HISTORY AND

EVOLUTION OF
ADOBE INDESIGN

10th of August 2016

I. INTRODUCTION

Built as a replacement for Adobes PageMaker. InDesign promises integration

of graphics and careful layout of text, making it the premier package for Desktop
Publishing. Not only it is a versatile software it is also a formidable tool for
publishing.

Taking step with its predecessor PageMaker, InDesign has become the
standard for making brochures, flyers, posters, newspapers, leaflets, magazine
layouts, tabloid and broadsheet.

InDesign also publishes content suitable for tablet devices. Its principle users
are designers and production artists who create and layout periodical publications,
posters, and print media. It also supports exports to EPUB and SWF formats to
create ebooks and digital publications including digital magazines and content
suitable for tablet devices.

II. HISTORY AND EVOLUTION

A. History
InDesign is the successor of Adobe PageMaker, which was acquired with the
purchase of Aldus in late 1994. By 1998 PageMaker had lost almost the entire
professional market to the comparatively feature-rich QuarkXPress 3.3 released in
1992, and 4.0 released in 1996. Quark stated its intention to buy out Adobe and
divest the combined company of PageMaker to avoid anti-issues.

Adobe rebuffed the offer and instead continued to work on a new page layout
application. The project had been started by Aldus and was code-named Shuksan.
It was later code named K2 and was released as InDesign 1.0 in 1999s. The latest
version was released back in November 30, 2015.

Adobe InDesign was created as the successor to the aging Adobe PageMaker.

typographical controls, and long-document support.

By 1998, much of the professional market had migrated from PageMaker to

rival Quark XPress 4.1 due to PageMaker's comparative lack of features. At that
point Quark announced that it wished to purchase the rights to PageMaker and then
discontinue it to avoid breaking US antitrust laws. Adobe rebuffed the offer and
started work on a program that was independent of PageMaker, this program was
released in 1998 as Adobe InDesign 1.0.
B. These are the following Versions of Adobe InDesign

InDesign 1.0 (codenamed Shuksan, then K2): August 31, 1999;

InDesign 1.0, by Adobe Corporation, is a new high-end page layout program

created for graphic designers, production artists, and prepress professionals
who want to design on the desktop but can print on a commercial offset press
or a desktop printer. InDesign is not a new version of PageMaker;
The first release of InDesign, in August 1999, was much anticipated for
months before its release, subsequently many were disappointed by its lack
of some PageMaker features. Despite its lack of some PageMaker features,
InDesign did have features, such as a frame-based approach to page layout,
a Bzier tool, clipping paths, and gradient fills, that PageMaker lacked.
InDesign 1.x requires Mac OS 8.5, 48 MB of RAM with virtual memory on (96
MB RAM with virtual memory off), a PowerPC 604 processor, 130 MB of
available hard drive space, a display with 832 x 624 resolution, a CD-ROM
drive, and a PostScript Level 2 printer.

InDesign 1.5
InDesign 1.5 was released in Spring 2000 and added several new features,
including text on a path, vertical justification, built-in trapping, eyedropper
tool, enhanced color controls, pencil tool, printer and PDF export styles, PDF
scripting, free transform tool, and plugin manager. It also loaded more quickly
InDesign 1.5 has the same requirements as version 1.0 and was available as
a $99 upgrade for owners of the earlier version.

InDesign 2.0 (codenamed Annapurna): January 2002 (just days before

QuarkXPress 5). First version to support Mac OS X, native transparencies and
drop shadows;
Version 2.0 borrows several special effects from Photoshop. You can now
generate soft drop shadows, true transparent objects, feathered edges,
and blend-mode effects within InDesign. These internal tools mean that

all of the same effects are supported when you import layered
Photoshop or Illustrator files. This single feature greatly streamlines the
production process and allows for true creative experimentation when
laying out pages
InDesign 2.x requires Mac OS 9.1, 128 MB of RAM, a G3 processor, 120 MB
available hard drive space, a 256-color display with 1024 x 768 resolution,
and a CD-ROM drive.

InDesign CS (codenamed Dragontail) and InDesign CS Page Maker Edition

(3.0): October 2003;
Marks the integration of the Adobe InDesign name into the Creative Suite,
bringing with in a slew of interactive capabilities. InDesign can now use
Photoshop to edit pictures, Acrobat to create and distribute PDFs, and many
other Creative Suite applications to enhance its design abilities.
InDesign CS (October 2003) had several improvements to the second
incarnation of InDesign. New features include enhanced PSD support, drop
shadows,

control

palette,

story editor,

nested

styles,

improved

XML

import/export, and document presets. InDesign CS PageMaker Edition 3.0

differed from InDesign CS in that it included preinstalled PageMaker

plugins.
InDesign CS.x requires Mac OS X 10.2, 128 MB of RAM, a G3 processor, 250
MB available hard drive space, a 256-color display with 1024 x 768
resolution, and a CD-ROM drive.

InDesign CS2 (4.0) (codenamed Firedrake): May 2005;

Upgrade to Adobe's desktop publishing program. It adds greater integration

with other Creative Suite applications like Photoshop and Acrobat, while
adding support for products acquired from Macromedia like Flash and
Dreamweaver in the same suite.

InDesign CS3 (5.0) (codenamed Cobalt): April 2007. First version to support
Intel-based Macs, regular expression and table styles;
The latest release of the desktop publishing utility InDesign and is part of
Creative Suite 3.

InDesign CS4 (6.0) (codenamed Basil): October 2008;

Adobe InDesign CS4

InDesign CS5 (7.0) (codenamed Rocket): April 2010;

Adobe InDesign CS5

InDesign CS6 (8.0) (codenamed Athos): 23 April 2012;

Adobe Illustrator CS6 Version 16.x of the professional vector graphics
program by Adobe Systems.

InDesign CC (9.2) (codenamed Citius): 15 January 2014;

Adobe InDesign is the industry-standard publishing application for print
publications, interactive PDF documents, digital magazines, and EPUBs.

InDesign CC 2014 (10) (codenamed Sirius): 18 June 2014;

No specific info about version 10.0.

InDesign CC 2015 (11.0): 15 Jun 2015;

the InDesign Object Model. I don't like the representation in the Object Model
Viewer provided by the Adobe ExtendScript Toolkit and hence used the HTML
Version from Jongware on a daily basis.

III. EVALUATION AND CONCLUSION

Based on what we researched and what we read. Therefore we conclude that

InDesign is not only good for print media like magazines, it is also suitable for tablet
devices like ebooks. This tool is great for digital publishing because of the presets
programmed into the application. For example, if you are publishing something on
an eReader or tablet, you can select several page layout presents that are sized for
tablets. Based on what we read Adobe InDesign have 21 recorded versions all in all
from August 31, 1999 up to November 30, 2015.

InDesign may not offer the powerful graphics tools you find with some of
Adobe's other products, these applications still offer some ways to make your
images better. If youre familiar with other Adobe products like Photoshop and
Illustrator you will feel comfortable using InDesign. It is much easier and convenient
to use. InDesign is one of the best page layout applications available because it
plays well with the other Adobe applications.
