QUESTION 1.0

A V-belt system shows two pulleys attached to a shaft supported by bearings at A and C. The
bearing system consists of one deep-groove ball bearing and one roller bearing. The driving pulley
at B turns at a steady speed of 1500rpm. Only bearing at C is expected to support the thrust load
60lbf due to its closer proximity to the thrust load at D. The shaft is made from a 38mm SAE
1095HR rod and may be machined at any part to a minimum size of 18mm diameter to fit the
bearing.
Given that tension P1 = 3000N and P2 = 1000N and length AB = BC = CD = 900mm.
Note: 1-lbf = 4.45N

Determine the most suitable bearings to be mounted at A and C if the designed life of 20000 hrs is
required with overall reliability of 96% for the bearing system.
QUESTION 2.0

An electric motor running at 1400 rpm and developing a torque of 15 Nm is to drive a lubemachine through multiple V-belts. The lube-machine is to run at 350 rpm. It is decided that the
bigger sheave is to have a diameter of 500 mm with center to center distance of 912 mm or less. A
service factor of 1.1 is considered adequate.

Given belt pitch length,

Lp = L + Lc = 2C + ( D + d) +

4C

a) Calculate the belt pitch length Lp and select the suitable V-belt (class and length L)
(Please check and ensure your answer has fullfill all the constraints before proceeding)
b) Determine the adjusted pitch length Lp and verified the new center to center distance is
within the constraint.
c) Determine the number of belts
d) Calculate the belt tensions: Fi , Fc , F1 and F2

QUESTION 3.0

A 1-kW motor is used to drive shaft EFG at a constant speed of 191 rev/min. The torque generated
from the motor is used to drive a machine via the chain sprocket at point B on shaft ABCD by
means of gear F and C. The gear C and gear F have pitch-diameters of b = 250, and c = 125 mm,
respectively. The contact force between the gears is transmitted through the pressure angle = 20.
The gears are milled from carbon steel blank.
a) Find the reaction forces at point A and D if the chain-tension, P = 1333.24N
b) Determine the number of teeth for both gear F and C if module is 2.5 mm.
c) If endurance limits is 40MPa and safety factor n = 1.0, then find an appropriate pinion facewidth to prevent bending failure.
d) Assuming a face-width of 24mm, what is the maximum power that can be transmitted
through a gearset made of steel and the contact stress number limited to 600 MPa?
e) If the number of teeth in gear C is increased to double, explains and shows the equations
you will use to describe the changes in the stresses in shaft AD.
