The Dramatic Devices

The question of what is drama and what is the purpose of drama must be
considered in any discussion of what is the dramatic function of any of its key
elements or devices.
Drama seeks to entertain through community part, action, sound, spectacle,
suspense and an emotion-filled story line that reflects life. We trace with avid
interest the rite of passage or life changing experiences of characters and which can
impact heavily on the audience as well.
Now any element associated with drama would seek ultimately to perform these
functions.
For visual effects the dramatist depends on costuming which reflects mood of the
characters social status, personality, etc.
Lightning- to indicate certain trends in the action/ darkness reflects the ominous,
brightness. Like costumes props convey a word of information and emotion to the
audience. More often they are imbined with heavy symbolism as well.
Action and dialogue unlike prose, drama depends primarily on dialogue and action
to inform the audience of what is happeneing. Or the motivation for certain actions.
Action, however is presented differently in plays than in prose or poetry. Most of
what occurs are presented to the audience through the dialogue. So are some of the
thoughts of the characters and sometimes these are done in dramatic monologues
(techniques). Actions can also be given as flash backs and like all flash backs or
foreshadowing this will pride dramatic function which simply means adding
embellishment to the drama. The flash back flashes out the plot for the audience
and throws light on the present happenings or prone motivation for some actions.
The foreshadowing is a wonderful dramatic technique which increases suspense.
The dialogue itself provides the mode of presentation of the play and the
meandering that this plot is achieved through the dialogue that this plot is achieved
through the dialogue. Heightened emotional outburst subdued whisper. All highly
emotional.
The characters themselves are a common drum of dramatic irony in which the
characters do not know things regarding the play that the audience know.
The soliloquy is another dramatic technique which allows the play wright to confide
aliend to the audience. Contrast and countertouls in characterization are other
dramatic techniques which go towards creating of a play.
They are tied to the exploration in the various themes which the play seeks to
explore through the fluctuating fortunes of the characters.
