INTRODUCTION AND
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR
National Institute of Design is a multidisciplinary
institute in the field of design education and research.
Its design education programmes have also earned their
place in the top 25 European and Asian educational
programmes in the world. By an Act of Parliament,
in July 2014, the institute has been declared as an
Institution of National Importance by the NID Act
(No.18 of 2014) and has come into force with effect
from 16th September, 2014. An experience of more than
five decades in the field of design education, research,
application of advanced teaching methodologies, and
unparalleled design research projects have together
crowned the National Institute of Design (NID) with
international repute. It has been recognized as a
scientific and industrial research organization by the
Department of Science and Technology, Government
of India.
From being a single campus institute, NID has grown
into a multicampus institute with a national and
international profile. NID now has two extension
campusesthe Post Graduate Campus at Gandhinagar
and the R&D Campus at Bengaluru.
From an institute mainly providing undergraduate
programmes, NID has become one of the best design
institutes in the world with a graduate programme
(B.Des.) spreading across eight design disciplines and
seventeen sector-specific post-graduate programmes
(M.Des.) in diverse design domains, state-of-the-art
infrastructural facilities such as the Skill Development
Labs, Knowledge Management Centre, Information
Technology (IT) Centre, and Design Vision Centre.
These have helped NID establish its leadership and preeminence among various design institutions.
NID continues to be an aspirational Institutional Global
Brand for the youth. This is manifested in the increasing
demand to secure admission at NID. There has been a
positive increase in the intake of students, from about
83 in 2000 to 360 in the academic year 201415. Also,
the number of students convocating from the institute
each year has undergone a change; it has increased from
35 in 2000 to 271 in 2014.
NID has also signed collaborative agreements with over
60 premier design institutes across the world, facilitating
increased international exposure for students and
faculty. Business Week USA listed NID as providing one
of the top 25 European & Asian design programmes

leading to the Graduate Diploma in Design, and
the PG programme of a two-and-a-half year
duration leading to the Postgraduate Diploma in
Design.
The Professional Education Programmes of the
institute operate through five main faculty streams
with eighteen diverse design disciplines:

Photography and printing studios, video and
animation studios, and skilled technical staff assist
design students in their learning process. All these
studios are continuously upgraded and equipped
to handle professional work and sponsored
research in addition to meeting with the training
needs of students.
K-Portal
A web-based information system was developed
in-house to facilitate faculty, students, and staff to
come to a common platform and bring together
content from various distributed resources and
systems using information technology in an
amalgamated form. It serves as a presentation
service to the user, disseminating complete,
accurate and timely information available online.
Its notable features are:
Online student assessment
Students academic reports such as GPA, SGPA,
and others
KMC catalogue search
Digital resources
Open electives registration on real-time

RESEARCH THRUST
The Research & Publications department at NID
undertook various activities that focus on the
academic and developmental aspects of design.
These initiatives reflect the focused vision and
research acumen of the faculty and students of the
institute. Eight faculty members have taken up
design research projects of their interest. This has
resulted in more research papers being published.
The Research & Publications department provided
research/project opportunities to thirteen
students.
New Initiatives
1. NID-Indian Railways Design Centre
A committee consisting of executive directors
of various departments from the Railway Board,
Ministry of Railways visited NID on April 3 & 4,
2014 for better appreciation of NIDs potential
utilization of the proposed Railway Design Centre
at NID. The committee visited both Ahmedabad
and Gandhinagar campuses and interacted with
faculty and staff members. A joint meeting was
held with all stakeholders. The committee will
apprise the Railway Board of the same and it is

OUTREACH PROGRAMMES
NIDs Outreach Programmes extend the
institutes experience and training facilities to
the service of those outside its regular education
and client service activities. These programmes
help build a network of design collaboration
towards economic and social priorities between
the institute and organisations, and groups, and
individuals all over India. These networks help
extend design application to those areas that are
still new to design.

AUDITORS REPORT
Report on the Financial Statements
We have audited the accompanying financial statements of NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF DESIGN (the Institute)
which comprise the Balance Sheet as on 31 March, 2015, and the Income and Expenditure Account for the year then
ended, and a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information.
Managements Responsibility for the Financial Statements
Management is responsible for the preparation of these financial statements that give a true and fair view of
the financial position and financial performance of the Institute in accordance with the applicable Accounting
Standards. This responsibility includes the design, implementation and maintenance of internal control relevant to
the preparation and presentation of the financial statements that give a true and fair view and are free from material
misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.
Auditors Responsibility
Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our
audit in accordance with the Standards on Auditing issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Those
Standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable
assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement.
ANNUAL ACCOUNTS
201415
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial
statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditors judgment, including the assessment of the risks of
material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments,
the auditor considers internal control relevant to the Institutes preparation and fair presentation of the financial
statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances. An audit also includes
evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of the accounting estimates made
by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements.
We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit
opinion.
Opinion
In our opinion and to the best of our information and according to the explanations given to us, the financial
statements give a true and fair view in conformity with the Accounting principles generally accepted in India:
(a) in the case of the Balance Sheet, of the state of affairs of the Institute as on 31 March, 2015; and
(b) in the case of the Income and Expenditure Account, of the deficit for the year ended on that date.
