PERSEVERANCE

 Perseverance

All throughout the life of the believer fundamental worship involves two things: being in
constant pursuit of a life based entirely on the principles of the Qur’an and avoidance of behaviours
contradicting its commandments. The term “patience” encompasses the virtues of being persistent,
brooking no neglect of or delay in worship, and protecting oneself from the erosion of devoutness.
That is why patience and endurance are two separate concepts. Endurance implies a sense of
objection and resistance. It is actually suffering difficulties or pain. The patience believers
demonstrate, on the other hand, is totally different: A patient believer does not feel defeated or
demoralized. On the contrary, he feels himself closer to Allah and consequently finds joy in any
distresses befalling him. This is surely a source of ardour and excitement for believers.
Many of the verses in the Qur’an enjoin perseverance:

َ‫ك ۖ َّ ََل يَ ْسز َِخفٌََّّهَ الَّ ِزييَ ََل يُْ ِلٌُْى‬ ِ َّ ‫فَبصْ ِجشْ إِ َّى َّ ْع َذ‬So patiently persevere: for the promise of Allah is,
ٌّ ‫َّللا َح‬
indeed true: nor let those shake your firmness, who have (themselves) no certainty of faith. Fasbir inna wa’daLLaahi
haqqunwwa laa yasta-khiffan-nakallazeena laa youqinoun.(Ar-Rum, 30:60)

َ‫َّللا لَ َعلَّ ُى ْن رُ ْف ِل ُْى‬

َ َّ ‫صب ِثشُّا َّ َسا ِثطُْا َّارَّمُْا‬
َ َّ ‫ َيب أَيُّ َِب الَّ ِزييَ آ َهٌُْا اصْ ِجشُّا‬O you who believe! Persevere in
patience and constancy; vie in such perseverance; strengthen each other; and fear Allah, so that you may prosper.
Yaaa’ayyu-hallazeena aama-nushirou wa saabirou wa raabitou; wattaquLLaaha la’al-lakum tuflihoun.(Al-Imran,
3:200)

َ‫ك ِه َّوب يَ ْو ُىشُّى‬

ٍ ‫ض ْي‬
َ ‫ه فِي‬ ِ َّ ‫ص ْجشُنَ إِ ََّل ِث‬
ُ َ‫بَّلل ۖ َّ ََل رَ ْ ضَ ْى َعلَ ْي ِِ ْن َّ ََل ر‬ َ ‫ َّاصْ جِشْ َّ َهب‬And be patient, for your
patience is but from Allah; nor grieve over them: (i.e. the unbelievers) and do not distress yourself because of their
plots. Was-bir wa maa sabruka illaa biLLaahi wa laa tahzan alayhim wa laa taku fee zay-qim-mimmaa yamkuroun.(An-
Nahl,16: 127)

It is stated, moreover, in the Qur’an that the believers will be put to the test with patience:

َ ‫ َّلٌََ ْجلُ ًََّْ ُى ْن َحزَّ ٰىٔ ًَ ْعلَ َن ْال ُو َ ب ُِ ِذييَ ِه ٌْ ُى ْن َّاللَّب ِث ِشييَ ًََّ ْجلُ َْ أَ ْ َج‬And We shall try you until We test those
‫بس ُو ْن‬
among you who strive their utmost and persevere in patience; and We shall try your reported (mettle). Wa lanab-
luwannakum hattaa na’lamal-mujaahideena minkum was-saabireena wa nabluwa akhbaarakum.(Muhammad,47: 31)

ٓ‫َبة ِه ْي لَ ْجلِ ُى ْن َّ ِهيَ ا َّي ِرييَ أَ ْش َش ُوْا أَ ًر‬ َ ‫لَزُ ْجلَ ُْ َّى فِي أَ ْه َْالِ ُى ْن َّأَ ًْفُ ِس ُى ْن َّلَزَ ْس َوع َُّي ِهيَ الَّ ِزييَ أُّرُْا ْال ِىز‬
ُ
ِ ‫ َوثِيشً ا ۖ َّإِ ْى رَلْ جِشُّا َّرَزَّمُْا فَ ِ َّى َر ٰى ِلهَ ِه ْي ع َْض ِم ْاا ُه‬You shall certainly be tried and tested in your possessions
‫ْس‬
and in your personal selves; and you shall certainly hear much that will grieve you, from those who received the Book
before you and from those who worship many gods. But if you persevere patiently, and guard against evil, that will
be a determining factor in all affairs. Latubla-wunna feee amwaalikum wa anfusikum; wa latasma’unna minallazeena
outul-Kitaaba min-qablikum wa minallazeena ashrakouu azan-kaseeraa. Wa’in-tasbirou wa tattaqou fa’inna zaalika min
azmil-umour.(Al-Imran, 3:186)

Perseverance is also the key to the victory of believers. Allah gives strength to the believers
provided that they persevere:

