Background Hypersomnia occur in 27% of patients with stroke and about 5% hypersomnia persistent poststroke. Some research suggests that long sleep duration increase mortality in patients with stroke. This study
aims to determine the relationship between hypersomnia in ischemic stroke patients and clinical outcomes
based on The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
Methods The design of this study was a comparative cross-sectional, that was perform from 1 st April to 15th
August 2016 in Hasanuddin University Teaching Hospital and satellites. Sample consist of 30 hospitalized
patients with ischemic stroke (head CT scan showed infarction) onset 1 st to 3rd day. We used Sleep Diary Test
to record sleep duration then sample categorized as hypersomnia group if sleep duration 10 hours/day. The
statistic analyze used Statistical Product and Service Solutions version16.
Results Hypersomnia group consist of 11 sample (6 male, 5 women) and control consist of 19 sample (10
male, 9 female). This study showed significance of clinical outcomes from hypersomnia group p=0.02 vs
control (non hypersomnia) group p=0,00 used Wilcoxon rank test. Velocity NIHSS/7 days for hypersomnia
group was -23.7674 vs control group -26.2096 used T-Test. There was no significance between the lesion
thalamus (p=0,2) with hypersomnia so did lesion in the left hemisphere (p=0,5) used Chi Square test.
Conclusion Clinical outcomes hypersomnia group (p=0,02) are worse than controls (p = 0.00), with velocity
NIHSS /7 day for hypersomnia group were -23.7674 vs control -26.2096.
