About Amnesty
Amnesty International (AI) is a movement of over 3.5 million people in over 150
countries to protect internationally recognized human rights. Its vision is for every
person to enjoy all the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights and other international human rights standards. Amnesty Internationals
mission is to conduct research and take action to prevent and end grave abuses of
all human rights civil, political, social, cultural and economic. From freedom of
expression and association to physical and mental integrity, from protection from
discrimination to the right to housing these rights are indivisible. Awarded the
Nobel Prize for its work, over the last fifty years it has played a pivotal role in
working towards global peace and facilitating international treaties on a wide range
of human rights issues.
Amnesty International India (AII), for the purpose of contextualizing its work in the
country, has developed its 5 year strategic plan to build a self-sustaining human
rights movement in India. Through a framework of action our aim is to improve
understanding of the significance of protecting and promoting human rights in an
emerging economy and, its perception related to an expanding set of themes and
issues. This can be achieved by engaging, empowering, inspiring and mobilizing a
diverse and wide spectrum of people and communities to work for sustainable
positive changes in their own human rights situations.