 ‫صبثِ َشحٌ يَ ْغلِجُْا ِهبئَزَي ِْي ۖ َّإِ ْى يَ ُى ْي ِه ٌْ ُى ْن‬ َ ‫َّللاُ َع ٌْ ُى ْن َّ َعلِ َن أَ َّى فِي ُى ْن‬
َ ٌ‫ض ْعفًب ۖ فَ ِ ْى يَ ُى ْي ِه ٌْ ُى ْن ِهبئَخ‬ َّ َ‫ْاْلىَ َ فَّف‬
َ‫َّللاُ َه َ اللَّب ِث ِشيي‬ ِ َّ ‫ف َي ْغ ِلجُْا أَ ْلفَي ِْي ِث ِ ْر ِى‬
َّ َّ ۖۗ ‫َّللا‬ ٌ ‫ أَ ْل‬If there are a hundred of you, patient and persevering, they will
vanquish two hundred, and if a thousand, they will vanquish two thousand, with the leave of Allah: for Allah is
with those who patiently persevere. Al-aana khaffa-faLLaahu ankum wa’alima anna fee-kum za’faa. Fa’iny-yakum-
minkum-mi’atun Saabiratuny-yag-libou mi-atayn. Wa’iny-yakum-minkum alfuny-yag-libouu al-fayni bi’izniLLaah;
waLLaahu ma’as-Saabireen. (Al-Anfal,8: 66)

َ‫َّللا َه َ اللَّب ِث ِشيي‬ َ ُ‫َّللا َّ َسسُْلََُ َّ ََل رٌََبصَ عُْا فَزَ ْف َشلُْا َّر َْز‬
َ َّ ‫َت ِسي ُ ُى ْن ۖ َّاصْ ِجشُّا ۖ إِ َّى‬ َ َّ ‫ َّأَ ِطيعُْا‬And obey
Allah and His Messenger; and fall into no disputes, lest you lose heart and your resolve weaken; and be patient and
persevering: For Allah is with those who patiently persevere. Wa’atee-uLLaaha wa Rasou-lahou wa laa tanaza’ou
fataf-shalou wa tazhaba reehukum was-birou; innaLLaaha ma’as-Saabireen. (Al-Anfal,8: 46)

Perseverance is an essential attribute of a believer and it is also the key to the will of Allah and to
the attainment of heaven. In one verse, Allah states the attributes of believers “(They are) those who
persevere in patience, and put their trust on their Lord.” َ‫علَ ٰىٔ َسثِّ ِِ ْن يَز ََْ َّولُْى‬ َ َ‫الَّ ِزيي‬Allazeena sabarou
َ َّ ‫صجَشُّا‬
wa’alaa Rabbihim yatawakkaloun. (An-Nahl, 16:42). The importance of the issue is emphasized in other
verses:

ِ ‫ص َجشُّا أَجْ َشُُ ْن ِثأَحْ َس‬

َۖ‫ي َهب َوبًُْا َي ْع َولُْى‬ َ َ‫ق ۗۖ َّلٌََ ْ ِض َي َّي الَّ ِزيي‬ ِ َّ ‫ َهب ِع ٌْ َذ ُو ْن َي ٌْفَ ُذ ۖ َّ َهب ِع ٌْ َذ‬What is
ٍ ‫َّللا َثب‬
with you must vanish: what is with Allah will endure. And We will certainly bestow, on those who patiently
persevere, their reward according to the best of their actions. Maa indakum yanfadu wa maa indaLLaahi baaq. Wa
lanajzi-yannallazeena sabarouu ajrahum-bi’ahsani maa kaanou ya’maloun. (Al-Nahl, 16:96)

َ ‫ أُّلَ ٰىـ ِئهَ يُ ْ ضَ ّْ ىَ ْال ُغشْ فَخَ ِث َوب‬Those are the ones who will be rewarded with
‫ص َجشُّا َّيُلَمَّْْ ىَ ِفي َِب َر ِ يَّخً َّ َس ََل ًهب‬
the highest place in heaven, because of their patient constancy: therein shall they be met with salutations and peace.
Ulaaa’ika yujzawnal-gurfata bimaa sabarou wa yulaqqawna feehaa tahiyyatanwwa salaamaa, (Al-Furqan, 25:75)

‫اصْْ ا ثِ ْبل َوشْ َح َو ِخ‬

َ ََْ ‫لج ِْش َّر‬ َ ََْ ‫ثُ َّن َوبىَ ِهيَ الَّ ِزييَ آ َهٌُْا َّر‬
َّ ‫اصْْ ا ثِبل‬ Then will he be of those who believe, and
enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. Thumma kaana
minallazeena aamanou wa tawaasaw bis_Sabri wa tawaasaw bil-Marhamah.(Al-Balad,90: 17)

The believers ask for perseverance:

َ‫ِّذ أَ ْلذَا َهٌَب َّا ًْلُشْ ًَب َعلَٔ ْالمَْْ ِم ْال َىب ِف ِشيي‬
ْ ‫َّثَج‬ َ ‫َّلَ َّوب َث َش ُصّا ِل َ بلُْدَ َّ ُجٌُْ ِد ٍِ لَبلُْا َسثٌََّب أَ ْف ِش ْغ َعلَ ْيٌَب‬
‫صجْشً ا‬
When they advanced to meet Goliath and his forces, they prayed: “Our Lord! Pour out constancy on us and make our
steps firm: Help us against those that reject faith.” Wa lammaa barazou li-Jaalouta wa junoudihee qaalou Rabbanaaa
‘afrig alaynaa sabranw-wa sabbit ‘aqdamanaaa wan-surnaa alal-Qawmil-kaa-fireen.(Al-Baqara, 2:250)
