Setting the Stage

In most communication encounters, we

need to stop and analyze the situation and
have the ability to asses a particular
situation, look for clues, and describe what
you see and say.

What are the components of the

interpersonal communication model?

The Sender, Message, reciever, feed back,

and barriers

The Sender

The sender transmits a message to another

person.

The Message

The message is the element that is

transmitted from one person to another.

The Reciever

The reciever recieves the message from the

sender and "decode" the message and
assign a particular meaning to it. In
recieving and translating the message, you
probaly considered both the verbal and
nonverbal components of the message.

Feedback

The process whereby recievers

communicate back to senders their
understanding of the message. The reciver
may mot percieve the message. Also,
feedback is a two-way interaction rather
that a monologue.

Barriers

Barriers are anything that get in the way

and aect the accuracy of the
communication exchange.

In Serach of the Meaning of the Message

In the process of the message being told

from the sender to the reciever, the
message may have changed. This meani"ng
that we may or may not interpret the
meaining of the various verbal and
nonverbal messages in the same way as the
sender intended.

What is the importance of the perception

of communication?

"People assign meanings to verbal and

nonverbal messages based on their
perception of the intended meaining. In
other words, the reciever's perception of
the words, symbols, and nonverbal
elements used by the sender influences
how the reciever interprets the meaning. It's
not what is said, but what the reciever
percieves to have been said."

Where do the meanings of messages come

from?

From the perception of words, symbols,

and nonverbal elements.

What happens when verbal and nonverbal

messages are not congruent?

The meaning of the message will be

unclear.

What is meant by "Our perception of a

message is aected by our perception of
the individual"?

We don't see the person as a unique

individual, but as a representative of a
particular group.

How can misperceptions be minimized?

Using feedback to verify the meaning of
