cameras work and how to create digital images, appreciate experimental, abstract and traditional
photographic techniques and learn how to display, compress and store photographs on a variety of
platforms.
AIM
1. To enable students to appreciate the fundamental principles, the technical resources and the creative
potential of digital photography.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the application of Digital Photography as an
integral element within design
2. Understand the physical technology and methods responsible for creating digital images
3. Identify how digital photography benefits the industry and aids the print process
Hand In Date: Wednesday 29th March 2017 by 3pm - CT Admin Office.
ASSESSMENT PATTERN
Coursework (100%) The students will produce an evaluative, working journal and a presentation of
photographs. The work will be unsupervised and tutor assessed. You must choose and present your work
with close attention to the relationship/theme. There will be a series of assignments which all relate to the
unit aims and generate content for your final body of work.
Students MUST complete all 3 assignments with high regard to presentation of work. A working blog will
need to show processes involved in creating each of the assignments to include research, development,
using software, hardware and evaluation of final photographs.
Delivery
1.

A working journal (blog)

2.

A presentation of final images either printed, online. You must also supply all final photographs
on a USB or disc.

Students are expected to produce a portfolio of photographic work and associated journal of process
experiments, image plans, drawings, written and visual material, demonstrating both thematic and
technical research and experimentation in technique, format and media.
Completed photographic prints and online showcases should be executed with high regard to
presentation and photographic convention and wherever appropriate work should be fully edited
and presented in a professional manner.

be implied in a picture by the use of
dynamic composition - for example using
powerful diagonal elements in the frame,
or showing people or objects leaving

cut off by it.

The technical aspects of shooting motion are easy: a

The low lighting environment of a live gig presents

several problems to be overcome, the most troublesome being exposure and focus. Film speed 400 and
f2.8 will give you a good overall shot. Unless you are
familiar with the band then you cannot determine what
the lighting will do. Take a spare battery and shoot as
much as possible. Also take a small torch to check
settings etc. Experient with slow shutter speeds to
make the lighting streak.

Technical equipment successfully employed for candid

photography is
typically lightweight, small and
unobtrusive rather than big and intimidating. Timing is
so important with Candid photography so always be
on the look out for an opportunity and carry a small
camera with you. Be sensitive to your subject. In some
countries people will shy away from the camera as
they feel you are taking their soul away by capturing
their image.

TIPS
The!3 general types of portrait photography are: close-ups
or facial shots, upper body shots, or environmental portraits
(where you focus on the subject and the surrounding environment that gives the subject character).! Some of the best
portraits are where the subjects look completely comfortable
like their not looking at a camera.! When people try to smile

It is important to always make sure that the product that you

Photographing Nature Requires Attention

Whether youre photographing wildlife, plants or a wondrous sunset, be aware of your surroundings. Follow these
tips to capture the best opportunities for nature photos:
Be aware of all of your senses: your ear may hear something
that your eyes have missed.
Maintain perspective: when changing locations, check out
where you have just been so you know where to travel next
to get another amazing shot.
Pay attention to your surroundings: look up and down, as
well as side to side.
Study your subjects habits: know how to anticipate an upcoming photo opportunity or when to flee.
Be careful of your angles. Look at the shadows at every
angle - this can help with the mood/texture and also add
depth. Slow film speed, large depth of field, slow shutter =
tripod essential or find a sturdy and straight wall. Look at
abstract, BOLD shapes that pop out. Use a mirror to reflect
light and also add a new perspective.
Look at unique settings to showcase the model and the
clothes etc. Dont confuse this with Glamour Photography.
From the early days to the present Fashion Photographers
were/are always the risk-takers and experiment constantly
with light, subject and colour.
Use colours/non and patterns to create an images. Let the
viewer be intrigued as to the subject.
Use your imagination

Human Form

Photographer Greg Gorman

specialises in Human form.
I dissected each persons face
individually with different techniques, such as lighting, camera
angle, the focal range of various
lenses. You can always hang a
light over someones head and get
an image that looks like the person.
To me, the more interesting images
are ones that leave something to
the imagination.

Get in close and look at obscure angels. Use a macro setting

to photograph the texture of the skin and highlight skin
tones. Play with shadows on the skin.

originally a pair of paintings hinged together. In

modern art the diptych is often just a pair of images
which reflect a common story or theme in each image.
In photography the diptych has become a popular
format. Pairs of closely associated portraits, images or
themed pictures are often used to off-set one another.
In photographic presentation a pair of pictures are
often put together in the same actual image. As a
format, one image file with two pictures is a diptych.

