RES MINOICAE ET MYCENAEAE

ROZPRAWY. COMMENTATIONES.
Federica GONZATO (Udine University, Italia), Non Verbal memory Medium and the
Instrumental use of the past in the Mycenaean World. A
Methodologica Approach.
Abstract: The concept of historical memory and re-use of the past has aquired an increasing importance in
the last decades and has been investigated from different aspects, regarding its link with history (criticism) and
its use in socio-political strategies. Some observations about the Mycenaean world are also possible, in particular
regarding the instrumentalisation of the past, archaeologically detectable through monuments. Another feature
closely related to the main theme is the opposite concept of damnatio memoriae, here treated from a
methodological aspect.

Serguey SHARYPKIN (Piotrkw Trybunalski), Mycenaean Dual Reconsidered.
Abstract: Apart from the normal dual forms we find, in Linear B texts, some other functioning also as dual but
aberrant from synchronic point of view. The adjective a-ko-ro-we is attested both in singular a-ko-ro-we =
akhrowes and in dual: a-ko-ro-we-e = akhrowehe, before the ideogram ZE 1 (= ) Yet we
find also a-ko-ro-we-i ZE 1. This form can represent only the dative-locative singular. Thus, we are compelled
to understood it as a graphic error: the scribe transferred the alternation -e : -i (-ei :-i), normal for the dativelocative, to the dual, where only the forms in -e = - were possible.
A further problem is connected with the forms in -a (instead of normal -o) of some feminine nouns of
the 1st declension: a-ke-ti-ri-ja MUL 2 KN Ai 739, we-ra-te-ja MUL 2 KN Ap 618+623, di-pte-ra 2 and pe-di-ra 2
PY Ub 1318, pa-ke-te-ja ri-ne-ja MUL 2 PY Ab 745 and Ab 746, --mi-ni-ja 2 Vn 46 a.o. We could
interpret this ending without any problems as -, which is well attested in the I millennium. But such an
interpretation does not do for the II millennium B.C., because Mycenaean - would have given -h not -in
Ionic-Attic of the first millennium B.C.
I believe also that ko-wa 2, which very long ago had attracted attention of mycenologists, neither
represent an archaism (*-i), as V. Pisani believed, nor can be interpreted as a prodromos of an innovation (-),
as M. Lejeune proposed. As demonstrate forms of adjectives me-wi-jo / me-u-jo (= mewis, ) and
me-zo (= meizs), it conceals the form of singular used instead of the normal dual in -o = -.
It would have not been possible to distinguish korw two girls from korw two boys if scribes had used the
same ending for the masculine and feminine gender. Thus, the form ko-wa 2 is not a dual form at all, because
me-u-jo / me-wi-jo and me-zo can conceal nothing else but the singular forms of these adjectives and ko-wa 2
must be hence singular, as well. The same must be true for further instances of feminine nouns in -a of the 1st
declension before the number 2.
