Shot Types & Camera Movement: Wide

shot which tracks into a mid-long shot with

the use of a focus pull

Analysis
This first shot sees the audiences
attention directed to the in focus
pipe which, following a tracking
inwards movement, leads the
attention towards an isolated
character with the use of a focus pull.
The isolation suggests that the
character is of importance or attains
an element of vulnerability. His dark
clothing and slick back hair act as a
binary opposition with his submissive
nature (hands in pocket + no eye
contact). The chiascuro lighting aids
in creating an enigmatic shot and
thus, a mysterious atmosphere.

Shot Types & Camera Movement: Low angle

close up shot

Analysis
The predominance of the car in
this shot suggests that this is a
key aspect in the video, with the
vehicle connoting a concept of a
journey. Although, the
characters are positioned centre
frame, as well as the outside
being blurred which reiterates
the fact that they are of
importance. The combination of
this focus, suggests that the
journey involves the characters
with their slow car speed
connoting that they are stuck
with issues or aspirations and
cannot overcome these, whilst
the world around them
continues to function. The
headlights of the car highlight
the fact that this shot is taking
place at night; creating an eerie
and enigmatic atmosphere.

The nature (close up) of this

shot allows the audience to
establish the characters
emotions through their facial
expressions; vulnerable and
sad. The expression subverts
the typical reasoning of using
a low angle shot to show
power and masculinity. The
fact that he is alone, anchors
the idea that he is the focal
point, which thus leads the
video forwards. The use of
smoke replicates the same
codes and conventions used
in the Film Noir genre, which
emphasises the enigmatic
atmosphere, as well as
creating a bad boy image.
The aura of his rebellious
nature is reiterated by his
physical appearance, yet this
is once again contradicted by
his submissive actions.

Analysis:
The typical reasoning behind a
two shot is to show the
relationship of characters, in
which we can establish that
the males may have
encountered an argument or
may attain a distant
relationship, due to looking in
opposite directions. This idea
is reinforced with their neutral
yet moody facial expressions.
The weather works cohesively
with the characters
expressions, in order to create
a depressed and melancholy
atmosphere. The shallow focus
reiterates that the focus of the
audience should be on this
main character, which
highlights his importance in
the video.

Shot Types & Camera Movement: Mid shot and

tracking inwards to create the idea that goes over
his shoulder

Music/Lyrics: Hey now call it a split cause you

know that it will

Shot Types & Camera Movement: Two shot and

minimal track to the left

Music/Lyrics: Instrumental music

Analysis
The composition of the
character is changed in
this shot, due to the track
towards his shoulder. The
fact that the close up
takes place left of the
frame, reiterates the
enigmatic atmosphere
that has been constant
throughout the video. The
contrast with the lighting
is used in conjunction
with this camera
movement, in order to
highlight the characters
mysterious yet vulnerable
side; the silhouette
connotes two
personalities.

Analysis
As mentioned before,
the audience is meant
to focus on the
suggested relationship
in this shot, which can
be said to be very
intimate due to the fact
that the shot consists of
two naked torsos. The
focus is directed
towards the cross which
signifies religion and
innocence which is then
contradicted by their
appearance, thus
subverting the idea of
sex after marriage
(Christian belief). Binary
opposition is also used
with the idea of light
and dark portraying
right and wrong.

with two focus pulls

Music/Lyrics: You say, well where nobody

knows, with guns sitting under our petticoat
Shot Types & Camera Movement: Mid shot and
tracking outwards

Music/Lyrics: No were never gonna quit it, no

were never gonna quit it no

Analysis
The lighting is used in
conjunction with the nature
(close up) of the shot, in
order to highlight some key
features of his face. The
focus pulls retain the
enigmatic aspect to this
video, whilst also providing
the character with an
element of mystery, which
can be said to compliment
his dark aesthetic.
Edit/Transitions: Standard
cut
Analysis
This shot can be seen to
replicate the initial shot
that the audience first
saw, although this one
can be seen to track
outwards. The tracking
motion could connote
that the character is
trying to push the
audience out, which
suggests that the
previous shots were an
insight into the character
mind. The lighting and
smoke reiterates the
characters enigmatic and
bad boy persona, with
the smoke being
interpreted as an
indexical sign of fire.

Shot Types & Camera Movement: Wide shot and

static camera

Analysis
Throughout the video the
characters have been
enveloped in darkness
yet, the artificial light in
this shot can be said to
juxtapose with this
element. This change
could be said to connote
real time, with the other
shots being in the past or
in his thoughts.

Music/Lyrics: Now we run away from the boy in

Shot Types & Camera Movement: Wide
shot and a 360 degree movement

Music/Lyrics: Instrumental music

Edit/Transitions:
Standard cut

Analysis
The use of lighting creates a
silhouette of the characters,
which emphasises the enigmatic
nature of this video; the
audience wonders why their
faces are hidden. The 360
degree movement allows the
audience to view all characters
(members of the band), yet their
backs are turned on each other
which could be said to reiterate
the face that the have had an
argument or attain a distant
relationship.
