Task 4

Write an argumentative essay based on the selected issues with appropriate writing
conventions in about 1000 words.
Grades, they are just another way to describe ones intellect. However, is this true? School and
education is significant because it provides a foundation for everyday skills and manoeuvre
(Bretz, 1989), more specific to primary education. How many people will actually learn to read,
write and communicate without education? Education is the act or process of imparting and
acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning, judgment, and generally of
preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life. Academic qualifications are the Phds,
master degrees, degrees, diplomas, certificates, professional titles and so forth that an
individual has acquired whether by full-time study, part-time study or private study, whether
discussed in the home country or abroad and whether consulted by educational authorities,
special examining bodies or professional bodies (Carmeli, 2007). The 'history of education' is
about the development of systematic methods of teaching and learning. Presumably, every
generation since the beginning of human existence somehow passed on its stock of values,
traditions, methods and skills to the next generation. In my opinion, academic qualification does
not ensure success in life.
First and foremost, academic qualification ensures success in life by getting a good job and
getting paid well (Willard, 2014). Academic qualifications displays that a person has the basics
in learning. If their basic grounding in Math, Science and Language is strong, then one can get
success in life because mastering these subjects allows a person to calculate, to innovate and
to communicate. These essentials for success cannot be learned without professional help like
in schools and colleges. In order to prove that someone has acquired this knowledge, one is
tested. If a persons learning is satisfactory, then he is given a certificate to indicate their
competence as an academic qualification. These are the necessary things to get a good, very
well paid job or career, but getting paid for a job that is not enjoyable does not mean that a
person is happy. Unfortunately, the materialistic world has changed the concept of success. It
has become a rat-race where every student chases grades and therefore the entire perception
of success and prosperity has changed (Willard, 2014). Rather than studying to reach ones full
potential, they do it because they think it is necessary for a successful career. So, they spend
ten years in school and a few more years of their precious life in college to get educated, then
more time is passed in hunting for jobs. Even after that they may find themselves in the wrong

profession or not being able to find a job at all, and when they find one they will be lacking job
satisfaction.
Eventually the recession comes along, when they are told that their wealth has been blown
away by the foolishness of expensive fat-salaried managers. Now comes a time when people
go to work with a constant fear of losing the job they do not enjoy. Is this the correct
understanding of prosperity? So now the definition of success is changed. If people are able to
save their jobs then they are uniformly successful. Workers ages forty-five to fifty-four have the
second lowest level of satisfaction, according a survey conducted by The Conference Board, a
market information company Indicators (Hogan, 2013). Nowadays, people are not delighted with
the jobs they chose, so they are unhappy until they day of retirement. Not being happy or
satisfied can cause nothing in the work field and can create a lot of stress for the workers, which
can lead to suicide. Not only is that, but people in Americans are also jobless.
An academic qualification gives people a rounded experience of life, with opportunities to meet
people from a wide range of backgrounds and to consider the importance of values and culture
(Caliendo, 2010). These are necessary things required to label a person successful in all
aspects of life. More broadly, widespread further education makes us a more civilized nation. It
uplifts a persons morals and ethics by exposing people to the great thinkers of the past. It
makes people aware of their rights and liberties, and helps entrench a liberal democracy with
active citizens and a lively media (Hogan, 2013). Consequently, people are not going to college
or even trying to find a job, because they are afraid of wasting their time or not just that but they
might not be able to afford college in the first place. The work field is a very competitive place,
even with the best scores in class ones position may be already taken in the field that they may
want, so all their efforts just went down the drain and they will have to downgrade into a lower
paying job for a long time being. People are not going to school or getting a job because they
were not in a comfortable learning environment so they could not show the intelligence that they
possess. Thus, success is going to school and just trying your best.
Whether one is proposing marriage, applying for a job or looking for a new business partner, the
first thing people ask is, "what do you do?" In other words they judge people by their academic
qualifications. No resume or curriculum vitae are acceptable without the inclusion of education
qualifications. Therefore, it is an unannounced rule of both the corporate world and the social
world that a man's acquisition of academic qualifications is a giant leap towards opportunities in
every walk of life. There may be a few people like Bill Gates and others who have made it, in
spite of their dropout background and lack of academic qualifications (William, 2010), but can
2

this be generalised? Should parents tell their child to leave schooling because if Bill Gates can
do it they can also do it also? A few exceptions cannot be taken as a general rule. Success is
not getting a grade or a degree, if that was it, then why are not all the graduates from Harvard,
Oxford or Cambridge uniformly successful? The rule of success is hard work and destiny of
course. If a student of engineering gets good grades but he is not practically effective in
relationship-buildings and solving crises or proper planning, even though he may be successful
in getting a job but it will not lead him far. On the way he is sure to fade out. Success never
depends upon grades. If success and opportunities were measured by grades then the
corporate world and potential marriage partners would not ask for biodata in resumes, where
other qualifications are also mentioned. Nor would they interview the prospects in order to find
out what they are like as people, rather they would give a blind appointment to the people with
the best paper qualifications. So, qualifications alone are never enough, success depends upon
physical characteristics, personality, and a willingness to work hard (Carmeli, 2007).
To sum up the foregoing, academic qualification would only serve as the toppings on our
favorite pizza, but it would never taste like a pizza without the cheese. Academic qualification
does not ensure success in life because success is your real and only happiness. There are not
a lot of people going to school because not everyone can afford school. Even the smartest
people of the world did not to graduate college or even high school, and still manage make
millions of dollars still; does this mean they are failures in life? Unfortunately the materialistic
world has changed the concept of success. To help the world more understand what success
really is, you should just always try your hardest in whatever you do that makes you happy to
follow your dreams and everyone will follow along with you.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that excellence in academic qualification does not ensure success
in life. Skills, ability and willingness to work hard in ones life are the main factors that can
guarantee a successful future. Academic qualification is only a way to recognize a persons
strength. Thus, it should not be made as the sole determiner of success in life. As the famous
quote goes, Where theres a will, theres a way, there is always a chance for everyone to be
successful in life as long as they are willing to take on the challenge (William, 2010).
