The Tradition and Modernity of Funeral Industry: Change of Labor

Division and Funeral Ritual in Chiayi County

()

III

Abstract
Before the large enterprise groups getting involved in the Taiwan funeral market,
funeral industry's business model was mainly based on two types of personal
relationships and traditional agent form. The modern commercial agents and the
religious groups have been playing an important role in changing the structure of
funeral field in the last decade. They change the division of labor in the funeral field
and influence the public values towards the funeral ceremony. This study aims to
outline the current change of funeral field by focusing on three major agents, that is,
the government, the religious groups and the funeral business groups. Firstly, I shall
review the history of traditional funeral industry and the funeral policy. By examining
the current funeral commercialization and the funeral reform of
religious organizations, I try to explain the dynamics of this new
development. Secondly, the change of funeral ritual is also the topic of this study. By
analyzing the abandoned funeral ritual, I shall deal with the issue of funeral reform.
The empirical data are based on the social phenomena in Chiayi area. The results
show that the funeral business has not reached the status full of corporate-market
model yet, but rather a special multicultural type: the traditional network of funeral
management is coexisting with the modern industry's brand marketing form. In
comparison with the metropolis this shows an urban-rural gap.

Key word: Funeral, Division, Commercialized, Funeral ceremony, Ritual change
