1. Effective depth of slab (cl.22.

2 of IS 456)
Selection of depths of slab is governed by the deflection criteria which is achieved by limiting span/depth ratio

Max. allowable l/d ratio (l/d)max

=modification factor (kt) * (l/d)basic

7 for cantilever spans

Whrere (l/d)basic

20 for simply supported slab

26 for contineous span

The above is valid for spans above 10 m. For span above 10m, values above may be multiplied by

** 10/span in metres, except for cantilever in which case deflection calculations should be made.

Modification factor depends on area/percentage of tension reinforcement (p t) and Steel stress at service

** (fst).

** Steel Stress at working Stress is assumed preliminary as 0.58 x yield stress of steel (Fy)
**
**

Steel area required

Actual Steel Stress is obtained as 0.58 Fy x
Steel area provided

** Percentage of Steel (pt) for one-way slab is preliminarily assumed as

pt = 0.3 to 0.45% for M20 & Fe-415 steel
(For lighter load and smaller span lower value is taken)

** Modification factor can be found by the eqaution below as given in SP-24

kt=1/ (0.225+0.00322fs + 0.625log10(pt) <= 2
for Fe415, & pt=0.4-0.5%, kt=1.25 can be considered
for preliminary design (Pillai & Menon et.al)

The nominal cover to be provided depends upon durability and

fire resistance requirements. Table 16 and 16A of IS 456 provide the
respective values. Appropriate value of the nominal cover is to be
provided from these tables for the particular requirement of the

Nominal cover is the design depth of concrete cover to all steel reinforcements, ,including links. It is the
dimension used in design and indicated in the drawings. It shall be not less than the diameter of the
bar.

4. Design moment & shra co-effcients for One-way Contineous Slab:

** Moment and shear co-effcient are applicable for cases of (uniformly loaded) one-way contineous slabs
and (secondary) contineous beams of uniform cross-section which support substantially uniformly
distributed loads over three or more spans which do not differ by more than 15 percent of the longest.
** Shear co-effcient are not required for slabs as they donot have to check for shear, the shear stress being
kept in check by the adequate depth provided for deflection control.

** In any span, sagging (positive) moment is assumed to be located at the midspan location and hence
reinforcement are provided a the bottom along short span.
** In any span, hogging (negative) moment is assumed to be located at the face of support and hence
reinforcement are provided a top edge of slab span.

** End span with one end discont. is having larger moment than the int. spans and governs the thickness.
Often the same thickness is provided to int. spans also. For large nos. of int. span thcik provd. seaparately
for economy. For deflection check max. mid span moment is taken.
5. Detaling of Reinforcement: As per SP-34
a) Using Bent-up Bars: Alternate bottom reinforcement from either side are bent up to meet to the top
reinforcement require at the support. As the reinforcemnt at the support (-ve moment)
is more than the bottom reinf .( +ve moment), extra bars are reqd. to provided with any
diameter and matching spacing of bottom bars. Since the bars in either side of a support
generally have different spacing, this pose problem. Hence detailing with staright bars are
preferred.
b) Using Staright Bars: Separate reinforcemnt is detailed for the positive and negative reinforcement.

Ratio of longerspan to shorter span to be <= 2 i.e., Ly/Lx<=2.

2. Effective Span:

Effective span in both directions (lx & ly) are computed considering the criteria
same as for one-way slab. In practice, however, c/c distance is considered on
safer side and for safety and less-hand coputation

3. Effective Depth: Decided based on deflection criteria and shorter effective span length (lx)
3.1

For lx <=3.5m and L.L <= 3.0 KN/m^2

Code Cl. 24.1, Note-2, permits the slab thickness (overall Depth D) as:

for contineous slab

Using HYSD (Fe-415 and Fe500)

( for above L/D ratio no furthur checking on deflection criteria is required.)

3.2

For lx >3.5m or L.L > 3.0 KN/m^2 and vice versa

** Allowable l/d ratio will be same as that for one-way slab.
** A lower value %pt (0.2-0.3%) & kt= 1.5 (Pillai & menon et.al) may be
assumed compared to one-way slab as tension reinf. requirement is less.

4. Design Load:

middle strip extending to within 0.25 lx of a continuous edge or 0.15 lx

of a discontinuous edge. Distance recommended to be measured from
the center of support.
6.2

Max. design -ve moment along shorter direction Mx -=x-.Wu. lx2

(Corrsponding Area of reinforcement A-st.x is provided over the continuous edges

of a middle strip, the tension reinforcement shall extend in the upper

part of the slab a distance of 0.15 l x from the face of the support, and at
least 50 perccent shall extend a distance of 0.3l xfrom the face of the
support )
(At a discontinuous edge, tension reinforcement at top equal to 50 percent of that provided
at mid-span (0.5A+st.x) extending 0.1lx from the face of support is provided to cater of
possible negative moment)

(At a discontinuous edge, tension reinforcement at top equal to 50 percent of that provided
at mid-span (0.5A+st.x) extending 0.1lx from the face of support is provided to cater of
possible negative moment)
6.3

Max. design +ve moment along longer direction My+=y+.Wu. lx2

(note that lx for span moment calculation should be used, not ly)
(Corrsponding area of reinforcement A+st.y is provided in the bottom part of

middle strip along longer direction extending to within 0.25 ly of a

continuous edge or 0.15 ly of a discontinuous edge. Distance
recommended to be measured from the center of support.
6.4

Max. design -ve moment along longer direction My-=y-.Wu. lx2

(Corrsponding Area of reinforcement A-st.y is provided over the continuous edges

of a middle strip, the tension reinforcement shall extend in the upper

part of the slab a distance of 0.15 l y from the face of the support, and at
least 50 perccent shall extend a distance of 0.3l yfrom the face of the
support )
(At a discontinuous edge, tension reinforcement at top equal to 50 percent of that provided
at mid-span (0.5A+st.y) extending 0.1ly from the face of support is provided to cater of
possible negative moment)
6.5

In the edge strips along both direction, distribution bars parallel to that edge should be
provided- at top and bottom-to tie up with the main bars)

Torsion reinforcemnt at corners of discontineous edgs:

Torsion reinforcemnt shall be provided at the corner of a rectangular slab panel where, two
discontineous edges as well as where one discontineous and another contineous edges
meet. The rebars should be placed both at top and bottom either in the form of mesh (or
grid pattern), can be made U-shape also, in the two orthogonal direction extending lx/5
from the face of support.

Amount of reinforcement:
* 0.75 x A+st.x if both edges meeting at corner are discontineous
* 0.375 x A+st.x if one edge is contineous and the other discontineous

** For negative moments at two panels sharing a common contineous edge, larger one should be
considered as the design negative moment at that contineous edge.
