The Installation

of a Research
Laboratory
inside the School
Premises for the
Senior High
School Students
I. Introduction:

Education as a main priority for students. - Education allows students to be selfdependent in order to stand up for themselves, to have a secure and better career in
the future, and turning dreams into reality. Being educated has more chances of being
successful and to have a stable life. Students study because they have set of goals to
achieve. Nowadays, the world is surrounded by technologies. In everywhere people go,
it is being used because it is essential to make the everyday life much easier especially
for the students. Newspapers and books are seldom used for research resources as well.

According to the study conducted by Harris Interactive for educational publisher, more
than 2,300 students in grades 4 to 12 (aged 8 to 18) use their digital technologies for
educational purposes. It also showed that 1% of respondents used no digital
technologies in their studies but most indicated that they use laptops (71%) and/or
desktops (66%). Significant numbers of the student population are also using less
traditional computing devices. According to his survey, students use their smart phones
for education, either in class or at home. Also, technological devices such as computers
and laptop are widely used by students for educational purposes.

Based on the data that were gathered by the researchers, there are many students who
bring laptops and netbooks with them to accomplish different tasks that are needed to
be submitted in school. They also found out that there are certain difficulties which
burden the students to have a hard time bringing the gadgets with them because of so
many factors. One of the factors that bother these students is their security and the
safety of their own gadget. Most of the respondents are also in favor of installing a
research laboratory inside the school because it would lessen their burden when
bringing a laptop or a netbook with them every day and it would also help them
accomplish tasks even in a short amount of time.

With these, the researchers would like to propose a Research Laboratory to be

installed inside the school premises for the senior high school students. The said
laboratory would greatly support these students who were having difficulties in carrying
a laptop or netbook with them and to those who worry about their security and safety
whenever they bring it to the school and on their way home as well. According to Mr.
Greg Seismundo, the high school vice principal, the use of a research laboratory can
possibly help the students to improve their grades by being able to work on their
school-related tasks and submitting it on time. Also, Mrs. Bariuad said that the
laboratory can make the students very productive through using their break time in
accomplishing different tasks that needs the use of a computer.

II. Statement of the problem:

1. What are the benefits of having a research laboratory inside the school premises?
2. How do research laboratories would be able to help the students in accomplishing
different tasks and requirements?
3. In what way will the research laboratories help in improving the grades of the
students?
4. How will research laboratories ensure the safety of the students whenever they
bring laptop/netbooks in school?

III. Objectives:

The purposes of the proposal are the following:

To
To
To
To

day.
To ensure the students security and the safety of their own gadgets.
To provide them proper resources needed for research that can be found and

help the students in improving their grades.

encourage the students to be productive especially during their free time.
equipped them with modern-day technology research.
reduce the students burden of bringing laptops/netbooks with them every

used inside the laboratory.

III. Scope and Delimitations

This proposal is beneficial to all the senior high students of Holy Trinity Academy as
well as those from other schools and universities that are planning to build a
research laboratory inside their campus. With the use of the research laboratory,
students will be equipped with the proper materials that are needed for them to
finish a certain task.

The proposal can also be beneficial for those teachers who usually give home works,
projects or any other school-related works that requires the use of modern
technology devices such as computers and printers. With this, they can ensure that
the students would be able to work on the tasks that they have given through the
use of the research laboratory while being able to guarantee their safety.

Another recipient of this proposal is the future researchers who have chosen a topic
similar to that of this study, so that they may have a liable reference and a source
for their work. Furthermore, this will prove as a guide for the researchers involved in
planning to suggest their proposal to their school and university so that they may
improve their strategies and tactics.

V. Outline of the Proposal

The laboratory will be monitored by a certain school personnel that will be
assigned by the school administrators with authorities to maintain the
cleanliness and orderliness of the area. The personnel should make sure that
all students will be given an opportunity to use the research laboratory.
Students should write their names on the log book and present their ID to the
personnel before being able to use the research laboratory.
The laboratory would contain 10-15 computers with printers, depending on
the budget and the area allotted for the proposal. The personnel should have
a record of students who used a certain computer so that if it is damaged,
he/she would be able to identify the student whos held liable.
The laboratory will be a Wi-Fi-zoned area wherein the computers are
connected to the internet.
Students can use the research laboratory and can extend their usage during
free time as long as each and every one of them will be given an opportunity
to access the computers for educational purposes.
Foods and drinks are not allowed inside the laboratory.
Students can only access educational websites such as Wikipedia, search
engines such as Google but social networking sites such as Facebook and
Twitter are restricted.

laboratory to be installed inside the school premises because it will lessen their burden in
bringing a laptop with them every day and it would help them accomplish different tasks
even in a short amount of time. With this, the researchers can infer that the students really
wanted to have a research laboratory wherein they could work on their projects that needs
the use of a computer and a printer that can print their documents that are needed to be
submitted to their teachers.

