It’s official: we are probably the first magazine in this region to integrate mobile tags
to create a truly ‘multimedia magazine.’ A few publications (Golf Digest, Wakeboarding, 4 Mail Shot & Raising the Bar
Self ) are experimenting with it in other parts of the world. Is it a gimmick? We are
engaging with developers from all over world and everyone is excited about it. But in 5 ShopCall

We suspect mobile tags might work for Tempo. Our research shows us that our
readership is characterized by high smart phone penetration; most fall in the 16-35 6 What’s Hot in Abu Dhabi
age group and are tech savvy. We also think tags reflect the spirit of our magazine:
unique, edgy and innovative. But we also realize that not everyone has a smart phone, 7 World Cup Fever
or indeed wants to engage in the experience. So we will also try to keep tags minimal

‘The Versatile Running Mommy’

Kera, from Utah, USA is a freelance
writer and designer living in Abu Dhabi
with her two children, and husband.
She blogs about her life....
Tempo: Tell us a bit about yourself.
Kera: I’m originally from a small farming community
and living in Utah, USA before moving to the UAE. I
blog about my experiences in www.runningmommy04.
blogspot.com and I write about life, love, and being a
mom on the run. My husband, two boys and I currently
live in Abu Dhabi, UAE. I love running, my family, my
faith, and being surrounded by pretty things. I love
meeting new people so please feel free to drop
me a line!
T: How was it moving to Abu Dhabi from Utah?
K: I vividly remember the physical pains of moving
to the UAE. Getting off the plane with two small
children and all our worldly possessions, while trying
to emotionally ‘keep it together’ was no small feat.
I entered a different world. As an African-American
living in Utah, USA, I knew what it felt like to be a
minority. My perspective, however, changed a bit that
night at the airport.
T: How were your initial days in Abu Dhabi?
K: Abu Dhabi is my first taste of the world outside

America. We didn’t have a car upon arriving here- only
my trusty jogging stroller. We walked everywhere.
I remember my feet and back aching. But I felt alive,
quickly becoming in tune with this city so far
from home. Men in kanduras, women in abayas. The
smells of the Lebanese grill, the heavenly aromas
of curries and spices from India. The radiating heat.
Knowing nothing of it before, I was beginning to fall in
love. And fall I have- and as we prepare to return to the
States on holiday, I reflect on what I’ve learned from
this great city.
T: How did you meet your husband?
K: I’m originally from Chicago, and I moved to Utah
when I was 18 for a fresh start. I met McSean at a
college party, and we were engaged 10 days later. It
was a whirlwind romance, and I’m so lucky to have
found someone so perfect for me! We lived happily
in Utah and started a family, and then moved to
Abu Dhabi after receiving an exciting offer from his
current employer.
T: How long has it been in Abu Dhabi?
K: We have been here as a family since last September
and are under contract for three years.
T: What do usually write in your blogs?
K: Running Mommy is a lifestyle blog which means I
can write about whatever I want! I tend to usually focus
on motherhood, interior design, running & fitness, and
my own personal musings.
T: Why the name ‘running mommy’?
K: I quickly came up with the name without giving
it much thought two years ago, but I really feel
it suits me well. I obviously enjoy running, but I
sometimes feel like I’m running through life, so it’s
unexpectedly clever.
T: Since you love running, do you get to exercise
your love for running here?
K: Nearly every day, I get to fulfill my passion for
running. We live near to the Corniche, and in the
mornings, I take my boys in the jogger for an hour
long run along that beautiful path that showcases Abu
Dhabi’s beautiful ocean and skyline views.
T: Living by the Corniche must be quite inspiring,
isn’t it?
K: I’ve seen a lot on my runs. I’ve met some of my very
best friends on its blue bricks. As a writer, it’s on those
runs where I’ve received inspiration for a story. It’s also
a time to reflect on my role as a mother. I think I’ve
stretched and grown in those roles and more; friend,
writer, wife, and mother. I owe that to this place.

Location: Hilton Hotel
One of the oldest restaurants in Abu Dhabi, Hemingway’s specializes in
South American cuisine and sure does a good job in keeping their standards
high! This nicely positioned restaurant is popular among sports fans to
spend their afternoons and late evenings watching major sports events
on their well placed TVs. As for the lunch served, there is little to say about
the initial bread basket but the quesadillas is worth applauding. This can
be enjoyed with fresh sour cream, guacamole and salsa sauce. Best of all
is the cucumber and lime juice, a combination that is hardly ever seen on
most restaurant menus. A perfect drink to beat the heat, won’t you say? We
recommend taking your business colleagues for a late lunch and let the accounts deal with the upshot bill!

Myfave recipe Coconut Date Fill

Miss Habeeba, a resident of Abu Dhabi for the last eleven years and a mother of two, has
sent us her favorite recipe called the ‘Coconut Date Fill’. She recommends it and says her
children just love it.

