear strength for reduce wall thicknesses and the minimum
reinforcement requirements
Design of special moment frame
1. Obtain seismic base shear for one perimeter frame from horizontal distribution (no less than
25% of total building shear)
2. Distribute story seismic shear to column based on portal method (or other acceptable method)
3. Calculate seismic axial force and moments in end column and first interior column
4. Calculate gravity loads dead and live axial loads
5. Calculate gravity load moments based on approximate coefficients
6. Obtain combined loading combinations for beams and columns
7. For girder design, calcul5ate minimum required flexural strength and reinforcement
8. Calculated required shear strength based on probable moment strength of girder, and design
shear reinforcement.
9. For column (design end column and first interior column), design longitudinal reinforcement
such that it satisfies the column moment strength.
10. Calculate probable moment strength of column ends
11. Calculate required shear strength
12. Design transverse confinement reinforcement.
13. Check joint shear strength requirement.
