Read the text and indicate if the sentences below are true (T) or false (false).
Many Americans dont usually go out with friends in the evening. They dont go out to
dinner or go shopping. What do they do? They relax at home. In fact, its their favorite
activity about 90% of Americans stay at home in the evening.
And what about young people? Well, they spend a lot of time at home, too. American high
school students study for 3 hours a week and watch TV for 18 hours a week.

So, are Americans lazy? No, theyre not. 80% of Americans have hobbies. Hobbies are fun,
interesting, free-time activities like sports, reading, music and computers. Americans stay
busy! Peter is a good example of this. He is an American chef and he doesnt have much
time to go out with friends. He works in a coffee shop and he thinks its hard work. He gets
up early, and he works late, so he doesnt have much time to go out with friends. It is
important for him to relax, but when he has a day or a night off he prefers to stay home, ask
for a good pizza and watch TV.
Peters boss, Olivie, is a French man who always works hard too. He studies English at
night. Hes a quiet person and he doesnt talk a lot, but he has a good relationship with
Peter. He likes living in the US, but he thinks that Americans prefer to stay home because
they dont have very good restaurants. French people really enjoy going out for dinner.
Food and wine are very important in their culture. In addition, women love to go shopping
because fashion is famous in France.
American and French people definitely have different hobbies. They have fun and relax in
different ways. They are two different cultures.

Read the text WORKING IN THE TOURISM INDUSTRY and choose the correct
answer for each question.
WORKING IN THE TOURISM INDUSTRY
When people think about working in the tourism industry, they usually
think in becoming a flight attendant or a pilot. But there are many other
job opportunities in tourism. These can include working in hotels, travel
agencies and restaurants, or more specifically tourism related services,
such as the information desk, the money exchange office, the check-indesk, the security check, and customs and immigration.
Working in a hotel, for example, can be really fun and interesting. It
includes helping the guests, guiding them, offering room service,
preparing the meals and making hotel room reservations. JanethArnott is
a receptionist at a Hilton Hotel and she loves her job! She says her
favorite part of her work is meeting people from all parts of the world. In
addition, she gets invitations to travel around the world, to stay in
different hotels and to take training courses. This helps her to explain
the difference between single and double rooms to customers and
guests and to talk about hotel services in a clear way.
Training and education in the tourism industry is necessary. Today
everybody needs to learn more and more everyday. Technology is
moving fast and the industry and its employees have to go with
technology to make the clients get tickets, bills and information fast.
Now it is not necessary to be in a meeting room or in a conference room

to sell a product or a service, or to explain something. Whats app, Icloud, Dropbox, Facebook, Twitter and other applications and social
networks are becoming our principal instruments to work, study, sell,
buy, learn and have fun! And the tourism industry cannot be the
exception.
The tourism industry is very nice for employees and customers.
However, it also demands hard work, and there are some disadvantages
if you work in tourism. For example, you have to work shifts, that is
working very early in the morning from 4:00 am to 10:00, or very late at
night from 10:00 pm to 4:00 am. You are lucky when you get the 10 am
shift. Another negative aspect is when you have to work for people that
are on vacation. In that moment, you cant have fun.
As Janeth, our Hilton Hotel receptionist says, her job in the tourism
industry also makes her have fun and meet people. And she can do this
because she speaks English and she is learning French too. Languages
are very important in todays world. And of course, a friendly and helpful
personality is also necessary to work in tourism. So, are you ready to get
a job in the tourism industry?

Texto de la pregunta
Read the text and indicate if the sentences below are true (T) or false (false).
Many Americans dont usually go out with friends in the evening. They dont go out to dinner or go shopping.
What do they do? They relax at home. In fact, its their favorite activity about 90% of Americans stay at home
in the evening.
And what about young people? Well, they spend a lot of time at home, too. American high school students
study for 3 hours a week and watch TV for 18 hours a week.
So, are Americans lazy? No, theyre not. 80% of Americans have hobbies. Hobbies are fun, interesting, freetime activities like sports, reading, music and computers. Americans stay busy! Peter is a good example of
this. He is an American chef and he doesnt have much time to go out with friends. He works in a coffee shop
and he thinks its hard work. He gets up early, and he works late, so he doesnt have much time to go out with
friends. It is important for him to relax, but when he has a day or a night off he prefers to stay home, ask for a
good pizza and watch TV.
Peters boss, Olivie, is a French man who always works hard too. He studies English at night. Hes a quiet
person and he doesnt talk a lot, but he has a good relationship with Peter. He likes living in the US, but he
thinks that Americans prefer to stay home because they dont have very good restaurants. French people
really enjoy going out for dinner. Food and wine are very important in their culture. In addition, women love to
go shopping because fashion is famous in France.
American and French people definitely have different hobbies. They have fun and relax in different ways. They
are two different cultures.
(Adapted from Touchstone 1, Workbook)