VII. Conclusion

The installation of research laboratory inside the school premises, is therefore,

proposed by the researchers for the senior high school students. As the world is
surrounded is by technologies today, the students are more into it and they found it
easier and useful in their everyday lives, mostly in studies.

As from the data gathered by the researchers, most of the students are in favor of
having a research laboratory. The researchers have found out that the students
bring their laptops and netbooks to accomplish different tasks and however, not all
students have Wi-Fi, computers and any type of gadgets at home. It gives a hard
time for the students to do their works and it is also, makes the students worry
about their security and safety in bringing their gadget in school. In some cases,
students forget to do their works and some has a problem in where to get their
resources for a certain tasks.

With these, the researchers have thought of proposing the installation of research
laboratory inside the school premises for students as the solution to the problem. Its
purpose is to improve the grades of the students, make them productive, equips
them a modern technology for research, and provides them with proper resources to
reduce the burden of bringing laptops and as well to ensure their security and
safety.

The proposal also promotes the value of collaboration with others through meeting
technology standards as an individual discovery and by working altogether with
peers. This proposal would be a great help to the students. This is also beneficial to
those who are planning to build a research laboratory as a reliable source and guide
for their work.

IV. Background Study of the Proposal

Research centers of the De LaSalle University

The University research centers keep abreast of industry practices, trends and
objectives through coordination with other industry sectors, locally and globally.
They formulate reference guidelines to set standard practices. There are research
centers that have databases of data and observations for easier retrieval of
information to member individuals and organizations. Conclusions made in past
studies can serve as basis for present day experimentations in order to predict
future directions. These are part and parcel of the University's involvement in the
total development of the students.

Objectives:

To provide an intellectually and culturally vibrant environment for academics

and students in which teaching and research can proceed as effectively and

efficiently as possible.

Students Using Handheld Computers to Learn Collaboratively in a First

Grade Classroom
Megan Lynne Fritz
Dr. Elizabeth Haslam

This study investigated how first grade students used handheld computers to learn
in collaboration with others throughout the learning process. This research focused
specifically on how the use of handheld computers impacts students learning
outcomes and relates to technology standards.
A qualitative methodology was used to capture detailed descriptions of 23 first
grade students experiences, attitudes, beliefs, and interactions while they used
handheld computing devices to learn. Data collection included observations,
interviews, and student artifacts. The researcher observed students while they used
handheld computers to learn. She also conducted informal small group interviews to
capture the students and teachers perspectives. The researcher collected and
analyzed student artifacts which included items from the students handheld
computers, items beamed from one handheld computer to another, and documents
they created on paper as a result of work completed on the handheld computer.
Documents were assessed according to content standards and technology
standards.
The results are that students achieved learning outcomes while using handheld
computers. The students learned content through collaboration with others. The
students also met technology standards through individual discovery and

collaborating with peers. The researcher stated five conclusions. Handheld

computers facilitated collaborative learning which in turn helped the students learn
content and meet technology standards. The students themselves said that the
handheld computers helped them learn content and technology. The teachers role
is critically important as a facilitator in providing support for helping students learn
to use the handheld computers. The discovery approach of teaching students how
to use the handheld computers leads to independent learning.
This study is significant for several reasons. This study supports and extends
various studies. The students learned how to use the handheld computers in a
holistic nature. Students used reflective thinking about their use of technology. This
study contributes to the expanding group of researchers who are looking at
technology and learning using a qualitative approach.

Situation: A teacher gives a project to the students wherein they have to create a
video presentation regarding on a certain topic. Then, students are divided into
different groups to work together. The students are concerned on how would they
be able to edit the video presentations because they dont have the resources such
as computer and references to be able to create and edit a video by themselves.
Proposed Solution: With the installation of the research laboratory, students will
now be equipped with the proper resources such as computer and other reference
materials in order for them to create and edit a video presentation. The role of the
school personnel that will be assigned to the laboratory should be able to maintain
the cleanliness and orderliness of the area.
Steps Involved:
1. Students are required log-in their ID number upon entering.
2. The school personnel will assign them a computer that they can use.
3. Students must be aware of their time usage.
4. If something is needed to be printed, they can ask the personnel for assistance.
5. Before leaving, students must ask permission first for inspection purpose such as
damage.
Benefits:
The research laboratory would greatly enhance the students ability in using the
technology device upon creating the project.
The students dont need to gather outside the school for them to allot a time in
creating the project. The research laboratory enables them to work on it inside the
school, thus ensuring their safety.

Because of the research laboratory, the students dont have to bother on bringing
laptops/netbooks along with them in school.

Potential Obstacles:
The time allotted for them might not be enough to be able to finish their work.
The opportunity to use the research laboratory depends on how many students
are currently using and how big will the research laboratory be.
The school might not allow free printing services because inks are expensive, as
well as papers. Thus, the students will have to pay for the documents they will print.
The computers that are installed inside the research laboratory might undergo
maintenance when it doesnt function well.
