Important Notes

I look forward to seeing you all at our Family Education Night this Thursday October 6 th from 6-7.
Please come with your child to see the Common Core standards come to life, sign up for conferences, and
sign up for our class parties. Mrs. Barker and Mr. Foster will be presenting about our standards based
report cards from 6:45-7 in our cafeteria.
As the weather turns cooler please make sure to send your child to school with a jacket. They will be
going outside for recess unless its raining.
Please visit my website asnead.weebly.com for an online version of this newsletter, news, updates, class
photos and links to educational websites.
Reading
This week we will be reading the fiction book Stellaluna about a baby bat who gets separated from her
mother. Students will practice sequencing the story, identifying problem/solution, and making
connections to the story. In guided reading groups this week we will be reading a nonfiction passage
about bats. Students will practice identifying key vocabulary words, locating information, and answering
comprehension questions about the passage. The students are now required to take one AR quiz a week
and they are doing a great job of reading carefully to assure they can correctly answer the
comprehension questions.
Math
This week in math we will use the hundreds chart to add two digit numbers. We will use our Learning
Carpet to walk the problem by going down for the tens digit and over for the ones. For example if we
are doing 35 + 17 we would stand on 35, go down 10 to 45, and then over 7 to end on 52. We will also be
talking about various ways to write a number including: standard form, expanded form, base ten block
form, number bonds, and word form. Our first district math assessment will be given on October 13 th
and 14th so we will begin to review previously taught concepts this week. This week we will review:
number lines, comparing numbers, and even/odd numbers.

Writing
Students will review the writing process by writing about bats. We will work through the writing process
together as a class as we complete a shared writing about bats. We will practice locating facts on the
internet to use in an informational paragraph. We will be discussing common/proper nouns this week as
well. Proper nouns are specific nouns that need to be capitalized and common nouns are general nouns
that do not need to be capitalized.
Science
Students will be learning about Christopher Columbus this week. We will be reading a book about
Columbuss travels, making a mini book for students to keep, and completing a writing prompt about what
students would do if they discovered America.
