Discussion by V. R. Desai,4 Associate Member, ASCE

First, let me congratulate the authors for their experimental research and
publication on cross-flow turbine performance. However, I find that Eq. (2),
which is dimensionally nonhomogeneous, needs to be corrected slightly. As
per Banki's (1918) expression, when the angles between the peripheral and
relative velocities at the first stage inlet and second stage exit are same (i.e.,
131 = 132), the efficiency (11) is given by
I

11 = 2C 2 -U (1
VI

'1')

cos

al -

UI)

VI

(3)

where C = nozzle velocity coefficient; and 'I' = relative velocity coefficient.

At the runaway condition, net torque on the runner (T) and, subsequently,
the efficiency is zero. So
UI
-VI
= cos al

(4)

i.e.
1TD,NR ,.

60

= Y2gH cos a l

(5)

or
N

R,.

1TD!

=-Y2gHcosa

(6)

This is the corrected form of Eq. (2). This equation is also dimensionally
homogeneous.
Second, it will be better if the authors mention the location of the experimental setup. This will give the interested readers an opportunity to either
visit the setup or interact with the authors more effectively.
Next, it appears that one of the nozzle entry arc values reported in Table
1 needs to be changed from 12 to 23 to make it consistent with Figs. 3(a),
3(b), 4(b), 5(b), 7, 8(a), 8(b), 9(a), 9(b), and 10. Similarly, the shaft diameter
reported in Table 1 (i.e., 63 mm) needs to be made compatible with the shaft
diameter shown in Fig. l(a). Finally, the vertical scale graduations in Fig.
6(b) need to be made uniformly linear throughout.
I sincerely thank the authors as well as the ASCE Journals Department for
providing me with this opportunity.

Closure by V. Seshadri'

As has been rightly pointed out by Dr. Desai. the correct form of Eq. (2)
should be as follows:

The experimental setup exists in the Auid Mechanics Laboratory of the

Applied Mechanics Department at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi,
India.
The value of the nozzle entry arc in Table 1 has a typographical error.
Instead of 12 it should be 23. as has been pointed out by Dr. Desai.
Fig. l(a) has been correctly drawn. The diameter of the shaft shown in the
figure is that of the portion that is supported in the bearings. For experiments
with various shaft diameters. only the portion between the two bearings is
replaced. Hence. no correction in Fig. l(a) is called for.
The vertical scale graduations in Fig. 6(b) need correction; instead of 75
and 85 as shown in the figure. the values should be 65 and 75. This is again
a typographical mistake.
The writers sincerely thank V. R. Desai for pointing out the previous corrections to the paper.
