OVERVIEW
Kanyakumari

in India is very much


famous for its location and as its the
point where the three main seas meet,
it attracts thousands of tourists every
year. Another main reason why this
place is also famous is for Devi
Kanyakumari Temple. The temple is
located at the seashore and the
surrounding sea to it makes it look
really beautiful. This temple is said to
be over 3000 year old.
The temple also has a mention in the
legends like Ramayana, Mahabharata,
and Yajurveda and also in the Sangam
age works Manimekalai and
Puranaanooru. The temple is also one
of the 51 Shaktipeethams in India and
here the Goddess Satis back is said to
have fallen. The temple also has
recognition for being one of the
hundred and eight Durga Alayas and
is dedicated to Goddess Durga.

The temple has a main entrance in


the northern side and the eastern
side of the temple remains closed
most of the time. All the devotees and
the visitors of the temple take
entrance to the temple from the
Northern gate and the Eastern side
of the temple is opened only during
some festivals, when the deity is
taken out for the ceremonial bath.
The Eastern Door is also opened on
Edavam, Karkkidakam, known as
Capricorn and Cancer, during
Navaratri and in the month of
Vrischikam. Devotees can go to the
Navaratri Mandapam that connects
to the second corridor in the temple
which also encircles the main shrine.
Visitors can have a clear view of the
deity from here before going in front
of the sanctum sanctorum.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Kanyakumari temple is well connected by Air
and Railways both. The nearest Airport is
Thiruvananthapuram International
Airport,which is about 85 kms away and the
nearest Railway station is Kanyakumari
Junction which is about 7 kms away.
The temple opens at 6.00 am in the morning and
closes at 8.00 pm in the night.
Navarathri festival is the biggest festival that is
celebrated in the temple.

VISITOR INFORMATION

Footwear is not allowed inside the temple.


You could take pictures of the premises but
photography inside the temple is not allowed.
Keep the temple premises clean and do not litter.
Do not throw away the Prasad samagri in the
temple premises.
Do make sure you are wearing decent clothes and
avoiding wearing shorts and revealing dresses.
Spitting in the temple premises is a punishable
offence.
You can offer fruits or flowers to deities.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time to visit Devi Kanyakumari Temple is


between September to February. The temperature is
really nice during this period and you will also be able
to witness some of the biggest festivals that are
celebrated in the temple.