Ingredients
Dates 200 grams
Coconut (grated) 1 whole
Pistachios crushed 20 grams
Almond crushed 20 grams
Plain flour 100 grams
Oil for deep fry
Preparation
Make a paste of grated coconut, dates,
pistachios, and almonds. Roll them into balls.
Next, make a thick paste of plain flour and
add salt to taste. Dip the balls in the flour
and deep fry them and then voila, a light
delicious snack.

I remember when I used to live in the US, I used to go into
a coffee shop in Seattle and ask for a ‘croissant’ (which I
pronounced crrroissson—as you would in France, you get
the picture...), and the lady there looked puzzled and asked
me to repeat it a few times. Then she nodded her head with
recognition ‘oh, you mean a crescent?’ It jarred my nerves
but I acquiesced, knowing this would be the only way I was
going to be served. ‘Yes, a…crescent.’ I remember going
into another café, not too far from the first, and asking for
a ‘crescent,’ and I was met with a bemused and superior
nod ‘yes, we do have “croissants”’ (pronounced the French
way). Right then I felt compromised. I felt like a total country
bumpkin, all because I wasn’t ready to stand my ground.
So since then the croissant thing has been a sensitive point
with me—I decided that l would defend my opinion on
croissants with conviction and honour—whether I am in
Seattle, Bangkok or in Abu Dhabi.
So this is why my rant is about croissant. What typically
happens here is you walk into a coffee shop and ask for a
croissant and a latte. Without you even asking, they pop the
croissant in the microwave and serve it to you all soft and
soggy. I know that I am courting controversy on this one as
there are admittedly two distinct schools of thought. One
that says it is OK to microwave a croissant if you’re in a hurry,
and the other which states clearly that you should never,
ever, ever, ever microwave a croissant. I reckon with this one
I will have every patriotic French person on my side.
The denigration of the croissant—by microwave— has to
stop. You could if you were a bachelor warm it up in an
oven, or even eat it cold. But microwave? Never!
There is also a protocol for eating a croissant. Let’s get one
thing straight… it is not eaten like a pizza! First of all, a
croissant should come to you in pristine condition: fresh
from the oven and flaky to the touch. A croissant by its
definition is a dainty food; it requires a certain amount of
self-control and a lot of poise. You should be able to bite
into the croissant while neatly capturing the flaking into

The UAE might be one of the few countries in the world in which
you would find the local citizens donning their traditional garb
in spite of the rapid-fire pace of development taking place at the

quite likely that he will be found at his desk in the sparkling white
robe and matching headgear common to the region.

Dear Um Ayman
I have an awkward problem. One of my friends is a borrower.
She likes to borrow heels, purses, blouses, and even jewelry. I
lend her my stuff, as do my other friends, but she borrows from
me more than the others because we have the same shoe size
and she says that she ‘likes my style’ in clothes. These episodes
of borrowing are not all the time, but every couple of months.
She’s good about returning things, so it is difficult to say no.
But the last time I lent her one of my dresses there was a small
stain on the back that I’m sure wasn’t there when I gave it to
her. Now she has told me that she wants to me lend her one
of my favourite gowns for an upcoming wedding and I really
am afraid that she may ruin it. I don’t mind lending her other
things, but not my gowns. What should I do? I know if I say no
that it could hurt our friendship and make me seem petty in
front of all my friends.

try being more honest. Have you tried talking to your other
friends how they feel about her borrowing habit? While it’s cute
to feel so close to someone that you don’t mind wearing their
things, and God knows that it is good for the environment to
‘reduce and reuse’ I think you need to draw boundaries that
YOU are comfortable with. Maybe the reason she borrows more
from you than your friends is because you are a pushover. Do
what is comfortable for you. Try telling her ‘I don’t mind lending
you my shoes and purses (or whatever) but I find it hard to
share my gowns’ and give her your reasons….because they are
expensive, they need to be well preserved, I prefer people see the
gowns on me first, whatever.

to say no to my friend about a certain shirt I know that’s not

A World Away
I am now 10 time zones away from Abu Dhabi
after two days and almost twenty hours of sitting
in an airline seat. Believe me, this is bad on the
body and mind. The irony is that I am still in a
sandbox, but that of the United States’ desert
Southwest instead of the dunes of the Arabian
peninsula.
The sand is red here and there are mountains
towering to 4000 meters nearby so the scenery is
a bit more vertical than in Abu Dhabi. My current
location lacks the beaches though. I haven’t been
back here in over a year but felt I had never left. It’s
funny that when I am in Abu Dhabi, my place in
the U. S. seems but a distant and dim memory and
vice versa, almost like a dream.
Travelling such vast distances makes you realize
how small the world really is and how a couple
of day’s travel can quickly put one in touch with
family, friends and familiar places. No wonder
the physical body protests the sudden change. I
am still in the jet lag fog but hope things will be
clearer in a day or two.
One word of advice, do not press the cabin crew
call button from your seat, especially numerous
times from the coach cabin. A fellow passenger
across the aisle, who did not seem a frequent flyer,
did this to summon the flight attendents several
times to ask dumb questions and to complain. If
