t an estimated cost
of 21 billion USD in
2006, the trans-Saharan
gas pipeline would have the
capacity to transport some
30 billion cubic meters of
gas per year from Nigeria to
Europe. Within the European
Union, gas consumption is
overall shrinking but gas
production is declining even
faster (30% of the gas needs
are supplied by Russia,
compared to 14% provided
by Algeria). Large natural
gas consumers like Germany,
France, the United Kingdom
and Spain now prefer to
purchase liquefied natural
gas that can be exported by
ship. While the infrastructure
costs are significant (the cost
of a liquefaction unit amounts
to billions of dollars), the
liquid natural gas option
circumvents the security
problems inherent in a transSaharan gas pipeline.

21milliards de dollars US
en 2006, le gazoduc permettrait
de transporter 30 milliards de
mtres cubes par an depuis
le Nigeria jusquen Europe.
Dans lUnion europenne
(dont 30 % des besoins
sont satisfaits par la seule
Russie, 14 % par lAlgrie), la
consommation de gaz baisse
mais la production baisse
plus vite encore. Dsormais,
les gros consommateurs de
gaz comme lAllemagne, la
France, la Grande-Bretagne et
lEspagne privilgient lachat
de gaz liqufi qui peut tre
export par bateau. Si les cots
des infrastructures sont considrables (le cot dune unit
de liqufaction se compte
en milliards de dollars US),
loption gaz liquide permet de
contourner les problmes de
scurit poss par le gazoduc
transsaharien.