Aleksandra

K ARPOWICZ

How does your day as a photographer look like?

I try to be fairly organised, because
when you work for yourself, if you
dont do something its not going to
get done. Im my own boss. Im a
photographer but also Im my marketing manager, my accountant, my
social media manager, my personal
assistant. I try to get up early, usually 8am and start a day from there
breakfast, coffee and then start
working. Beginning with emails, arranging meeting, arranging shoots,
working on next projects. I make
to do lists for one month, one week
and one day and check what is done
so far.
Where do you get ideas? What
inspires you?
Every single project is inspired by
something different, but the general
interest in people comes from the
fact that Im a very social person.
Friend of mine calls me the most
people person. Its just easy for me

leksandra Karpowicz is a London

based Fine Art photographer. Her work is focused
on peole and human behaviour. She has developed
photography series such as Tribute to Dance,
Triumph of the Body and her latest work Lets Talk
About Sex, which she receive Best Portrait and Visitors
Choice awards in National Open Art Competition as
well she was shorlisted in Women of the Future Award
in Arts&Culture Category. Aleksandra is also a founder of networking platform LoVArts.
Describe your development as a photographer.
What challenges you have faced, your achievements
and aims for future.
Ive got a Masters Degree in Political Science.
Ive worked in politics for a few years, but I found out
that it limits me and its not something I want to do. I
came to London with a decision to completely change
my career. Ive decided to study photography, because
thats what I was interested in for quite a long time.
Ive been taking pictures since I was 7 and even back
then, if you look at my photos, everything is about peo-

ple. I did a one year course at the University of Art at

LCC London College of Communication. Ive started
working as a freelance photographer while I was still at
the University, but I found it very challenging because
I didnt know exactly what I want to do, so I was doing everything: fashion, studio photography, portraits,
photo-journalism - everything I could possibly do. Ive
started doing photos in the studio: the dance series
Tribute to Dance and about body Triumph of the
body. I didnt even have a goal what to do after that, I
just did it because I love that. Somehow these photos
were discovered by one of the galleries in London in
the beginning of last year (2014). I was approached by
the gallery, they wanted to represent me and exhibit my
photos. That was the turning point when I decided that
I dont want to be a photographer anymore, I want to be
a fine art photographer, so thats what Ive focused on.
Ive only started exhibiting my work two years ago, so
its all fresh and new.

to talk to people and its the strongest skill I have. Im always trying to
make people feel comfortable, because I feel comfortable with people.
Every series is inspired by something different. Tribute to Dance
is about dance, obviously, because
I love dance and I love music. Unfortunately a few years ago I had an
accident and I had a surgery on my
foot that caused me not being able
to walk. couple of months. It took
me a few years to recover. Tribute
to Dance is my expression of something I love but unable to do. Thank
God I can dance again, but will never be able to do things model does in
my photographs.
Triumph of the body is almost an
extension of the Tribute to Dance,
it focuses on appreciating human
body and form. Both projects are
also about capturing the moment.
In Tribute to Dance capturing a
moment is capturing a particular second, but in Triumph of the
Body its capturing a moment when
we are beautiful, young and strong.
The project is focused on the beau-

ty, but beauty passes like everything

else in life.
A massive step further was my
latest project Lets talk about sex.
Its a psychological study. I went
through a visual appreciation of human form, trying to dig deeper to
who people are. The whole project
is inspired by academic research and
books by Alfred Kinsey, which were
written in 1948 and 1953, when sex
topic didnt exist. I did two months
of research on that subject. Human
sexual behavior depends on biological factors such as age, sexual orientation and gender and social aspects:
who are their parents, where were
they born, where did they grow up,
who are their friends, their social
circle and the most interesting one
religion. All of those aspects shape
sexual behavior. I did a psychological experiment. Ive invited 48
men and 48 women aged between
18 and 76 of different backgrounds
and different races. Ive asked them
12 questions, which were meant to
help them clearly visualise a person
they want to present in the session.

Lastly . . .
This module requires you to take photographs throughout the year - on average
about 100 a week. The assignments are there to help you start to compile a body
of work. Carry your camera with you at all times. A little notebook is also good.
Try to think about a consistent style - research other photographers
Constantly seek feedback on your work
Plan ahead - photographs, locations, equipment, software, storage, blog,
sketchbook, tasks, save your work/back up!
Students that dedicate time and effort will be rewarded
Important to enjoy your exploration and journey with your camera.
