The Software as an Educational Resource

What is a Software?
Software is the generic term for programs. It consists of instructions for
controlling and directing the computer. We use software to perform varied task
using the computer.
Kinds of Software
1. The System Software - This is the operating system that is found or
bundled inside all computer machines.
a. Operating System

Microsoft Windows (Windows 95,XP,7&8)

Mac OS (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion)
Linux (Ubuntu, Debi an, Fedora)
DOS

b. Programming Languages
Java C++
TASM
Machine Code
2. The Application Software - This contains the system that commands the
particular task or solves a particular problem.
a. Custom Software - made for specific purpose.
e.g. Transaction Process (enrolment system)
b. Commercial Software / General Purpose- used in variety of task
such as writing papers, calculating numbers, drawing, playing games
and others.

Instructional Software are software that are used in the instructional process.
These are called Computer-Based Instructional Materials (CBI).
In evaluating computer-based educational materials, the following can serve as
guidelines:

Be extremely cautious.

Must always be substance over form.

These resources must be evaluate using sound pedagogical principles

Observe clarity in explanations and illustrations of concepts and

principles.

Maintain accuracy, coherence, logic of information.

The data and statistics must not be obsolete.

Relevant and effective in attaining the learning objectives.

Observe absence of biased materials (gender bias or racial bias) .

Reflection:
Educational computer software is any kind of computer software that teaches
something, or helps someone to teach others, or to self-teaching. In school,
educational computer software are useful by enhancing the capability of a
teacher or student to be creative, teachers in their lesson presentations and
students in their activities.
