October Newsletter Grade 1

Dear Families,
Happy October!

English Language Arts We will continue to work on realistic fiction. The

children will practice the following comprehension skills: character analysis, main idea,
story elements (characters, setting, problem, solution) and compare/contrast. Guided
reading groups also meet during the ELA block, during which time the children participate
in lessons that are at their individual instructional levels. Capitalization and ending
punctuation marks, as well as topic development, will be addressed during Writers
Workshop.

Fundations In Unit 3 our phonics instruction will focus on words that contain a
consonant digraph. A digraph consists of 2 letters that make 1 sound (that, shop, when,
chip, sock). In Unit 4, the focus will be on bonus letters (fill, puff, mess).

Math We will continue to work on number sense, along with the concepts of
addition and subtraction. Some of the skills that will be introduced are: adding 3 addends;
how to use a ten frame; making 10 strategy; counting backwards to subtract; and using
addition to subtract. The children will be required to find sums (the answer when adding to
subtract. The children will be required to find sums (the answer when adding), and
differences (the answer when subtracting) to and from 20.

Social Studies We will discuss the general meaning of the Pledge of

Allegiance, and sing national songs. We will also identify examples that show the meaning

of the words: politeness, achievement, courage, honesty, and reliability. Lastly, we will
explore the reasons for celebrating national holidays such as Columbus Day and Halloween.

Science We will investigate patterns in nature such as day/night, the 4

seasons, sunrise/sunset, temperature, foliage changes, animal migration, and insect
activity.

Homework Every Monday, each student will get a homework packet, to be

completed and returned on Friday. Be sure that your child is reading and following all
directions. Our goal is to develop good work/study habits. Lastly, please return the Take
Home Folder and Behavior Log daily.

Learning At Home - The Worcester Public Library offers online reading for students
through Tumblebooks. Students can listen to and read stories online. The website is
www.worcesterlibrary.org. Please also use www.RAZkids.com the log on information was
sent home last month.
A great way to practice math facts, which should be part of your childs nightly homework
routine, is through the use of flashcards. Another great way to practice is by visiting the
website www.factmonster.com
