Breed registration Committee in its meeting on 6th January, 2015 at New Delhi approved
registration of seven new breeds of livestock and poultry and one line of chicken. This

includes two breeds of cattle, one breed each of goat, sheep, pig, camel and chicken.
Total number of indigenous breeds in the country will now be 151, which include 39 for
cattle,
13 for buffalo, 24 for goat, 40 for sheep, 6 for horses & ponies, 9 for camel, 3 for pig, 1 for
donkey and 16 for chicken.

Transcriptomics is the study of the transcriptomethe complete set of RNA

transcripts that are produced by the genome, under specific circumstances or in a
specific cellusing high-throughput methods, such as microarray analysis. Comparison
of transcriptomes allows the identification of genes that are differentially expressed in

distinct cell populations, or in response to different treatments.

Proteomics is the large-scale study of proteins, particularly their structures and functions.
Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that develops methods and software tools for
understanding biological data. As an interdisciplinary field of science, bioinformatics
combines computer science, statistics, mathematics, and engineering to study and process
biological data.
2

Cytomics is the study of cell systems (cytomes) at a single cell level. It combines all
the bioinformatic knowledge to attempt to understand the molecular architecture and

functionality of the cell system (Cytome).

Genomics is
a
discipline
in genetics that

applies recombinant

DNA, DNA

sequencing methods, and bioinformatics to sequence, assemble, and analyze the function

and structure of genomes (the complete set of DNA within a single cell of an organism).
In genetics, shotgun sequencing, also known as shotgun cloning, is a method used
for sequencing long DNA strands. It is named by analogy with the rapidly expanding, quasi-

random firing pattern of a shotgun.

Longer sequences are subdivided into smaller fragments that can be sequenced separately,
and subsequently they are re-assembled to give the overall sequence. Two principal methods
are used for this: primer walking (or "chromosome walking") which progresses through the
entire strand piece by piece, and shotgun sequencing which is a faster but is also more

complex process and uses random fragments.

Immunomics is the study of immune system regulation and response to pathogens using

genome-wide approaches.
Genomic selection is a form of marker-assisted selection in which genetic markers
covering the whole genome are used so that all quantitative trait loci (QTL) are in linkage

disequilibrium with at least one marker.

In situ hybridization (ISH) is a type of hybridization that uses a labeled complementary
DNA, RNA or modified nucleic acids strand (i.e.,probe) to localize a specific DNA or RNA
sequence in a portion or section of tissue (in situ), or, in the entire tissue (whole mount ISH),

in cells, and in circulating tumor cells (CTCs).

FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) is

a cytogenetic technique

developed

by

biomedical researchers in the early 1980s[1] that is used to detect and localize the presence or
absence of specific DNA sequences on chromosomes. FISH uses fluorescent probes that
bind to only those parts of the chromosome with which they show a high degree of

sequence complementarity.
Real-time polymerase chain reaction is a laboratory technique of molecular biology based
on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which is used to amplify and simultaneously detect

or quantify a targeted DNA molecule.

The procedure follows the general principle of polymerase chain reaction; its key feature is
that the amplified DNA is detected as the reaction progresses in "real time".
3

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a technology in molecular biology used

to amplify a single copy or a few copies of a piece of DNA across several orders of

magnitude, generating thousands to millions of copies of a particular DNA sequence.

Application of PCR
Selective DNA isolation: PCR allows isolation of DNA fragments from genomic DNA by

selective amplification of a specific region of DNA.

allocation of Rs 150.00 crore.
OBJECTIVES:
a) To undertake breed improvement programme for Indigenous Breeds so as to
improve the genetic makeup and increase the stock.
b) To enhance milk production and productivity of Indigenous Bovines.
c) To upgrade nondescript cattle using elite indigenous breeds like Gir, Sahiwal,
Rathi, Deoni, Tharparkar, Red Sindhi.
d) To distribute disease free high genetic merit bulls of indigenous breeds for
natural service.
DURATION OF THE PROJECT:

Rashtriya Gokul Mission will be implemented throughout the country during 12th
